4 Wisdom teeth pulled, can't smoke...Help!

Smoking is THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO TO YOUR HEALTH.
NOTHING, I mean NOTHING does more damage to your body than smoking.
It's not just your lungs you damage, it is the cause of arterial disease, gum disease, heart disease and the #1 cause of most cancers, not just lung. I know smoking is an addiction, but you must quit. The reason you're having tooth issues now is due more to cancer than your dental hygenine, I guarantee that. Your home smells, your clothes smell, you smell. Your arteries are building plaque at a faster pace than non-smokers because you smoke. Your gums are being hit with damage daily due to smoking. My own father CANNOT WALK AT AGE 66 BECAUSE HE HAS P.A.D DUE TO SMOKING, ARTERIAL DISEASE THAT ALMOST CAUSED A HEART ATTACK DUE TO SMOKING AND NOW HE CANNOT WALK. My kids cannot stand to go see him because the house is unbearably filled with smoke, and they love their grandpa.

Have you tried Chantix? Have you tried the patch? If you smoked for 25 years, why did you start? That was WELL AFTER people knew it was dangerous! I cannot believe the teens who smoke now, even though they knew it is bad.

I spent a week on the set of Patrick Swayze's new tv show and he smokes like a chimmney even though he suspects his pancreatic cancer was caused by smoking (which it most likely was)...it was so sad to see this man struggling with cancer but still smoking cigarette after cigarette. What an additiction.

Please pardon my soap box, but too many people close to me have been damaged by smoking. Do what you must to quit! You can do it!!! The fact that you've posted here shows you have the strength.

Well thanks for telling me I smell! Although I already knew that as my sister has always been kind enough to let me know how much the kids cloths stunk of smoke anytime she had them over for a night.
I am very sorry to hear about your dad and I too believe it or not have lost many people to smoking and I continued to smoke.
I am the first one to tell you if it wasn't for my toothach and not wanting dry sockets I would still be puffing away. The fear of the pain returning or an even worse pain is what has kept me from not buying a pack and the fact that my husband quit with me(God Bless him for that)
As for Patrick Swayze, I am not surprised he is still smoking. I guess he figures he enjoys it, and he can't fix anything now so he may as well enjoy what little time he has, its not my place to judge him.
To answer you question about why I started. I was 13 years old. I knew nothing of the bad things smoking did to you. I had no idea how addictive it was or how hooked I would become. I hung out with people who smoked, boyfriends smoked, grandparents, aunt, uncles, my dad still smokes 2 packs a day and my mother is a nervous smoker. It was the norm and the next thing I knew it has been 25 years.:confused3
Thank you for the support and I am trying but you should give those who can't quit a break, its really really hard. I have 5 children and gave birth to them all naturally, this beats that hands down as the hardest thing I have ever done and I aint even done yet its only been 6 days.

Nice new ticker!!!

My ticker really really helped me. Seeing just how much money I was saving :cool1:

I went out and bought my family camping equipment with the money I saved!

:woohoo:

I was going to add a smokefree ticker to my siggie to show my support but it only goes back to 2004. I quit in 2003.

You go girl!!! I've been away from this thread for a while and glad to see you're sticking with it!
Love your ticker!!
Be strong!

Good for you!!!!

I quit almost 7 years ago (yikes didn't realize it was so long ago) cold turkey and my DH just quit Jan 7 w/the help of Chantix. It is certainly one of the hardest things I did so I know what you are going thru. Hang in there because it gets easier and easier and is so worth it. :thumbsup2

Way to turn a negative experience into a positive!

When my BIL quit, he started to carry a pen with him. When he felt the urge to smoke, he would put the pen in his mouth, take it out, put it back in, etc. He did this for years and years after he quit.

Just wanted to let everyone know I am still going strong:cool1:

This is WONDERFUL news!! I offer my sincere congratulations and I hope dearly that you can continue!!
I'm sure I don't need to tell you that you have four fantastic daughters and a super son (although I see they are teenagers and I'm sure there are moments that the fantastic and super qualities are questionable! :lmao:) who all love you and desperately NEED you to be here for them for a long time to come!!

I speak from experience . . . . I am a motherless daughter whose mom died of lung cancer when I was 30 and my children (her first grandchildren) were only four. She adored them more than life and could not have been a better Nana to them. Their little faces lit up at the thought of seeing her each visit! :goodvibes I swear that I would give up everything I own to have her back for one more day. She was only 56 and very vibrant and youthful - she celebrated her 50th at WDW, in fact!

I know you know all this . . . but if you could just hear from one daughter how painful it is to lay your head on your pillow each night and want more than anything in the world to have your mom back, please do it for them!

I appreciate the difficulty you are facing. My own mom stopped and started again more times than I have fingers and toes for counting and I applaud her (and YOU!) for having the courage to try! I sometimes feel that I have the same issue with food - wanting to eat when I know I don't need to and should find another diversion, but the temptation is very hard to resist. God bless you for trying and keep seeking the prayers and support you need to continue. My grandmother (mom's mother) also died of lung cancer but she had quit in her forties and she lived to be 76. Not a day goes by when I don't wonder if I could have had another 20 years with my mom had she been successful in doing the same at that age! Those 20 years will make all the difference in the lives of your daughters, your son, and your future grandchildren (and your DH too!).

I wish I had some helpful hints or tips but just think of them when you feel the urge and imagine a grandchild running out of the house one day with open arms to greet you and laughter that fills your heart with a joy for which only you can know the true appreciation! All the best to you!!!

Thanks for sharing your story. :sad1: I'm so choked up and teary-eyed. I hope it helps the OP and everyone else trying to stay strong with whatever battle their facing. :grouphug:

I have justified countless cruises and vacations with my parents with the belief that life and family are such precious gifts and I want my kids to really remember good times with their parents and grandparents. :goodvibes

Just wanted to let everyone know I am still going strong:cool1:

FANTASTIC!!!!! :yay: Really, really wonderful! I know you have heard a lot of stories on the thread about all of the awful things that can happen to people who smoke, and I'm sure that you know about most of them. But now a bit of uplifting news....
I work at a hospital and teach education/prevention classes for our stroke center. The medical director of our stroke center loves to throw around statistics...usually scary ones aimed at frightening people into change. But one stat that he loves to share is this...THE DAY AFTER YOU QUIT SMOKING, YOU DROPPED YOUR RISK OF HAVING A STROKE BY 50%!!! The day after! Just think of what you have done to improve and protect your health! BRAVO to you!!!!!
:cheer2: :worship:  :dance3: :woohoo: :yay:

It's gets easier the first few months, but stick with it. Make the decision to be healthy and around long enough to annoy your children! LOL!

If you find yourself struggling, try the patch or gum. You'll still get your fix without all of the smoke. A friend of mine was a dedicated smoker so much so that he would wear the patch if he was on a flight for more than 1 hour. He managed to quit, and you can do it too!
