Pembo, my daughter went for two weeks, when she was 7. She had a wonderful experience, and this year will be her third summer.

This is a very small camp, with a low camper/counselor ratio and I think I'd take that into consideration, for a younger child. DD had 3 other campers in her group, and one counselor, so they each got a lot of individual attention.

If you are worried, but you have the option of starting out with 3 nights, and your child is willing, you could try that and see how it goes, and then maybe do the week long camp next year.

My oldest is 10yrs, and he has never been to camp. I guess I just worry that nobody will take as good of care of him as I will.:o I know, I'm totally overprotective, maybe someday soon camp will be on the agenda!

My DD started at church camp the summer after third grade (I think.) She did the mini 3 night camp. Then she went every summer since for 9 years and is applying to be a counselor this summer. Check out the camp but I don't think that is too young. You have to be comfortable with it though.

My godson started camp around 7 years old....he started out going for just a week but kept calling up and wanting to stay extra weeks! By the time he was 10 he was away for most of the summer at camp.

Two summers ago, DS (then 6) had the opportunity to go to a camp specifically for children with kidney disease. Camper/counselor ratio is very low and he would have been going with the doctors and nurses that already take care of him at the hospital (they were the "counselor" staff). He stewed about it and decided he didn't want to go. Of course I was a bit relieved because I thought 6 was just too young to be gone for a week, even with people I know and trust.

So, when it came around again last year, he was SO excited and wanted to go. But, as the time got closer, he waivered. I told him that he could go or he could stay--it was up to him. He was even waivering on the way to the drop off point!!! Once we got there, he decided to go and had a REALLY good time. He's looking forward to it again this summer.

So, he went at 7 and had a good time and is looking forward to going at 8.

Sorry--long post!!!!!;)

Matts camp was a cancer camp and also had Dr's and Nurses there, they also transported them into Sloan Kettering if they were due treatments on any date they were there.

bumping for the day crowd...

FYI-We have a lot of kids from our church go to camp every year. I'm planning on calling a mom who's 2nd grader went last year. Her dd's picture is on the cover of the camp brochure and on all the camp posters. :)

It depends on the child. My son was 5 the first time he went camping without me. He tagged along with the boy scouts. My uncle was the scoutmaster. When they came back from camp I had several of the leaders tell me that they could not believe how self sufficient he was for a 5 year old. My daughter started going to girl scout camp when she was 6. The first year she went for 3 nights. When she came home she asked if she could go the following summer for a week. She didn't know a sole when we dropped her off at camp. She is very outgoing so I knew she would be fine. I recommend trying the 3 night trip first. If he enjoys it let him go for a week next summer or later this summer.

Wow, I went to camp at age 7. A week-two away from the parents every summer up to age 13. Loved it, especially the older I got. I would say if a kid wants to go, they do well on sleepovers, you can afford it..........go for it. My DS loves spending a week at Grandma's for no reason at all. He even goes to Y camp when there. Totally different town than where we live and he loves it.
