$600 water bill?? UPDATE on page 3

you dont have a manual turn off valve on your sprinklers?

bummer

I have no idea. They are set on a timer, we push a button, they go... that's the extent of my sprinkler knowledge. And, we never imagined they were there was a problem until yesterday.

So guess what can cause over 600 bucks worth of damage to your water bill???

A screw stuck in your sprinkler valve!!! A stupid 2.5 inch silver screw from who knows where was stuck in a valve. It couldn't close and was leaking constantly.

Stupid screw!!

That's an expensive screw. I'm sorry that your vehicle is also in the shop. Hopefully, the water company will grant you some relief from the high bill.

I'll just keep the blender going. Help yourself!:)

Figures it was a screw - very appropriate. Sorry!

Thanks. Ah, about the car. I just got the call from the shop. I need another drumroll.......

$1500

That's it. I give.

 When it rains, it pours. Or when it sprinkles, you're screwed. :goodvibes

Hang in there!

Sell the screw on eBay. Maybe someone from those online gambling sites will see it and pay $35k for a $600 screw for the publicity.

We have had a lot of issues with our sprinkler system leaking - our first tip off was a sky high water bill one month, too. Anyways, since then DH makes sure to walk the yard on a regular basis to look for leaks. If we have a leak, we know by the mushy ground around it (or the muddy paws from the dogs, if it's in the backyard) so he can fix it.

He just fixed another one about a week ago, matter of fact.

It really only takes him about 3 minutes to just walk the yard and it has saved us SO much money since that first leak.

*hugs* on the two bills.

You bet your bippy my DH will be walking around looking for leaks from now on. He has been conveniently out of town for this whole saga! He's back now and gets to take over "water management".

Last year I had a problem which was a stuck valve on the water softener. Luckily it was caught when I had used 11,000 gallons compared to my normal 2,000 - 3,000 per month. I went to the water company showing I had immediately had the repair done when notified.

They did not reduce the water portion of the bill as I had used the water. However, they did reduce the sewage portion as the water from the softener flushing goes to a dry well and not into the sewage system.

THis thread kind of makes me glad we have our own well and septic. Although I can tell you exactly how much our new pump costs;) Averaged over the 20 years we've been in our house - about $200 per year.

To the OP - do you pay for sewer costs too? My parents get a water bill and a sewer bill, the sewer bill is based on the water usage. So - if you water bill is high, your sewer bill will be high too. Just warning you in advance that this might be coming too.

We have a well and sewers so we get a sewer use bill of about $225 per year. We have been in our home for 23 years. Last year our well pump, the original one, was hit by lightening so insurance covered it. So cost of water so far? Just the electricity to run the pump.
