6 more days and too much luggage

We are leaving on the 16th , I am almost totally packed, just need the toiletries and curling iron. With 4 people we are ending up 4 carry on bags. 3 with clothes, one with camera, ziplock bags, sun screen, sandles, 2 way radios, kids homework etc.... We have 2 suitcases we will check, one with propel water, the other with gatoraid. We put them on the scale at home and all are under the weight limit! I figure coming home, the empty bags will hold any dirty clothes, and stuff that we end up buying there!! 20 days 13 hours and here we come!! :cheer2:

well now i am bringing choc milk for the kids breakfast with doughnuts so I have one more coller.

Seems like a lot to me. YIKES!!

I've never had to deal with this I have family there. And before my dad moved we'd rent cars he could pay more there since we didn't have to pay for hotel/resort nights. '

Oh well do what you gotta but they do have Pepsi and Sams club there. I would think using those grocery delivery places would be easier and really not much more. I bet a cab can run you to the store for pretty cheap too.

I leave in 8 days and we are moving so dh is bringing everything in a trailer we can fit. I'm bringing probably 4-5 bags. I know SW allows 3 per ticketed passanger and me and dd(2) will be flying. I could not imagine packing all that soda. I had a bag packed with nothing but clothes back in 98 and it was too heavy I had a nice gate check gal and she didn't charge me just put oversized tag on it but I was lucky most will charge.

Instead of packing each persons clothes in his or her own bag, you might consider mixing the clothes in the bags. That way if a bag gets lost no one person is naked. lol. Also, I always pack a few clothing items in a carryon so that if my bag gets lost i have something else to wear....like a fresh top and a change of underwear.
I would think that one checked bag per person should be plenty, plus maybe a couple of carryons for the entire family...not one carryon per person. But that is just me......I am an overpacker at heart, so I really have to sit down and figure out what is important. I find that a list sometimes helps, too.
anyway, have fun on your trip.......I wish I was going! :)

To me it really seems like overkill to pack food and check it on the plane. How do you know it will stay fresh and not get lost? I wouldn't trust having perishable food checked in the plane. Also with flying Northwest, I wouldn't be to certain about anything right now.

You should just make the food order from wegoshop. They can deliver all your food for you.

It really seems like a hassle to me. Think about it - Your on vacation. You shouldn't pack your food with you unless your going camping.

Finally, remember all checked luggage go through those super heavy duty x-ray machines (the ones that WILL destroy film, etc). I wouldn't want to put my food through it.

We decided to take granola bars, pop tarts and cereal bars for snacks and some of our breakfasts. So along with the water and gatoraid, we should be good to go!! Does the carry on bags go through the super heavy duty xray machines also? I agree with you about not wanting my food to go through those!

No the carryons just go through the regular ones.

One more thing straight from the TSA website http://www.tsa.gov/public/interapp/editorial/editorial_1052.xml
"Avoid packing food and drink items in checked baggage. "

I simply cannot imagine taking all that stuff to WDW.

We are a family of 7 and I am the biggest procrastinator(sp?) when it comes to packing. I usually end up taking too much because I end up packing tons of clothing.

I would never dream of packing water or sodas, let alone donuts and choc. milk. I would think a stop at the grocery store or even taking a taxi to the store would bring more piece of mind. The baggage storage areas on planes are extremely COLD. I would not trust anything that was stored there, let alone the "pressure" issue. Can you imagine what would happen if the sodas exploded. I would think the water would not be fresh either.

I know everyone is different, but to take all this would really put a strain on our vacation(not to mention DH would never allow it). I would worry about all the stuff more that I would worry about the costs.

Pepsi is pretty much available anywhere. Even the gas station across from Downtown Disney sells 12pks pretty reasonable.

Good luck and keep us posted as to how it all worked out.

I cannot see how bottled water could lose it's freshness by being checked. The temperature being cold won't hurt it either. I do see your point about soda or milk, I would definately be scared to transport anything perishable. As for the soda, I'd be scared the pressure would cause it to explode. We are only taking propel water, and gatoraide. All non fizzy. we will buy the refillable drink mugs for soda!

Any idea why they would tell you to avoid packing food and drink items in checked baggage? The article did not say? I can understand the drinks leaking, but I can't see the problem with non-perishables. Go Figure :confused3

Two words... lost luggage. I know non-perishables shouldn't be a problem, but you'd be surprised at how many people don't have enough sense to know what non-perishables are. Or those who assume "you can bring *some* kinds of food" means "you can bring any food you want." Because you know, rules don't apply to me. ;) Easier to discourage or forbid checking any kind of food altogether.

I looked into wegoshop. for delivery to a WDW resort it's $15 for a total of up to $100. they will shop anywhere you tell them to, including Sam's or Walmart or a local grocery store. this ensures you of getting the specific brands you want.

the $15 fee is worth every penny compared to hauling around extra bags. you will be busy enough dealing with the kiddos. I've flown with 2 yo's before and that's enough of a hassle. this is your vacation too!!!

we aren't going until next spring, and will be on the dining plan so most food is covered. since we are using ME and not getting a car, I'm still going to place an order for

bottled water for in the room
12 pk of beer
loaf of bread
jar of peanut butter (DD#1 lives on PB sandwiches)
2 or 3 1/2 gals of milk
juice boxes
box of cereal

the alternative is renting a car on site, or getting a taxi and doing my own shopping. I'm losing a few hours as well as the cost of a taxi or car rental.

I would NEVER want to check that many bags!!!! WHat van company are you using? Most companies offer a complimentary grocery store stop on the way to your hotel. Also, water and Pepsi weigh A LOT!! Have you weighed the coolers/suitcases you'll be taking?

Utilize a grocery stop or a grocery delivery service--MUCH EASIER!

I'm trying to get a family of four for 10 days packed in one large suitcase and 1 carry on...can we do it??? :) Although, we do have a double stroller, two car seats, and one extra duffle packed in the suitcase for stuff we buy down there.

My dh said I should write a book on vacation packing. Could you shop down there to at least avoid a couple of bags????

Good luck!! :)

Hmmm...we are a family of 7 now, but when we were a family of 6 we made it with 4 checked suitcases which included one for nonperishable foods plus a carryon backpack for each of us.

In your situation I would be concerned about the potential for leakage, the food's weight may consider your luggage to be oversized which costs $$$ and potentially trouble at the airport (ie having to redistribute to comply or paying for it which could be $$$), going thru security/inspections may be chaotic such as if things spill and that could mean you are late for your flight, and having all that to get thru the airport with 4 kids may be chaotic.

Then again if you're willing to go thru all the trouble - why not. Just pack things securely and encapsulated. It's your vacation, not our's - Enjoy yourselves! :goodvibes
