5 Years Ago Today....

My life would change forever. 5 years ago today, Hurricane Isabel made a special stop at my house with me in it and someone above was looking out for me.

Since then, I don't take life or things, people for granted. All the material things I liked so much were destroyed and now the most precious things I have are making memories with my family and friends.

I learned not to sweat the small stuff. I learned that time is something we can never have enough of.

Isabel was an eye opener for us as well. It's not often that Richmond sees a storm still at Hurricane strength since we are so far inland. We were lucky and suffered no damage outside of losing power for a week and flooding in the basement. A man 2 streets over from us was killed when he went outside to check on his house and a tree fell on him. 500 yards the other way and an entire street was closed down due to the large volume of houses with trees fallen on them. Not something I ever hope to see here again.

Sorry you lost your things- but you gained a new awareness!
21 years ago today my life changed too! My godson was born. 14 years later after battling cancer from the age of 2 he passed away. I went from a immature 24 year old to feeling like I was 70 in those 14 years but I also gained a new awareness from it- I don't sweat the small stuff with my 8 year old, I don't put off taking trips with her because you never know what the future will hold. I expose her to all sorts of charity work so she realizes that there are kids out there that are not as fortunate as she is- prior to my godson it had not even dawned on me how many children with cancer and other terrible illnesses there were. And you are right-time is something we can never have enough of. I sit here thinking about what type of man my godson would be now and I can not even picture it- he was a little boy when he passed and I can only imagine what he would be doing now. I know he would have still be a volunteer firefighter as he was a junior fireman when he died and that was the love of his life but that is about all I can know for sure.

I remember Isabel too...so many people near me lost their homes. I was blessed to only lose power and tree limbs. Most businesses in down now have a plaque showing the high water mark.
