50th wedding anniversary gift

We will be celebrating our 50th this year. Please do not buy any household items, practical or fancy. I have more than I will ever use and find myself giving them to local charities to sell. We love going out to dinner and to the movie theatre. Do not give us lottery tickets as we are not gamblers and consider them a waste of money. You know the people that you are to attend their 50th so you should know their likes or dislikes. We love to travel - do they? If so, suggest everyone go together and get them (depending on the sum) a weekend away or a gift certificate to a local travel agency.

We're only hitting #43 but feel the same way as you. We are trying to get rid of "stuff". Love the idea of a travel gift certificate!

At 50 yrs my parents would not have enjoyed movie theater tickets they had not been out to movie since the Love Bug was playing at the local drive in like 1972 or so.

NO they did not need or want anything that took up space in the house.

I've seen more 50th anniversary stuff at Goodwill that I can shake a stick at HHHHMMMMM Come to think of it that was where I got my parents fancy glasses they drank their water out of.....their cake knife an a few other 50th anniversary things.

SHOW UP give a nice 50th anniversary card an your loved ones will be tickled pink.

Thanks for all the suggestions - we don't have anyone to chip in with - their kids r throwing the brunch since they have no ideas on a gift - I think I will go with a visa gift card and they can choose how to spend

I just remembered what else I did for my parents. I had the US flag flown over the Capital on their anniversary. You can get it done through your representatives and it doesn't cost much. You have the option of what kind of flag and whether you want it mailed to them or not. I had my parents mailed to them (took about 5 weeks) and they had it framed. On their anniversary, I made a card that told them the event was taking place.

I wanted to add this option. It probably won't help the OP because of time constraints but may be of interest to others.

ANNIVERSARY GREETINGS. Anniversary greetings will be sent to couples who are celebrating a 50th, 60th, 70th or later wedding anniversary.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS. Birthday greetings will be sent only to people turning 80 or older or veterans turning 70 or older.

OTHER GREETINGS. A limited number of special occasions other than birthdays and anniversaries exist for which the Greetings Office will send appropriate recognition to United States citizens. These occasions include important life events such as:

Special 50th anniversary photo album. Take lots of pictures and mail them to the lucky couple. Be sure to take lots of casual pics of family members and kids just acting goofy.

We did this for my parents 50th and they loved it. We did a photobook of the party though rather than a traditional album.

We went to a 50th anniversary and took a gift certificate to a great, non-chain restaurant in the city where they live. They really seemed to love it!

My parents are very tech Savy and we have said for years that my mom should be the brand ambassador for apple. She spent a lot of time in drs offices and hosp waiting areas watching tv on her iPad and sooo many women would ask her about it. Plus she plays online games on it with all if her kids and grand kids, face books, shares pic and takes video with her iPad. It was easy for my dad to use when he couldn't use his hands well.

If you can get a few folks to chip in an iPad is great and take the time to show them how to use it with their cable provider or Netflix
