I agree that 50mm is a little tight. For me, it seems to short to be a long lens, and too long to be a short lens. So if you were looking to buy a prime, I'd encourage you to consider a 30mm instead. BUT..... given that you have the opportunity to borrow one....... you can't beat it!
I think that having a prime will give you the opportunity to think creatively and you might grow to like that length like so many others here.
I have the T2i, and I want to encourage you to not be afraid of going as high as 3200 ISO. I shot the MSEP and Chrismtas parade and 3200 and was very happy with the results. I used Lightroom 3 to deal with the noise and was quite happy. Heck, I even went as high as 6400 when I was too lazy to swap off my 2.8 lens in favor of the 1.4. Just shoot in RAW and you'll have a lot of latitude to address issues in post processing.
