4.33 years is WAY too long between visits!

So, I've been thinking and running prices for what want and down and just thought of something that I have wanted to do but have never actually committed to.

The ideal trip would be around $14,000 not including travel, out of pocket dining costs (tips, kids meals, adult beverages) or souvinears. That is if I happen to not fall into a free dining period and if POR is not excluded from the free dining offer like they have been apparently.

That's a lot of money. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the value in that...it would truely be a vacation. But as always and especially at this tme in our lives, money does play into everything. I want us to have the best time possible and that might mean giving up some things.

For me, I'd rather have the 16 day vacation and no dining or some variation thereof that an 8 night trip wilth all the fringe. So my mind wandered to camping.

Room only for POR is $285.00, a tent site is $107.00 per night.

We have camped before. In a tent. We basically just use the room to sleep in. We don't nap mid day generally. We don't lounge.

I would miss the all in one room (walking to the bathroom in the middle of the nght is not something I look forward to). I am not too concerned about rain because most of our end of fall and winter trips are pretty scarce on rain. I am a bit concerned with cold though. The kids and had one trip, our first long one the Janiary that they began the Deluxe Dining plan where we had hats, gloves, winter coats on and flowers were being covered at the Grand Floridian for frost. But that was just a couple of days and then we were swimmng!

And my other dilema, if we are camping, I need to book soon because I have heard Christmas time at The Fort book up real fast!

And the worst part, there is not a lot of trip reports or info about tent camping at all,let alone in December...

So, what to you think?

I honestly think you'd be better off booking a cabin and then you can bring in groceries and eat some meals in the room. How many nights would you tent camp? Your whole stay? So you'd have to pack a tent and all the trimmings in your luggage?

I'm sure there's some middle ground you can come up with between 14k and tenting it.

Perhaps you can look into renting DVC points? Seriously, your 14k without travel seems like a bit much. I've never spent that much on one trip and that includes buying DVC and having a wedding in Disney.

Ya, it is a lot but it is a long time at Christmas time...it kills me but it is Christmas. The cabins don't make the trip an cheaper (room wise) and I do not want to cook my own food...I can go snacks and things like that but I am not cooking on vacation. So really, the cabins are not going to make sure I get my 16 night vacation...LOL!

Ya, there are lot of variations expecially this far out but I have heard that the campground books up really quickly for that time of the year...so there might be a time issue if that is the route we decide to take.

Unfortunatley that 5th person changes cost a lot limits the options.

We are probably going to drive so packing shouldn't be a problem. There are definately things we would look forward to about camping and things we will miss by not staying in a hotel. But they may negate each other in the long run.

I have to do a bunch of number crunching and see where the best quality for the least money willcome in. It may end up that a shorter trip is just the best option for us at this time but a longer trip would be ideal especially at that time of the year.

I have thougt about renting points but don't know much about it and of course have heard some horror stories about it...maybe that is another option to check into...

I am used to a 14-17 night trip not bing much more that $6000.00 including air but that is just not the reality of my famly anymore so off to research som more I go!

yea, I hear you on value for your money, I just think there's better options than tent camping for 16 nights. Plus, staying at the campground takes up a lot of time if taking the buses. You have to take internal buses and transfer to the boat or the main depot to go to the parks. You won't have a fridge for snacks, or even drawers and stuff. it's not even very convenient to even get to the restaurant at FW, again internal bus

Look into Davids for DVC rentals. There's actual companies, you don't have to rent from a stranger if you don't want to. Also, some of the DVC studios now fit 5 (AKV, VWL,).

Also, think about having teenagers with you, plus a couple of newbies. I'm not sure I'd want to be stuck in a tent with 2 teenagers for so long. Maybe that's just me. You have to remember it's everyone's vacation and as much as you want to go , go, go, some of the party might just want to relax.

So I checked David's site for DVC points and we would need a one bedroom and it is way too much...does not make much difference.

I am really liking the idea of camping. I have discussed it with Cary and he is all for it. Skyler loves the idea...she wants to be near the horses. Tyler and Dylan don't really care...Ty becasue he just wants to get back there and Dylan becasue he's never been and he can't wait to go! He is a bit disappointed about probably not getting his first airplane ride though!

I just wish there was more info around from real people than there is. I know my parents have camped there before a very long time ago but they travel differently than we do.

There are a lot of pluses about camping besides saving money.

1.) no one has to wait for someone else using the bathroom.
2.) no one has to wait for someone else using the shower.
3.) there is a hot tub at the pool (there is not at values that we are used to).
4.) we can decorate for Christmas a bit more.
5.) horses and ponies to check out.
6.) an all new place for us (we've been to most other hotels at least to visit but never to the fort).
7.) boat to Magic Kingdom.
8.) boat to Magic Kingdom to a monorail to Epcot.
9.) easy access to Wilderness Lodge, Contemporary, Poly, and Grand Floridian for meals.
10.) can pack snacks and cooler for drinks at the tent.
11.) there is something about sleeping in a tent that is very soothing.

And I am sure there are many other benefits we will find but I just haven't discovered them yet!

One of the reasons to strive for the longer trip is so we can take our time and relax a bit especially at that time of the year. And if we do this, we will do it either with Quick Service Dining or without a dining plan at all...I have yet to sit down and actually prive all that out. But, that means no dining reservations to make...or at least not a tom of them. So the only thing we might be rushing for is rope drop. :)

The main things I think we will miss about staying in a room are...

1.) mousekeeping.
2.) stuffed animals being placed in scenes around the room by mousekeeping.
3.) food court.
4.) TV (although we would most likely bring some sort of electronic equipment to view DVDs.

But that's about it.

