With the new digital machines the images can be read from anywhere INSTANTLY.

This probably improves patient care. No waiting on a Radiologist to drag his/her sleepy body out of bed. You have someone who is awake on reading it.

Wow! Funny you should mention this. I took my mother to a hospital last night (East Coast) for an MRI, and we were told the same thing!

And here I was worried about software jobs being lost to programmers in India. I hadn't heard about CT and MRI images being analyzed by techs on the other side of the globe. I guess that it makes sense.

This is very common. My husband is a radiology resident, and he is always saying that there is a huge shortage of radiologists in the United States (more scans being ordered every day), so a lot of the radiology groups contract with oversea's doctors to help out. Also, the previous comments are correct, most radiology is done during the day. Yes, some radiologists are on call at night (my husband :), but hospitals or groups usually have to pay a radiologist more for that kind of shift, so they decide to send the work overseas for a more reasonable price. Either way, it helps to keep health care costs down, and the quality of care must meet a certain standard, so patients don't need to worry.

Our hospital also uses a group in Australia called Night Hawk. The ER has been using this group for at least three years now. I couldn't believe it either when I first found out about it.

Yeah Jason, which don't you trust???????????????????????

But getting back to the problem here, I guess it makes sense in a way, tho I must say it's surprising.

We are awake while you guys are asleep too, so I guess with that it kinda makes sense & results are possibly received quicker.

Who knows:confused:

Night Hawk...the nurse said she usually works nights and that is who reads them! She wants the "Day Hawks" now that she is on days. She said that the local readers are so much slower.

Maybe Jason is worried about how they became certified or the schooling or if they are certified. Each country has their own system and standards and maybe he is worried about the standards.
