Yesterday, DS and friends decided to go down to the local turf field to toss a ball around (they are all Freshman football players.)

However, they decided to stop off for lunch first at the small retail shopette next to the community park.

A few of the boys were debating whether to get foot longs or 6" subs. Since they were eager to go practice, they decided to just get the 6" subs. They sat down in one of the booths and as teen boys will do, devoured their sandwiches.

Just a few minutes after they left, a woman blacked out while parking and this is what happened:

If they had ordered the foot longs, they would still have been in the shop eating, sitting in a booth that is no longer there.

That shop is always full of kids as it is next to a huge community park. For some reason, at that moment, the shop was empty except for one guy on the other side of the wall ordering. He sustained minor injuries from flying glass.

The woman is a pillar in the community - a truly wonderful person, so we are all hoping that she is ok. No injuries sustained in the accident, but the blacking out is worrisome. But it is so scary to think how close DS came to being part of that accident. Hug your kids today!

Now that was definitely a close call! (Great thread title too!)

We are all laughing about it now, teasing that it is a new way to do takeout.

DS and friends were actually in the booth that is crumpled on the right. There used to be a whole line of booths on the right wall.

It is just a miracle that this happened in the 5 minutes when there was nobody in the store.

Some people though just crack me up. DS and friends said that another family drove up, just about the time this pic was taken and asked the Cops if they could still go in and order a sandwich. Really?

This is sort of what I was trying to say in a thread a little while ago.

What made them order the small subs? It's sort of surprising to think that growing boys would go with the smaller ones, isn't it? ;) I wouldn't discount that either intution, guardian angels, something else or a comination of all were at play here.

At any rate, I'm so glad they weren't there!

P.S. without getting religious or anything there's a great book called When God Winks which is about things like this (known as godwinks) and how they're not just coincidence, but part of a larger plan. Even if you don't believe, it's an interesting read and really makes you think about why things happen the way they do.

I believe that things often happen for a reason. I'm glad that everyone is OK. :)

Wow. That's so scary. Were the boys still in the area to see it happen? Did they take the picture?

A miracle indeed. Glad everyone is ok and that you can even laugh some about it now. I'm sure the hugs right now are special~

Pea-n-Me, I will be looking for that book! Sounds awesome~

They didn't take this particular picture, but DS has an almost identical one on his phone, even with the sheriff in the same position. The boys were next door on the turf field. They had just walked out the front door and over to the field as the field abuts the shops.

We are in a small community, pretty Mayberryish actually, so the local news had the pictures and videos up on Facebook before the cops had time to run they yellow tape. The husband, who came down immediately, was pretty stressed out and was yelling at the kids (a ton of them since they all cam over from the park) for taking pictures. I can understand his immediate stress and concern (although his yelling at 8 year olds was out of line), so am not using DS's pictures. Thus, this is the news report picture.

Funny though, if I were him, I would be more worried about the news video showing him so concerned that he had to go get the clubs out of the back of the car and walking them to his car rather than pictures teens and pre-teens were taking of the accident. :)

I first thought you meant your son was 8! But I guess you're talking about other kids.

Good gried about the golf clubs. :sad2:

I hope the boys aren't too upset about it. I can see where that would be a little jarring!

ETA: I meant "good grief," but I guess "greed" would work, too. :)

oh sheesh!!! some people!
OP I am so happy to hear your ds and his friends are fine!

I am going to look for that book pea, thanks.
I am not very religious, but I think things happen for a reason too.
I posted about this awhile back.

Some people would say that it is a coincidence. What I want to say would probably get the thread closed. But I will tell you that it was no coincidence. I am glad that your son and his friends are OK!!

So glad everyone is ok!

How is the woman who blacked out? Do they think it was a seizure or something? Wondering how old she is?

And some people still don't believe in fate.

That is a little too close for comfort!

Glad your DS and his friends listened to their inner voice and wanted to get to practice. One or all of them have attentive guardian Angels.

No, my kid and his friends are high school freshmen.

Not sure I would have the guts to post this on this particular board if I had allowed my 8 year old to go to a sub shop alone :lmao: (although for the record, at 8, he was walking down to this park with his friends)

The crash and the ensuing sirens (police station is 2 blocks away) was a Pied Piper call to the kids at the park next door. They descended on the store rather quickly.
