4yr old Dental Insurance?

We added our daughter at birth. I am not sure what your dental plan allows for adding a dependant. We didn't go until age 3. Our dentist is a pediatric dentist and has patience for kids. I have horrible memories of our dentist as a kid. Anyway my daughter just turned 5 and is able to sit through cleanings.

Don't forget that they like to start x-rays as well every other visit. The x-rays show the growth of the permanent teeth as well as any problems with the baby ones.

FWIW, Ds's dentist said that an xray to visualize the permanent teeth would be a special xray; their usual ones are really focused and don't see the permanent teeth. (almost as soon as I asked him about it, DS started losing teeth and I stopped wondering when it would happen LOL)

I just added my DD to the dental insurance for next year, she's 18 months old. Her front teeth are starting to yellow because she will NOT let us brush them. We do what we can but we don't want to turn teeth brushing into something she hates. She likes to "brush" her own teeth, but all she really does is chew on the brush. So after the first of the year, once she's on the insurance, we're going to take her to a pediatric dentist. Hopefully they'll be able to get her to open up so she can at least get a check up.

Just as a FWIW....DS despised tooth brushing. Screamed bloody murder. We worried every time we brushed his teeth that someone was going to call the police. It Was Awful. He was totally completely FINE and good and happy in the dentist's chair (of course they have TVs in their ceiling and he got to watch movies he'd never seen during visits). Remember, he's been seeing them since he was 1.

But toothbrushing was absolutely horrible until he was well into being 3.

And then suddenly the "oh this is OK" light was switched, and it was fine.

It worked out for us, but we KNEW he had problems anyway (FIL's baby teeth ALL crumbled, DH had some crumble, so DS having just two was pretty good...hopefully his children won't have any problems as long as he chooses well in who he has babies with) and knew that it was very very important, so important that we had absolutely no choice but to brush them no matter how he felt about it.

But it sure was horrid while he was in that long long phase.

All of our kids were added at birth. We use a pediatric dentist that wanted to start seeing the children when they had 2 teeth. It wasn't a full cleaning but it helped them get used to going to the dentist. I would be afraid if I waited until they were 3 or 4 or 5 that they would be scared to death to have someone poking around in their mouth.

We added ds at birth - at the time dh only had 2 options: single enrollment or family, so adding ds didn't cost any extra. Once we had dd we had a new dental plan and each person added on cost money. We waited until she was 2 (you could do open enrollment on the child's birthday) ... both of my kids started going to the dentist when they were 2 for cleanings/flouride treatment twice a year. Ds had a tiny cavity in one of his molars (against his cheek, in the little indent on the tooth) and had to have it filled. Even though they lose their baby teeth, they still have to be taken care of as though they were adult teeth (to a certain degree -- ds has a cavity on his molar now, which if he were a grown up he'd get a crown but since it will be falling out w/in 2 years they are just building it up w/ filling)

ours were added at birth since we have to pay for the family plan- doesnt matter how many are on it.. anyhow mine have been going for check ups/cleanings for as long as I can remember..

A regular panaramic x-ray showed my son's permanent teeth under the baby teeth. Nothing really special as far as an x-ray goes. My brother is a dentist and he does x-rays first appointment if the child cooperates.
