50 Years Old, Time For AARP...

My husband turned 50 a couple of weeks ago and got mail for joining AARP. It is $16 for a one year membership, and cheaper if you sign up for more years. My question is...... Is it worth joining at 50 years old and what are the perks that make it worth it?

Well...my mother joined when she turned 50, which wasn't long ago, so she really hasn't taken advantage of too many offers. However, she did look into the auto insurance and literally pays half of what she used to. About $600 a year. I can't remember exactly what company it's through, but it's not some unknown company.

Last year when I turned 50, my folks gave me a membership to tease me. I will renew it every year.
Go to the web-site and it will list all the things you can save $$$$ on. I couldn't begin to list them all for you.

Here's an example from my own experience.....
We went to Disneyland this past summer. My AARP discount saved us $210 on our hotel room alone. I also bought some t-shirts from DisneyShopping and used my AARP discount.

We are going back to DL in a couple of months. My AARP card saved me another $30 per night on our room. That's $90 to spend on something else.

We bought our auto (2 cars), homeowner's (NH home), and and umbrella policy through AARP with The Hartford. We are saving more than $500 over what we paid through a local agent.

We would buy insurance for our FL condo but The Hartford does not write policies in Florida. Thye claim that they are considering it but nothing yet.

Okay, funny and embarassing story. I signed DH up for AARP when he turned 50 this year. He was mortified. One night we were alone, DD was at a sleep over. We decide to go out to dinner. On the way home DH spots an adult store. (okay, where is that embarassing smilie when you need it). Anyway, he wants to go in. This is not some place I have ever been to so for giggles we go in. Lo and behold, if you present your AARP card you get a 20% discount. I couldn't stop laughing the entire time he was looking around.

So carry your card with you. You never know where you can use it.
Oh and by the way, the spouse gets a card as well. I'm 44 and have my card in my wallet.

I got some mail from them once and I was NOWHERE near being 50. I was in my late 20s/early 30s at the time.

I am 44 and carry one due to my DH joining!!!!

Not that we travel extensively, but it way more than pays for itself when we use it on vacation. Many hotels give you a discount if you are an AARP member.

You can easily make up the $16 annual fee in one hotel stay-they have great discounts for hotels, rental cars, restaurants, etc. I would get one.

I use the card several times a year at hotels-save 10-20%!

You'd be surprised who is on the cover of the monthly mag-even Bruce Springsteen!

I turned 50 four years ago and never did get anything from AARP. My wife got her application the week after turning 50. She joined for a while, then dropped it.

DH and I became AARP members when we turned 50 two years ago. We enjoy reading the monthly magazine, and have used the card several times for hotel discounts.

Hey, you're going to turn 50 whether you like it or not. So you might as well take advantage of the perks that go with it.

It just lists my name, member number, date valid thru, and valued member since date.

And yes, I am sure people wonder why I have an AARP card. According to one of my patients the other day, I look 30!!!!! I wanted to kiss her feet!!! I do look young for my age, always have.

We held off joining for several years because we really didn't agree with their political slant, but for whatever reason DH decided to join.

I have to say we love the auto club. Its the same towing service that AAA uses and costs much less. We now pay less for 3 plus members than we were paying for 2 regular AAA memberships and feel the service is at least as good as AAA.

We also found that we save the same as we did with AAA when staying at hotels.

powellrj, do you know whether AARP has a 100 mile towing option like AAA's gold program? We're paying extra for the AAA gold but if AARP has it for less we may go for it now that we're eligible and getting their membership offers.

I had a AARP sent for the 50, I also got a call from an Army recruiter,, I am female, and 50 right.....
So this recruiter is going on and on how the Army needs people like me. Dumb founded I say "how did you get my phone no?" He tells me they are calling seniors in the area...

Even more dumb founded I ask him, what kind of shape is the Army in that they need seniors, and although I am 50 I would not think of myself as a senior citizen.

That is about the time the pro recruiter lost it and said, no we are calling College seniors that graduated, at 50 I had just completed my BA!

Oh, last year, I called AARP asking them about the Medicare plans, and enrolled at $23 for three years. Great deal.
