5yo getting permanent teeth?

So a couple of weeks ago, I started noticing that my DD5 had developed some pretty big gaps between her lower teeth. Specifically, the two middle teeth seemed to be squishing together leaving space on either side. I wondered what in the world was going on and made a mental note to call a dentist.

I could give any number of excuses as to why I never followed through with that, but the main reason is that I totally forgot. Yes, clearly I am parent of the year.

Anyway, FF to tonight when I was dressing her for bed and noticed that TWO permanent teeth are growing in the gaps, slightly behind her baby teeth. I kind of panicked, thinking it is much too early for this to be happening, but Google put my mind at ease a bit.

So my question for you DISers, is have you ever seen this? Did the dentist pull the baby teeth or did they loosen on their own?

ETA: She *just* turned 5 on Feb. 19th.

Both of mine got permanent teeth real early. DD12 has had many of her baby teeth pulled. One dentist even wanted to pull a couple permanent ones, but we put a stop to that.

Oh, and DD7 has an extra permanent tooth coming in sideways behind her top front. The dentist is very excited as she's never seen anything like it.

My sister has too many permanent teeth, and let me tell you, it was nothing to get excited about. Well, I guess the orthodontist got excited. Ca-ching!

My daughter had 2 rows of teeth on the bottom for a while when her baby teeth did not fall out but new ones came in behind. One eventually fell out on its own, the other the dentist took out. It was very quick. He rubbed some numbing gel on it and just reached in and handed it to her.
My DS just turned 6 and lost his first tooth 1 week after turning 5. He just lost his 5th tooth 2 days ago.

My son who is now 27 had to have all his baby teeth pulled because they never fell out and the permanent teeth were coming in behind them. We called him "sharky"
He is very small framed and started with spacers and braces when he was 7, and had to have all his canine teeth and two of his upper bicuspids removed so he had room for his teeth. Of course he also has huge chicklet teeth to boot.
When he joined the Marines they pulled out all his wisdom teeth even though none had erupted. They dug them out of the bone and he wound up with dry sockets on all of them so he was in pain for weeks.
My other son who is large framed has tiny teeth, almost the size of baby teeth. His first bicuspids never formed so he has some space there and had to get crowns on some of his teeth just to fill the spaces. He joined the army and they pulled his wisdom teeth even though he had plenty of room and they had erupted. So now he has tiny baby tooth sized first and 2nd molars.

I had a few extra permanent teeth myself. So we had remove the first ones that came down and make room for those. Fun times I tell ya

I lost my first one before I turned 6, actually two in 24 hours. My upper eye teeth came in over top of my baby teeth, but I lost them and they came down on their own. I did have braces for crooked front teeth.

My brother on the other hand didn't lose his first until 9 and none of his came in before he lost them. I believe he lost 8 on his own and the rest pulled. He didn't have the enzyme that breaks down the roots of the baby teeth and when he had the remainder pulled, they said his roots were wrapped around the bone of the remaining teeth, he never would've lost them on his own. He got a blessing of never getting cavities also, not me I experienced that pain while he had the pain of having them pulled

My 5 year old is getting ready to lose her 3rd tooth. Her bottom two teeth fell out on their own, but the permanent teeth had grown in behind them. I was worried as well, but the teeth moved to their real places.

My dd starting losing her teeth at an early age. Her half brother had such bad teeth that being 4 years older he had an othodontist. My dd's dentist had done xrays and showed that her canines were coming in and the baby teeth were not anywhere near coming out. So to help to prevent some of the issues her brother had, we had his orthodontist look at her. He suggested we pull those 2 teeth. I didn't want to, but we did anyway. Honestly from the look of dd's mouth I was afraid we were in for what my stepson was going through (major expensive ortho work).

Suddenly a few years later, she wore a retainer on her bottom teeth for 6 months and then went to permanent. That's it. All she ever needed. Honestly if I showed you pictures of her mouth at 6 or 8 and now at 16 you would be amazed. Most people ask her how she had so much ortho work done at such a young age (several years ago) She has beautiful teeth with minor work. I'm all for doing as much as you can as quickly as you can. Now I know it may not always turn out so well, but I would do it again.

"Shark's teeth", as they're called, are very common. My daughter had them coming in behind her bottom front baby teeth well before they became loose and fell out.

Don't panic if everything seems out of whack and you see a future of major orthodontic bills, though.... they slid right into place a few months later, when her baby teeth finally came out.

My dentist just suggested to my DD6 that she needed to go to the orthodontist for the big gap between her front teeth, but I told him, "no thank you". My sister and I had the same thing and our teeth grew in perfectly, without any "meddling". If she needs braces later on, fine, but right now, I'm just going to let nature do its stuff.

Ds10 (a late teether) had a bad case of shark teeth a few months ago. Finally, the orthodontist agreed that the baby tooth should be pulled (the adult tooth was coming up in a very odd place!). He really doesn't like to pull teeth, but sometimes the root of the baby tooth can damage the permanent tooth.

There is no question that he needs orthodontia - small mouth, giant teeth. Thank goodness for palate expanders!

My DD6 had that happen last summer. The two front bottom teeth were slightly loose but not enough for me to pull. The permanent teeth were through the gum behind those. I called the dentist and he said to bring her in to pull them. The came in nicely and quickly moved to the right spot a few weeks after he pulled them. I think it is pretty common.

My DD7 lost her first teeth at age 5 and had 'shark teeth' behind her bottom two front teeth. It took a while, but the permanent teeth gradually moved forward and loosened the baby teeth. Just make sure to brush 'both sets' of teeth.

Its not that unusual, but I think that you probably should call the dentist to see if he wants to pull the baby teeth. With my daughter we had only one tooth that did that (she was older) and the dentist decided not to pull it. Unfortunately the permanent tooth came in behind and never did advance forward as the dentist predicted. If it had been pulled her smile would have been perfect without orthodontic work. I don't think pulling a tooth is really very traumatic when they are baby teeth with another behind. Certainly not like pulling wisdom teeth, etc. I don't know why our dentist didn't do it.

My 5 year old has lost 3 teeth. I wouldn't be too worried.

Both of my boys have "extra" teeth. We already had to have 1 pulled for ODS. And his 2nd permanent tooth in that pot came in sideways (so the back of the tooth is actually facing his other front tooth). YDS's is growing UPSIDE DOWN into his septum.

So....yeah....all the oral surgeons in MN are lining up to take on my kids

I wanted to update a bit. I contacted our former hygenist (wife of our dentist) in GA, and she said not to panic but definitely make an appointment. Unfortunately there are only three pediatric dentists in town, and none accept our insurance. I did find an office who'll see her, but considering her anxiety, I am concerned about their ability to comfort her. Her dentist in GA was amazing, so I don't want this to be a bad experience for her. Anyway, the appointment is a bit less than two weeks away, so I will have plenty of time to coach her.

I had 2 sets of teeth as a child. The only thing the dentist told my parents was to take my picture immediately if they wanted one of me missing my teeth lol. I was never toothless. I also have great permanent teeth and never needed orthodontia.

Today we saw the dentist, and he recommended they extract the two baby teeth since they show no signs of loosening. He wants a pediodontist to do this under sedation, so we now have a consult with one on April 24th. I'd love it if these two teeth would loosen by then.

My BIL never had perm teeth. Had his babies pulled at about 10, and dentures since then. No ideas why.. just never happened. Did ex-rays about 3 times .. waiting to see... but evidently ends with a not really funny ha ha story a SIL posts to DIS.. and no teeth..
