Would you take your 5 & 6 year old to Univ and IOA? We have never been and are wanting to consider a different Orlando vacation. Will most of the shows at Univ be too much for them?

Also, where would you stay? I thought I read that Portofino has an indoor playplace. Is this true? Is it worth staying onsite for FOTL access?

Thanks!

Freetime - I just took my just-turned 7 yo nephew last month and we had a BLAST !! He was willing to try some 'big' rides like Mummy, but didn't want to do them again !! What he did love was Spiderman, Seuss Landing (cat in hat and 1 fish 2 fish) he loved the flying unicorn rollercoaster (we did that many times !!), the Sinbad show, ET, MIB, Shrek - there were lots of characters about for pictures and he loved that too. I know that rates are high this year compared to previous years, but if you can afford it FOTL is great, even in the 'off' season. My grown kids/teen love HRH, but my nephew was very happy at RPR and we got a great APH rate - the water play area is perfect for that age group - we haven't stayed at PBH yet. Almost forgot - he also loved the animal show at USF ! I think 5 & 6 are great ages for Universal ! Oh yeah, we never even made it back to the kid's play area in USF, but I hear it's great, too !

We went in Sept. with our two girls, 6 and 8. They have been to WDW twice, but this was their first time at Universal. I just asked them which was their favorite and they both said Universal. Keep in mind, my older daughter loved IOA for the thrill rides, most of which your kids probably won't make the height requirements for. But my younger one loved it too, especially Spiderman, Jimmy Neutron and the Cat in the Hat. They will love Seuss landing, and the little play areas.
If by shows you mean live action, we only saw Voyage of Sinbad and the kids enjoyed that. It was nice to sit and relax for a while. We also caught half of Ghostbusters and that was fun.
Is it worth staying onsite? Absolutely! We went during slow season, but we still saved a significant amount of time with FOTL passes. If you are going during a busier time, it's invaluable. The other great thing about being onsite is the convenience. We stayed at the Hard Rock (kids loved the pool slide), and it took us about 7 minutes from the time we left our hotel room till we entered US. Add another 2 minutes to IOA. No cars, shuttles, parking lots to deal with (BTW, it is quite a walk from the parking area to the parks). Dinner, take your pick of any of a number of great restaurants at Citywalk. You can leave either park and be seated at a table in 10 minutes!
I know HRH is closest to US, RP is closest to IOA, PB requires either a shuttle, water taxi, or a good long walk. I don't know about the playplace, I'm sure someone else can answer. I definitely say go! Whichever hotel you choose I'm sure will be fine. Have fun! :jumping2:

We took our 3 and 5 years olds in March and stayed onsite at HRH. Had a blast. We could not believe how great it was. We were Disney snobs! There is so much even for little ones to do at Universal. We planned to stay onsite again this March and bought 5 day bonus passes (they expire after 5 days but are cheaper than regular 2 day tickets which don't expire, esp. if you can get a 5 for 4 deal like we did. Check mousesavers.com for discounts) but the on-site hotel rates are OUTRAGEOUS, over $100 per room what we paid for the exact same dates last year, so, we will be staying at the Wilderness Lodge and only using 2 days (day trips) at Universal.

We've been going to USO since DD was 3 1/2 and DS was 12. DD loves USO (she love WDW too, but ET and Seuss Landing beat out anything at WDW for her). She is now 7 and loves everything that she is tall enough to ride. Infact I have to keep measuring her for our trip this week. She wants to ride the Mummy so bad.

onsite we've stayed at HRH and RPR. HRH is beautiful, but unless they've had a change in managment I wouldn't suggest staying there. We had 2 horrible experiences with them, one in April 2001, the other in Jan 2002.

We stayed at RPR last July 4 weekend. It was beautiful. My one and only complaint was that the bathroom door opened into the room, right into the entrance door. Others here have reported that theirs opened into the bathroom, so I don't know if ours was the exception or what. However from tlaking to the Bellman, that took our bags up to the room, it is a common complaint.

If you plan on staying onsite be sure to sign up for the Loews Hotel card.

What is the Loews card? A discount card? Credit card? What advantages does it have and where do I get one?
