Time out for a personal - political message - please...

Remember the stores are open July 4th because people who are off on July 4th will go there. If people did not go, the stores will be closed. Remember your friends who cannot take the day off, because you did not plan and inisted on stopping in for one more bag of ice, hamburgers, or just because it was convenient to go to the store that day.

OK - political message over....thanks for bearing with me...

And thank a BudMan who's working on the 4th so that you can pick up that last minute 12-pack! (In fact, ya better pick up 2...) Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day & New Year's Day are our only 3 holidays...

WOW! Three holidays a year? The ONLY day Mike's pediatric office is closed is Christmas Day. Yup. That's it. They are open Easter, Thanksgiving, 4th of July and every other day and holiday for your convenience.

But just b/c they are closed on Christmas doesn't mean they are off. They still take your phone calls AND round on any unfortunate kid who has to be in the hospital on Christmas Day.

yes be he also gets 6 (really 5) weeks of vacation. The DH is lucky to get 2 weeks, then again according to the DH I am on vacation 24/7 365 because I am at home with the kids. I guess I should not be complaining I could have work outside the home and not be there for the kids so I guess I will have to take the working vacation 365 24/7.

We leave July 13. No ship. This is a land tour with Tauck tours, Call of the Wild program. It's their family program which includes lots of activities to keep the kids happy.

Cool...even better. They're taking a few extra days as an add-on. I hope they get a chance to do some cool stuff.

Yesterday was proof positive that I'm blessed to be home. KT and Nick were at acting camp. It's a 25 minute drive into town each way. I was going to leave to pick them up at 2:30, but at 1:50 the phone rings. There is a sad little voice on the other end saying "mom, will you come pick me up, I don't feel well." Awwwwwww. KT was coming down with a fever---chills/headache/yuck. So I walked out of the house and went to get her (sat in the parking lot in the car with her for 45 mintues so Nick could finish)

But driving in to get her I could not help but think how great it is that I have the honor and privledge of staying home with them.

Gotta say, he doesn't GET 6...he takes 6. BUT...... for doctors who are not on salary (he's not, he pays all of his own expenses---rent, staff, cost of vaccines he uses, cost of strep tests he orders, etc etc) these are all UNPAID vacations. B/c if he's not seeing patients and generating charges, he doesn't get paid for that time at all. Usually he'll see it 3 or 4 weeks after he gets back.....a big slump in insurance reimbursements b/c he was gone on vacation and therefore isn't getting paid for that time.

edited to add, one of the docs he works with takes ONE week of vacation a year b/c he can't stand the fact that he's "losing" money while he's on vacation......besides having to PAY for vacation, he's not MAKING any money back at the office. Just a difference in philosophies, I guess.

I get 18 work days, soon to be 20 and we get 6 personal days and 9 public holidays.
I make sure I put them to good use

Yes, DH has the same problem, when he is not there he is not earning so besides paying for vacation he is not making money while on the vacation, luckily he has me working.

I work but if my kids call for something I am lucky enough to be a couple of minutes from their school and luckily have an understanding boss who knows my family come first. After being here close to 10 years they know that I don't take advantage of them. Between DH, my dad and myself we are available to pick them up and schlep at all the odd camp hours, some days DS has camp from 9 - 1 and then DD has from 10 - 3. I love being able to work and get established after moving here at the age of 28 and being available for my kids.
I take my hat off to stay at home moms cause I think my kids are better off with me working!!!

edited to add, one of the docs he works with takes ONE week of vacation a year b/c he can't stand the fact that he's "losing" money while he's on vacation......besides having to PAY for vacation, he's not MAKING any money back at the office. Just a difference in philosophies, I guess.

So when he dies, are his kids going to want to take a day off for the funeral, or will they be too busy making more money? Priorities ya know... they get passed down from generation to generation.

(My dad, on the other hand, figured out that if he took a bartending job at the Knights of Columbus on Friday nights (where he hung out on Friday nights ANYWAY), he could afford to take us on a cruise every 2 years when we were kids... THANKS DAD!!)

I grew up with my mom always saying that no-one is indespensible - life goes on and you might as well take a couple vacations a year as if you got sick and had to be in hospital for 3 weeks you would have to take the time so you might as well enjoy your life and time with the kids, needles to say all 4 of us kids do a pretty good job at having good vacations every year.
Another thing she always said was ' when you are young you cannot afford to travel and when you are old you don't have the energy to travel'

I guess I am passing this down to my kids!!!

it just goes to show what some parents will go through to support their children. We didn't grow up poor but we always family meals and a family vacation even if it was the beach for a day. I will always remember those day of my parents working two jobs so they could provide for me and my three siblings. The DH and I are really lucky he only has to work one job, I get to stay home, and we can afford to take the kids on awesome vacations like the disney cruise. An added bonus we just joined the DVC this last cruise since we've been on two cruises and spent what it would have cost us to join DVC back in 2004 so we took the plunge. I guess the DH will have to wait on that new car and keep this 95 Honda for a little while longer.

OM, I had to laugh, I was reading pediascribe and there is a commercial for netflix while telling us to spend quality time with our family away from the technology!!!

Love OM stories though just thought it funny!!!

HA HA. FUnny you should mention that. Mike had me read his last pediascribe as soon as it was posted and he mentioned that..."and hey, a Netflix ad right on that page!"

But Netflix is good! Last night Mike and I watched Season 1, Disc 1, Episode 1 of LOST (we have never watched it before).....uh....what's the big thing tromping around in the jungle?????? That's scary!

And the kids get lots of educational videos on Netflix. We watched one of the Life of Mammals disks and it was really good.

I thought that too but then decided that if you are on the dis it could be planning that family trip and doing the parks is sure good excersize and family bonding (at least for some)!!
