I dropped Emily off at school this morning. There are probably 4 trailers sitting in the yard. Sad that a school that is only 2 years old has already outgrown its capacity. :sad2: Ang
They had just build a brand new elementary school here when ds started attending 3 years ago. They have already run out of classrooms when they ended up having 60 4th graders and only 2 classes. They added a teacher, but had trouble finding space for another room! Who's planning these schools, anyway :confused3 .

Angie,
As far as feeling out of place: You're pulling "Double Duty" - holding down a job outside the home PLUS the work you do raising a family -- you're entitled to dress ANY WAY YOU WANT!! :thumbsup2 (and be *proud* of it too!)
Exactly what she said!

UTOP!

They just don't plan ahead! There is a strip of stores we like to haunt. When we used to live in that area, there was a couple of stores, a couple of restaurants and a two lane street. They slowly expanded the place so that as far as you can see, it's big anchor stores in the back (old navy, michaels, bed bath and beyond, etc) and in the front are smaller stores and restaurants. Still the same two lane street. So the traffic there is HORRENDOUS. Don't even THINK of making a left hand turn!!

NOW that it's all built up and the traffic is AWFUL....NOW they are going to widen the street!!! They KNEW it was going to get bad, why not widen the street when there was very little traffic on it?

Mike gave me some story about how they had to get the tax money from those businesses to be able to AFFORD to widen the street....but I like to think a little more cynically than that and say they did it just to annoy us!

But...same thing might be going on with the schools. Build for what you have now (and can collect taxes for) and then when new ppl move in you have to build again, but at least can tax the new ppl too in order to get the $$$.

:confused3

Try 7 kindergarten classes this year ... and Emily has 18 kids in her class! And that was one more class than they had last year.

WOW! 7 kindergartens! I can't imagine. All of my kids went to (or are going to) small town schools (grad. class of 30 - 40).

Angie -- don't feel bad about being a working mom. I have worked all of my life even when my kids were small. I sometimes felt really out of the norm, because most of my daughter's friends mom didn't work. She would feel left out when I couldn't come by at lunchtime. One day I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up (she was about 7 at the time) and she responded that she wanted to be like Ally's mom, a PTA mom. I got a good laugh out of it.

Most of my daughter's friends are quite a bit wealthier then we are, but only one of them has ever been on a cruise and only a couple have been to WDW. I feel like we do the best we can with what we have and we want our kids to have cherished memories of their childhood vacations.

Pam, in elementary and mid-school, some of the kids were calling DD "rich girl". This was because we often took her on trips to WDW and cruising. I guess their family trips were much more modest. Some of these kids live way up in the foothills, in homes that are $500k plus. And we live in a much more modest home. It's all in your priorities, I guess.

I've got to say though, those priorities start to look different when your kid starts to grow up, and you're thinking about college. Sad. But she will have some great memories!

Maggie has 8 third grade classes of anywhere between 18-22 in each class. Most of the grade levels have 7-8 classes per grade. H.S. graduating classes here are around 1000+ !!!! Mike's incoming 6th grade class at the middle school will be over 300 kids - which is roughly the size of my h.s. graduating class.

I'm hoping and praying he'll stay with a good group of kids, get involved in activities and not fall through the cracks with soo many kids...

The brand new intermediate school which opened in the fall, has portable classrooms already.

Don't feel bad about showing up in jeans - it always feels like a fashion show whenever I show up in school. But, maybe because I'm usually on my way to/from teaching exercise and I'm in workout clothes...I know Maggie doesn't usually care what I'm wearing, she's more excited I'm there... Well, except for the one time she said "you're not wearing THAT when you come to school, are you....???"

I love your attitude! Maybe it's because I resemble it! :thumbsup2

I went back later for a mother's breakfast in the classroom. I sort of felt out of place. All of the other mom's were dressed in their Sunday best. There I was in blue jeans. As programmers that NEVER see customers, we're very casual. I RARELY dress up. And, somehow I felt like I'm the only working mom. I was at a table of 4 and I was the only one that worked.

Adding my thoughts

YOU WERE THERE FOR YOUR DAUGHTER.....How many times do we hear that parents do not participate.......So you work, this is a good role model for your DD. She will grow up appreciating your efforts and most probably will need to work herself. Some families can manage without one parent working. My childhood was not like that.....most are not....AND as some have posted, the balance of vacation, family and work.....While not applicable to our Dis Friends, I see children of non-working Mothers who do not pitch in and expect everything to be given to them....Real Life ain't like that....at least not in Florida.

Sermon over....besides, if it really bothers you, make yummy cupcakes and send them to school...then all the kids say you are the best Mom....ok, actually, I was going to post, that you could wear other clothes, but I think cupcakes is better.... :teeth: :teeth:

When mine went to kindergarten they had 32 kids each in 11 class rooms. And now that new middle school opened last year for her there is not enough room because the lovely county decided we needed more people so new develpment with 5000 new homes is underway. So new high school that they just broke ground for is not going to work. Has anyone else heard of schools being built with no sprinkler systems. New middle school opened last year with only 7 fires in it for the year. Mostly electrical but school has no sprinklers and sometimes they did not even evacuate the children. Just wondering. Anyone heard of the "Southern Building code for schools"????? :confused3 People that design them have no children and never have to drive in the parking lot to get them. Our school only has one handicapped exit or entrance so kids have to fight to get to front to get out against all the kids going the other way. Hoping they never get caught between fire doors that lock and that fire is never in front of school.

Mark & Mary,

I think I'm going to "run" with the newspaper door sign that I posted this morning. Can I steal some of the write-up about Scoopie that you have on the Personal Navigator?

Angie

You sure can because I stole most of it from Scoopie's site that Monica put up. :)

Angie - I'm late to the party about you being a working mom but let me add me 2 cents. My parents split up when I was just a baby. My mom was always a working mom growing up in the 60's when most other mom's still stayed home and baked cookies etc. She did the best she could for us and she was a great role model. I'm proud to say that say that I can be independent in my thinking because of her. You are doing the same with your daughter. Be proud of who you are!

Well, we are documented. Lime green luggage tags and a surprise! Two Walt Disney Travel Company lanyards and four pins. That was nice. Stacey, I will still help you hand out cups on deck 9.

Angie,

I also am the product of two working parents. I turned out alright. Didn't I? Nevermind. Don't go with that argument!! :) :lmao: :lmao:

Lookie there. A U TOP. I was perusing the Community Board. MY, lots of topics there. :earseek:

Irene, this made me smile. We had to go pick up cupcakes for a party in Ashley's class tomorrow. The girls pleaded for cupcakes for home ... I couldn't say no! So after dinner tonight, we had Mom cupcakes for dessert. I am the best mom ever in their eyes & that's what counts.

Ang

Thanks for the support everyone! Just some days I get down about being a working mom. Some days I wish that I was a stay-at-home mom but keep reminding myself that with me working, we can afford to do more things as a family, will be able to retire early & pay for the girls' educations later (hopefully). Besides, the girls don't mind going to day care. That's all they've ever known. Emily can't wait to go spend the summer with all of her buddies at day care.

Both of my parents worked but they were both in education. They were always around and I don't remember ever doing after-care.

Ok ... back to the fluff now.
