Hey, whats the address of the port? I wanna put it in my nifty little GPS unit!!! For our trip next weekend! I wish yall were coming with us next weekend too!

HI Amanda - thought of you today. We took our refresher dive, more about that later, and the boat captain insisted on calling one of the divers Amanda......so you were with us in "name only"......

Been off the boards and see there are 100 posts to read...I will not post 100 replies :rotfl:

The hip has healed pretty well (just a limp) and they took the second cast off this week. We are going up later this afternoon to see her and make sure she has settle okay. She lives about 20 miles from us. Good driving experience for Dale

Glas she is recovered. My mother's biggest fear is falling......I guess I see why!

Just to compare, my November cruise just recently celebrated their 1000 post, not page, but post.....

Happy Sunday Folks - and we can never forget 9-11!

Friday we went out with friends - had wonder wine (too much), a nice blue-cheese and iceberg salad, and the avocado and crab tower (too little). Sam ahd normal food. then went to the Irish Pub for Smithwicks (too many, if there is such a thing).

Saturday I stopped by to See Mother (too short) , took the cats to the vet (too expensive) and jumped in the pool to try out (again) mask, fins and snorkel for the dive today....(too cold).

Drove up to Watersports World after a nap (way too short) to try on a shortie afterall (way to tight). How hysterical.

Ladies, there is no justice in the world, none.....For those who have never tried, think of a really long girdle. You are trying to put on one of these, they label unisex - ok right - that's a joke. I take 2 sizes - do they fit (no). Sam is in the dressing room with me trying to pull up the zipper - this is not fun. I get one on, (sorta). I seek professional help, the only lady sales clerk, who, after she stops laughing says - nope try another.

I go to the ladies rack, where I pull on off the hanger, my dress size (hah). this one is made for a lady my size with endowments like Dolly Parton....(sales clerk is still laughing). Then I try to find a smaller size (hah, none made in that make). So, we are now up to the $$$ suits, and try the size I that Dolly would wear - too tight.... Sam is being patient, but the laughing is getting louder. Then I try another - ok it fits, but I cannot eat anything more than a jelly bean or it won't.

Now it is Sam's turn. He takes 2 (that is it 2) into the room. the first one fits. (arrrghhrhr).

But, ont he way in, I spot the sales rack....there is one marked 2 sizes to big, but it is on sale (way too good to be true sale) and I put it on and (drum roll), it fits......Guess it was mis marked.

We leave (way too broke) to grab some dinner (way too hungry) and no booze (way to nervous for the dive the next morning (way to early).

Irene...I like the way you told that story.....at least I'm not the only one. I hadn't worn a wet suit in years...till we decided to dive on the Mexican Riviera cruise. How humiliating!

I've been cleaning out my closet...mostly the shoes. My 13 yr old niece wants the discards. She's the only one still small enough to wear my size, except my baby great-nieces.
What a pain, though.......I feel like the Imelda Marcos of Cave Creek! No one should have that many pairs of shoes. Especially since all I ever wear are my trusty Reebok's.

Okay....back into the closet. :wave2:

Refresher Diver

Jim, Kevin, Stacey - thanks for the Good Luck (hope I did not leave anyone out).

The waves had calmed down since the storm passed (not really, but that is what the weather man said).

We had to arise at 5:30 to make it to the docks on time and it was a beautiful morning. The seas looked calm (ish).

Our instructor met us and there were 5 other divers, plus the boat captain and crew. It was a great bunch. The equipment overview was very informative.....things have changed since I dove before. Thanks for the tip Kevin, I had purcahsed the updated YMCA scuba book and read up before, inlcluding the 2 hour wait at the vet.

While there are no dive tables anymore, the BC compensation is a bit of an art. I had described Sam as an XL, but the instructor said he is a large but the XL BC fit. He can't tell what size I am (see above post). Good luck renting he says.... Next we are weighted up....that too is new, as there is no more weight belt. Yippee....

