so the boy finally turned 18 and in the eyes of the law and the Disney bean counters he is an adult. so, if our family of 4 now consists of an 18 year old do we have to pay an extra charge for him to be in our room? does it matter that the room we are considering is at the poly and sleeps 5? if there is a charge, does it change per resort/room level or is it uniform? and what is it?

Yes after 2 adults in a room you have to pay for a 3rd or 4th.

Yes, you will be charged the extra adult fee per night, even at the Poly where the occupancy is 5. The amount goes by the level of resort. The deluxe resorts are $25/night; moderates are $15/night; and values are $10/night. But as others have posted, it's an industry standard and isn't just Disney that charges that extra fee for any adults over 2 in a room.

Hotel rates in the US are generally quoted at "double occupancy." That means that the quoted rate is for up to two persons in the room. If there are more than two persons in the room, the rate is higher.

Now, Disney resorts exclude children from that, additional kids do not incur a surcharge. Your rate, however, will go up for each additional adult on the reservation.

So yes, even though the room at the Poly sleeps five, your rate will go up by $25/night if you have three adults in the room instead of two.

Yep. I have now have two kids who will be over 18 on the next trip. My rate of $351+tax a night at BC went up to $401+tax. Ugh.

As an accountant, I really don't like when things like this are blamed on us. We just follow the industry standards or the fire codes or the laws. Not everything is about money.

Our last Disney trip was 3 adults. Staying at All Star Music we considered a Family Suite & were told you don't pay for extra adults in those rooms. But I don't know for sure since we ended up getting 2 standard rooms next to each other instead.

Yes, if you are staying there on points or book through DVC Member Services. Don't know if they will charge if you book through CRO. In most matters a booking through CRO in a villa is treated like any other resort, but if they don't charge for extra adults in the family suites they may not for the villas, especially the larger villas.

I think that is generally true. We are PIF for our upcoming stay at AoA. We will have 2 "adults" and a 25 yo "child" with us in our suite. There was no extra charge. When I asked our Disney TA about it, she said that the paperwork all states that there is a charge for more than 2 adults in a room, she has not seen it actually charged on suites (we were specifically discussing AoA). Even though that statement is printed on the receipt, it's not reflected in the price of the suite.

We have done both: Rented points and booked with a pin code through WDW and were never charged extra for adult children.

So are you all saying it is definitely per night? I was told that I had to pay the same rate whether DD20 is with us for 1 night or for all 3. It was per reservation not per night. I thought that was odd. Maybe I should call back? She will only be with us for 1 night then will be moving into the college program apartments. Why pay the extra fee if I don't have too. lol

Update: I just called and yep they are charged per night not per ressie. CM gave me wrong info when I booked. I took my DD off and was told to just tell them when we check in that we have one more adult for just one night and I pay the extra adult fee when I check in. Saved me $51.
I would rather have her with us but since she won't be in the room, why pay the extra fee!
BTW this was at Coronado business class room.

As everyone else mentioned, you do pay the extra charge per night for the extra adult, however, if you book a villa, you will not be charged for the extra adult.

OP, I'm in the same boat! Older son is now 18, so we're looking at the extra adult charge, too. Off topic for a minute: Who gave these kids permission to grow up so fast!
