Eek! It's our last full day. We woke up feeling pretty lousy from the previous night's alcohol consumption. Earlier than I would have liked, my husband went downstairs to retrieve our son. They didn't make it onto Test Track the night before because of the storm, but did stay for Illuminations. Not sure where they watched from, but it couldn't have been near Mexico or Norway, or we would have seen them.
I called my sister, and we made plans to meet her and her DH at their resort. I wanted to check it out for future reference, and all DS wanted to do was swim. So after a quick in-room breakfast, we packed our swimsuits and a change of clothes, then took the boat to MK and the bus to Port Orleans Riverside from there.
Sis and her hubby were waiting for us at the bus station. (I believe we got off at the South Depot--we got at the one she told us to use.) We walked over a bridge and headed toward their building, which I believe was Parterre Place. Oh, this resort is just beautiful! We stayed in Port Orleans French Quarter in 9/00 and loved it; this place seems every bit as wonderful.
We changed into our bathing suits in their room, then headed over to the main swimming pool, where we spent a few hours enjoying the sun and water. I wanted to see the room and thought it was lovely. Similar to our room at PO-FQ in 9/00, but with a blue/teal color scheme instead of green/gold.
The pool area is also very nice with plenty of lounge chairs. The pool itself is quite large. It has a lattice divider in the middle that I've read it is there temporarily until they shore up the bridge above it.
Later that day, I discovered that the bar there was offering one dollar "floaters" for your frozen cocktails. That is, for an extra $1, they'll float an additional shot of rum on top of your pina colada or strawberry margarita. Woo hoo! If only the WL offered something this! All their pool bar offered was a daily special that was a drink in a plastic souvenir glass with lots and lots of juice. We tried a couple and found them far too watered down. Rum floaters, on the other hand, were something we enjoyed much at the Contemporary Resort in 9/00. When I saw them at PORs pool bar, I was quite happy.
We ate lunch in the food court. We split a large pizza with 4 topping, special deal. Also, got DS a childs pasta meal because he doesnt like "messy" pizza (i.e., he likes only plain without too much cheese). The pizza was very good, and the atmosphere of the food court is just lovely. We talked about what to do for dinner; we toyed with the idea of taking the boat Downtown and eating somewhere there. But we all feeling very relaxed and figured DD would be jumping because it was Saturday night. We also thought we might be facing a big wait at any DD restaurant we chose, so we walked over to PORs restaurant to check out their dinner menu. It looked fine, so I called for a 6:30 P.S. when we got back to my sisters room.
After lunch, we walked around the marina pier, looking in the water for bass. My brother-in-law had gone on a fishing excursion the day before that was a total bust. He was supposed to travel down the Sassagoula to fish in the lake in Downtown Disney. Instead, the excursion guy took him to the Old Key West resort and they fished in some canals there. They caught nothing. His guide told him that a catch was guaranteed, so he could either not be charged or go again on the Sunday of his visit. He opted for the Sunday fishing trip. (More on that later.)
In any event, BIL was amazed at the number of large bass we saw in the water. All he saw the day before were "brin" or "brim" which is the Florida name for what we call sunnies in New Jersey. A large, pink bird followed us around the dock, looking for a hand-out. BIL fed him some pizza crust. (We saw lots of these birds around the Wilderness Lodge, too. I wonder what theyre called?)
We went to swim and hang at the pool that afternoon and enjoyed a couple of drinks with floaters. Twice, some really big thunderstorms rolled through. The first storm, the lifeguards cleared out the pool while it was still sunny. The folks were like, what storm? The guards said they'd been warned via their radios, and sure enough, in no time, the skies darkened. We made it back to the room before getting drenched.
We ate at Boatwright's and made a faux pas in that three of us ordered the filet mignon dish, which turned out to not be so good. The meat had a "livery" taste to it. My BIL got some kind of fish dish and raved about it. Our service was excellent, and we liked the atmosphere of the place.
After dinner, I did some looking around the gift shop while the others went to the lounge to check out Bob the piano player. Wow! That guy is a hoot and a half. What fun!
It was a rather uneventful day, but tiring all the same, so we decided to head back to the Wilderness Lodge. We took the boat to Downtown and caught the bus from there.