Standard equipment check, buddy check and then weight to get to dive site where Captain reads the standard list of emergency equipment, first run movie, oxegyn mask briefings.

We went last off, of course, and (true confessions) I was a tad more than a bit nervous when I hit the water.....I was thinking pool, pool, pool.....The instructor walked (swam) me though the descent, the ears kept plugging but I was able to clear, but once I was down, it was wonderful.

Visability was low, I thought they said 30 feet - we were off Palm Beach (help -teardrop?), but for someone who has not popped her head below water, it was Wonderful, the fish were brilliant (I have tried to find a good site for pictures, but can't, so if you have a good identification site, let me know). This reef was nostly flat and there was a good current. I tried to follow each fish I saw, much to the dismay of the instructor. I kept having to catch up, until I caught on and drifted with the tide...but then there were more fish and little crevices and coral and - what is that noise, oh yes, I am off course again. Much of the time was spent with checking the computer, good, as they were new to us, and getting the feel again of the gear. There were sea turtles in the water, the other group saw them, we were not so lucky. We did have schools of angel fish and one large grouper. I liked the tiny zebra fish that darted in the coral.

Then it was time to ascend....(way to soon considering the consternation of my descent). This was strange and new - looking at the computer to mark your ascent and then trying to stay in one place for 3 minutes. I have much to learn about the BC.

After the ascent it was mask clearing drills. Didn't do too well, partially because I had no clue what the instructor was trying to get me to do. I have a purge and he was clearing the old way.....oh well, the boat picked us up and then came the swells.........

I get motion sick.....(why am I diving).......

The rest of the group had boarded before us, even the guy diving Nitrox...I thought we would be the first up, having used up our air quicker and of course, we had to surface at 1000 not 750 (boat rules).

We went to the Breakers 5th window for the second dive - We had a dolphin escort - how cool!.

I really, really do not like swells......The isntructor kep thinking I was too hot but it was my stomach, not the heat of the wet suit, (Thanks for the tip Jim, I would have been way too cold otherwise....thank you thank you thank you).

The descent was much easier and this reef was a ledge. We were with the main group most of the time. Among the fish I know the name of that we saw was a puffer, I love puffers, and a pencil fish and a cool squirrel fish (I think) and great purple coral and lobster. One of the divers was a fish collector and he brought back some neat specimens, inlcuding a starfish that loked like a tangled up mass of rubber bands.....

Then it was time to go up (why - I still had air left....????) Oh, yes, my buddy, forgot about him...got admonished that Sam and I depended on instructor too much and need to check each other out....too many fish to see....too new......

this time we followed the line up, I got turned sideways with the swells, and my tummy did not enjoy the wait at 15 feet.....liked it even less when I boarded, still not the first ones up - hum----

I discovered how to make sure people keep a safe distance from you when you are on board....the rest of the group surfaced and it was time to wave goodbye to the dolphin and return to the dock.....

Had a lesson in breaking down equipment and other hints on using rental equipment. The instructor took lots of time to explain things...Before our first dive, I had the tank with the leaky O ring, and it was not even a set up for me to find the hissing air...

I thought I was terrible and he would be glad never to see us again, but apparently we checked out and he will be giving us a second lesson at the end of the month...I need another lesson....this time without swells.

Of course, I toppled into bed and have just woken up......There is a refrigerator full of Smithwick's in bottles, first ones in our area, but tummy is none to sure.

Thanks for letting me rattle on......and 'scuse typos...

Maybe now all DH's will understand why the label on ladies sizes should be followed by a disclaimer....someone - somewhere - who thinks they may, at some time of their life, be or has been, near, around, or slightly approximately, with the range of the measurements, this garment is holding out to be, HAD BETTER TRY IT ON!!!

Based on this what size do I tell Disney I wear when we dive the Living Seas? the Dive Instructor starting mentioning what a great experience it was....We had not even mentioned the mouse.

