50th Anniversary--no studios for 9/30 & 10/1

Just for giggles I just checked my 2 homes OKW and BWV while there are no studios they both have 1 bedrooms available.

I am booked at kidani in a 1bedroom. Normally get a studio and would have as normal except for the ton of points I have from banking all of my 2019 points (December use year) so went up to a 1 bedroom. We are booked 9/26-10/7. we just want to be there for the actual 50th. We go to Disneyland’s anniversary every year so just feels right to go for the big wdw one.

I booked BWV 9/29 to 10/6. We want to be at MK on the actual 50th.

The 25th lasted 15 months and it was great! (Except for the pink cake castle)

Poly studios booked up right at 11 months along with other resorts studios. The rest followed slowly in the next 1-2 weeks including a lot of 1BR's and 2BR's. The shock to me was when SSR studios disappeared! I do think that has to be a record. We're also booked but after seeing how quickly DVC rooms went we'll continue to evaluate if it seems worthwhile to "experience" the crowds or not. There actually did appear to be a few "shenanigans" with some rooms out of service before 11 months but after a few members reported contacting DVC to complain it was a miracle and the rooms were available again.

Or people with a ton of banked points walking rooms for Thanksgiving and Christmas.....That's what I'm doing. So basically I have taken an OKW studio out of service, and booking it as a two bedroom lock-off. As I walked forward, the unit could then show as an available studio and one bedroom. Remember, there are no dedicated studios at OKW, all of them are part of a lock-off unit.

Members doing spec rentals are not violating their contracts and are using their points to their own desires. I really cannot fault them for either.

Those end of Sep, first day or two of October dates presented a unique DVC reservation pattern never seen before. Though the 50th is a long event going well into 2022, there were apparently a huge number that wanted to be there at the beginning (or possibly have rooms to rent to others). Many rooms actually filled very quickly after 8 a.m. at 11-months out, including both those that have never before had an 11-month issue, and those that are usually available at 7-months out. Examples: BLT booked full in less than 5 minutes after 8 a.m. and that was all of BLT including all lake view rooms and all 1BRs, same for VGF except it took a little longer, and the CCV cabins and Poly bungalows booked full despite that much of the year they are usually open even at 60 days out. Typically, NYE is the highest demand night of the year but it has never filled anywhere near as fast as Sep 30 and Oct 1, 2021, did at 11-months out.

Starting with Oct 3, 2021, the reservation pattern actually reverted back to something near its normally expected high demand for that fall time of year at 11-months out, with "usual suspects" like AKV value and club level studios, BLT and BWV standard view studios, CCV studios, and occasionally BWV boardwalk view, VGF, and Riviera tower and standard, studios, filling quickly at 8 a.m. at 11-months out, but most rooms remaining open for some time.

I started walking my OKW-HH reservation on Oct 15 to get what I wanted over the 50th.
You have to plan ahead for high attendance events.

I was able to book two studios at the 11 month mark for September 29-October 5 at BWV.

That can definitely happen but these were unique and outside of the pattern that is seen with walking.

I tried two days after the 30th was available, and I couldn't get a studio at OKW. It occurred to me a couple of days later, and I was able to get a 1 bdrm.

I banked points for the first time in my ownership, so I am booking the larger room for just the two of us.

I remember checking few weeks back and many of the studios that were unavailable via dvc points were available as cash bookings. Checking now there’s less but still see availability for studios for the 50th at ssr, akv, bwv, and okw when booking cash despite no availability for any of these rooms with points. My understanding is this means at least part of the inventory crunch came from Disney booking the rooms (or potentially pulling them as anticipated availability). Since it was so wide of an inventory crunch so quickly I wonder how large of scale Disney took rooms to rent for cash.

I also guess I dont fully understand how system works where rooms can go for cash when inventory crunch in dvc. I could see this being problem in upcoming years with point surplus from covid. Can any one elaborate how this system works?

If it is Riviera, there are still a LOT of unsold points there. Disney can use the unsold inventory for cash rooms, giveaway promotions, cast members, special guests...basically anything they want to use them for. Plus they still own points in the other resorts they can use for cash reservations. Additionally, if a member trades out their points to another Disney non-DVC venue (Cruise, cash resort, Adventures by Disney, and so forth) DVC turns those points over to cash reservations to offset the cost of the non-DVC venue. This pandemic and its cancellations has put a glut of points into the system. There is no way for us to know just how many rooms are available for cash, it may not be that many per resort. Just like with DVC, it shows availability, but we have no idea how many of those room are available...1, 5, 10, 100? All we really know for sure is that ONE room of that type is currently available.

Disney has 11 month booking on their own points as well, and can use it to claim inventory for cash bookings.

You pretty much find cash availability for every day of the year so it isn't unusually that there are dates for the 50th. What we don't know is if they took or take the opportunity to book more heavily in popular times or if they do actually spread it evenly out (as they really should). It will be different in a resort that is not sold out like Riviera right now as they currently still own a good part of that and can do as they wish.
