5 Guys Burgers and Peanut Oil

Interestingly enough, the place was packed for a Thursday night. I don't know if it still has the newness to it or if they were doing a kid's night deal (they did have the mascot there), but I was surprised how busy they were for a weeknight.
That's a good sign in this economy.

I guess I'm the dissenter that thinks 5 guys is just ok.

Fries are good but nothing all that special. I've had better. Though, peanut oil cooked fries are my favorite. I do love that you can get vinegar for them there, though! And they're readily and easily availably found... which I guess can be a big appeal for them, unlike my other 2 favorite fries...

The burgers are OK. Not great. OK. They make a good snack inside a movie theatre half-eaten when you're hungry, though... haha. Better than many other fast food burgers, especially other east coast chains' fast food burgers.

So to the OP, IMHO your peanut-allergic daughter (who yeah no way near there, the one I go to has LOTS of signs basically on the entire storefront warning you that there's open peanut shells) isn't missing all that much.

Plenty of places to eat in the Chicagoland area, skipping one shouldn't be a problem

I think this was just a place that the OP had heard a lot of good things about and was anxious to try.. I doubt she's worried about skipping it - just disappointed that she and her DD can't go there.. :confused3

It's also good that this info is coming out for others - who might not have been aware of the peanut situation until they had traveled some distance to try the new place everyone was "raving" about..

No she will not
in addition to fried in peanut oil
the have crack and shell peanuts with shells all over the floor

The peanuts have been removed from my local Five Guys because of many consumer allergy complaints. They have been gone for over 2 months now.

Ok - if we're now talking fries and Chicago, go to Al's on Taylor Street for the best fries in the world. :lovestruc :lovestruc Forget the burger, Al's Italian Beefs are mouthwatering to boot. Topped off by Mario's Italian Ice across the street.

I'm homesick. :rotfl2: :lovestruc

Popping back into this thread to make the comment that I'm still craving a Five Guys burger. I'm going to have to go there tomorrow. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Glad you clarified that you wanted a Five Guys Burger for dinner, cause your earlier post said that you wanted five guys for dinner. :confused3But whatever floats your boat :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Who am I to judge? :lmao:

Hat tip to C.Ann :worship: :thumbsup2

[in case you all are wondering, I have NO CLUE how to double or triple post within one thread]

I live about 3 blocks from Johnnies. We never get to go there in the summer because of the long lines for Italian Ice.

Now with the cooler weather, we can pop in when ever the heck we feel like it. Just had it tonight as a matter of fact:goodvibes

DH and I have a pact that in the summer time, when we drive past Johnnies, if there is not a line, we MUST get a beef sandwich, no matter what the hour is.

I'm now drooling... :rotfl2:

I emailed corporate yesterday to try to find out when the one near me is supposed to open. It has to be soon. Haven't heard from them yet, but I have a feeling that I'll be there as soon as the doors are open.

There is much hoopla going on of a 5 Guys Burger place opening near to our home. They are new to the area and am anxious to try one.

BUT when reading their menu, I see that they fry their french fries in Peanut Oil. I guess that means that my severe nut allergy'd daughter is not able to go there. I think I know the answer, but would like to hear from others.

The more I think of it.....DD will NOT be going there.

Since we're allergic to soy oil, which every other place on Earth uses, we're pretty excited about this place.

So you have one restaurant you can't go to and we have one restaurant we CAN go to. Cry me a river.

Your severe peanut allergy child isn't going to be able to go there anyway, they have large containers of peanuts in the shells around and customers can help themselves while they are waiting for their food. There are peanut shells and dust around.

I am usually a big advocate for children with allergies, but in this case I don't have a problem with it. Five Guys is a restaurant where peanuts play a major role. Just like I don't take my son's shellfish allergic best friend to the local crab shacks and expect them to accomodate him in some way, or a celiac child to the local bakery.

Five Guys takes steps to keep children safe -- they have very clear signage in their restaurants on the door warning people that peanuts are present inside the restaurant and also letting people know not to bring the peanuts outside due to allergy threats.