Jim - he sais the great part was the interaction with the guests.....Also, I think he was hoping I go there 'cause I cannot get lost...

Not to worry!! Folks are always nervous when doing something new! Dive tables are still used, but computers are so much better and will give you much better bottom time after you get your air consumption rates down!!
Visability was low, I thought they said 30 feet - we were off Palm Beach (help -teardrop?), but for someone who has not popped her head below water, it was Wonderful, the fish were brilliant (I have tried to find a good site for pictures, but can't, so if you have a good identification site, let me know). The Palm Beach area is mostly drift dives. Actually, a very relaxing way to dive. Just chill and let the current take you along. The boat picks you up at the end of the dive. A great fish ID site is here There are books written by Paul Humann and Ned DeLoach that are wonderful. Reef Fish and Reef Creatures.

Then it was time to ascend....(way to soon considering the consternation of my descent). This was strange and new - looking at the computer to mark your ascent and then trying to stay in one place for 3 minutes. I have much to learn about the BC.

Aw yes!! Neutral buoyancy!! Harder than it looks. Use your breathing and the lungs to help.
After the ascent it was mask clearing drills. Didn't do too well, partially because I had no clue what the instructor was trying to get me to do. I have a purge and he was clearing the old way.....oh well, the boat picked us up and then came the swells.........

That stinks!! We like boats that will let us use our gas. Heck, we paid for it!!

Great report!!

Now, to get you diving more and more. The nerves will go away, to be replaced by anticipation. If you're prone to motion sickness and it sounds like you might be. Just take the meds the night before to get into your system and then the morning of. It will be MUCH better after that! Alicia is prone to motion sickness and that's what I do with her. Don't forget to look out across the horizon instead of your booties, that will help too!!

Glad you had fun, Beer tastes amazingly good after a couple of dives!!!

Here's a quote from Dave Barry:

"I will spare you a gushy description of the dive itself, except to say that when you finally see what goes on underwater, you realize that you've been missing the whole point of the ocean. Staying on the surface all the time is like going to the circus and staring at the outside of the tent." - Dave Barry

When Jim, Matt, Alicia and I did the Epcot dive Alicia spent the entire "free time" of the dive blowing kisses and messing around in front of the guests/Mom!! I was trying to get her to look at some of the marine life, but oh well........
You'll love the experience!! I would do it again!!

You will notice that not all wetsuit manufactures size their stuff the same way. Bare has the most stock sizes and there sizes are pretty realistic. Some of the others size them small for some reason!!

I think (IIRC) that Epcot uses ScubaPro gear. Tell them your size of your present suit and they will use their judgment from there. I hear NO laughing :rotfl2:

Thanks for the fishbase list -- I am exploring to find my favourtie from today.

Can you not cut and paste their images?

I only wear my Birkenstocks or sneakers (with my orthodics). My dress shoes are dressy Birkenstock! For pool/beach wear it is my Tevas. CodyJ is having a tea party, dress and hat suggested. I don't have a dress!!!!!!! Guess I really am an unsocial hermit(unless I am cruising)!

I'm with you - I hate shoes....although I do own dresses...most (work does not count) are Hawaiian or Easter, and my two new formal additions for the cruise...And since I hate cleaning closets, I have Easter dresses for the past 15 years (ok, I had Easter dresses....I did complete the dreaded closet cleaning recently).

Dresses went on their way to Good Will......

I made the mistake of "trying them on" :rotfl2:

I grew up going barefoot, so shoes are something you leave in the car until you have to put them on......

'cept for hiking boots, they are ok.

Jim,

How were the Huevos Rancheros. Love them. We have some of the best here in El Paso.

We have had a busy day here today, stripped the tile, sealed and rewaxed, cleaned out all the junk corners, all that good stuff and I am still doing Laundry. UGHHHHHHH.

Is tomorrow really Monday? I think I just want to stay home.
