Pembo, I am sorry you have to go through this and I am glad that you got to the doctors and they discovered the problem.

My 18 yr. old neighbor had a similar brain tumor, at the base of his brain. He had it removed 2 weeks before his prom last year. He attended his prom and is doing fine now.

But, I understand how scary this must be for you.
My cousins' DH had this about ten yrs. ago.
Only after effect was loss of hearing on one side which I think I had read you were told might be a possibility?

Hello Pembo,

My prayers for your upcoming surgery...

Just wanted to let you know that 6-8 hours for this surgery is not unusual. The total time in surgery will be longer due to anesthesia, positioning for the operation, and waking up at the end. As your surgeon told you, the acoustic neuroma is at the base of the brain. A lot of major blood vessels and nervous system structures are in that vicinity too, so the surgery is very delicate and slow. You will go to the ICU for several days postop, for close monitoring of your neurological and respiratory status because of the area of the operation. This is all normal for this type of surgery. All brain surgery patients are monitored in this way.
