So, we are booked AKL for next week and, some potential bad news today. DH injured his foot over this past weekend and per doc today, has a small fracture in the side of it!! He is to see an ortho doc this week...but, ugh, the waiting, not knowing, and what to do?! Doc says he should be fine for Disney :confused3. I cannot imagine, especially if he ends up in a boot or something. Yes, this is our 4th visit to the world, so, we know about the walking! Trying to stay positive, until the ortho tells us otherwise. Just don't think he will feel up to living the Disney experience starting Sunday when we check in! The kids, DD 8, and DS 6, will be devastated, heck, I will be devastated. Do we cancel? Try to book later? The planning that goes into all of this and the countdown, you can imagine the sadness as we try to decide what to do. Send positive thoughts please!!! :sad1:

I'd go for it! Six weeks before our first trip with the inlaws my fil almost chopped off his toes with the hood of his bucket loader. We just pushed his tush around in a wheelchair and took it at a slower pace. I know it's a questionable debate around here, but we somehow bypassed long lines on some rides bc of the wheelchair, and got some great seats for shows too.
However, the next year we went he was crabbin about having to walk :lmao:

I agree . . . if you can swing a wheelchair for at least parts of the day, it may turn out to be a blessing!

I would go and rent an ECV for the entire trip so that you're sure DH is mobile everywhere you go and DH doesn't have to rely on you to push him around while you're also trying to care for 2 young kids. Look at the DISabilities board here for suggestions on where to rent from. The added cost will be worth having your DH be comfortable and able to join you & the kids for everything you plan to do.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! He is at the ortho doc now...I am waiting....patiently. You know, we sorta joked about me having to push him around, and now...you all make it seem do-able! That is why I love these boards. The thought of disappointing everyone and well, losing a chunk of money (we are driving, and DH also reserved a hotel in GA, nonrefundable:sad2:), it seems overwhelming. Maybe Disney would be just the cure he needs after all.

How did the Ortho appt go? Have you made a decision on what to do about your trip? I hope your trip is still on.

Positive thoughts to you! Don't cancel. Rent a wheelchair if you have to. You can still have a very enjoyable experience. I once sprained my ankle just after walking into Magic Kingdom, first day of the vacation. The ankle swelled up so bad I couldn't walk at all. My husband pushed me in a wheel chair for the next several days and we were pleasantly surprised to see that all people in wheel chairs go right to the front of lines. Good luck to you and I hope it all works out for you!

Ok! We are going!!!!! We will start our long long journey in the early morning. So, the fracture is going to take some time to heal. Ortho doc said no boot! Compression sock, and some meds, he can wear tennis shoes (he has worn a soft cast on it all week) but, no walking 8 hrs at a time, ice it at night, and pool time is good therapy, foot has no pressure on it in the water! THAT one will make the kids happy! AKL pool is their fave! Mostly the pain will be an issue, and he must be careful not to twist it, but, we said this trip we were taking it slower anyway. But, you all are right, I can always get him a chair if he needs it. I feel better now, and thanks everyone who said go for it, when I didn't think we could! Now to get that packing done.....we are Disney bound!

have him use a wheelchair. he'll be more help to you if he's not miserable in pain. i'm an arnp working in an ortho practice and i am a frequent disney visitor and wouldn't want my patients to deal with walking in a boot all day... not great for the foot plus you walk off balance so the hips, knees, and back take a beating as well. my teenage daughter sustained a grade 2-3 sprain right before we went in december 08 and lasted about an hour before she realized a wheelchair (although cumbersome at times) made her a lot more comfortable. we just parked it in the wheelchair/stroller parking and she'd stand in lines. it really helped with keeping the pain and swelling in check.