I have a few thoughts to combat my major concerns (cold, rain, and bathrooms).

1.) RAIN - I don't think we'll have to worry much about this but we have camped in the tent in a storm and maybe got a little damp but not wet...plus, it has been when it was very warm and humid out so the dampness was helped along by that. Worse comes to worst, we will just have to be prepared to take a hike to a dryer and dry some things out. We will bring all our clothes in rubbermaid tubs with lids that seal (one for each of us) and that stack for when not in use.

2.) BATHROOMS - I will put together a guys and a girl's caddy with all the shower supplies needed in them (soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs/brushes, hairdirers, make-up, hair products and ponies/barettes, etc) so that all we will have to do is grab the appropriate caddy and our towels (at home we each have our own towel for showers in our own color - Ty is yellow, Skye is pink, Dylan is red, and Cary and I are brown) so grab and go. As far as trips in the middle of the night, the only one who can't go by herself is Skye...she's just to young and too little for that. But, truth be told, my big, tough, football player of a son is a but afraid of the dark so he may wake someone up too. But I will request to be close to the bathroom.

3.) COLD - Well, this is a big one and probably my biggest concern. The boys' rooms are in the basement of the house we rent now. On the floor we have those rubber puzzle pieces...they are soft and insulating. We will bring some of those to layer over the floor of the tent (in red and yellow of course) so that will help keep the cold from the floor from getting in a little plus we won't have to get out of bed onto a cold hard floor. We also have a green fluffy area rug that is being used in the garage that we could bring to add another layer. We will all have air mattresses (probably our big purchase) and heating blankets plus we will borrow a space heater from my dad just in case. We will bring all our winter stuff (hats, gloves, scarves, coats). We will probably have them anyway becasue it will be cold when we are leaving Joliet. And we will make sure to have warm jammies that we can layer if we need to. And I am hoping all of this is just a precaution anyway but I always say it is better to have too much that to need something you don't have.

We really don't do much hotel hanging out and when we do it is at the pool or to go to bed. So I really don't think it will be a problem.

About togetherness, or too much of it...well, the kids are always all over eachother. As different at Tyler and Dylan are (even though they areless than a year apart - they will both be 16 when this trip starts and Ty will turn 17 on it) they are always together when at home. you will never find one in his room and the other in the living room. If one is there, they both are. Skyler doesn't care who she is with as long as she's with someone. I prefer to be with the kids. Cary and Dylan are enjoying the family atmosphere they did not really have before they hooked up with us. Believe it or not, even when at places around here, they don't usually ask to go their own way. They are not your average teenagers...sometimes in good and sometimes in bad ways! I am looking forward to all of us being together without chores, and work, and school, and football, and dance, and TV, and computers, and laundry, and worrying about money, etc...so we can all just relax and maybe enjoy ourselves for real for the first time in the history of out new family. There wouldn't really be much difference if we were crammed into one room at Port Orleans Riverside or into a big tent.

I plan to book the site as soon as I have the cash to do it so I don't miss my chance...that would stink! I will book a room only at this point and possibly add tickets and dining later when I am sure what we want and we have the room/site portion paid for. If we change our minds, then we do. I don't think we will unless we win the lottery (I guess I would have to play for that to happen though!) but it is possible. As of this morning, I could book a tent site still...but I don't want to wait too long as I have heard the fort fills up fast at Christmastime.

I was looking today for flights and even though they aren't out for October 2015, they are out up until the 1st week of September. I'm thinking we will have to fly United/American so that we can go non-stop of O'hare... Right now the prices are about $600 for both RT. that's not so bad. But probably would be for a family your size.

You are better than me... I'm not riding in a car 17 hrs just for WDW nor am I camping. We have to be very frugal, but I am also on vacation and not willing to let those things make me a very cranky girl... lol husband would sleep outside if that happened haha :moped:

Hhhmmm...$600.00 it's coming down! :) I know it used to be (and I don't know if that is a trend that still exists or not) that when SWA first releases fares for a timeframe they offer the best rates. And you used to be able to go on their site and it would tell you when the next group of dates woudl be released. I don't know if other arilines do that or not.

I don't mind a ride. Don't get me wrong, I'd MUCH rather fly bit right now, It has been so long that I'd do just about anything to get there! Plus, we do a lot of driving on a regular basis. We live in Joliet, I work in Bolingbrook (about 15 miles one way), Skye dances on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturdays in Hickory Hills (about 30 miles one way), and Nutcracker is on Saturdays right now in River Forest (about 55 miles away). We do a lot of driving everyday. We have not driven it since Tyler was about 5 and we had to stop in Georgia for my cousin's wedding that Tyler was in. So there is an adventure to be had there! Plus, the boys will be off of school on that Friday and I'll just pull Skye out and we will leave Thursday as soon as they get home from school around 3:30pm...they will be ok for the first part and sleep through the night (especially if I can get me a decent minivan) and then by the time they wake up we will be almost there. The way home might not be as fun though!

And we like to camp in general. If we were people who liked to sit around in our room or partake in what the resort had to offer, The Fort might not be ideal but really, other than the pool, we can always go to a resort and take part in the other offerings. All we're doing is sleeping in the tent mostly, just like we'd be in a room. But believe me an air mattress in a tent is some good sleeping...and if we can get mild temps and very little to no rain, it will be perfect. Quite honestly, I'd rather sacrafice a small bit of luxury for the time we will be able to go for and if everything goes as planned and we don't have any expensive suprises that we have not already planned for pop up, we should be able to save enough money to have spending money which in the end makes for a better trip. We were at the point that we went so often that the kids would come home with left over spending money because they did not want any of the same merchandise they saw the last time they were there. Sonce we have not been in so long and Dylan and Cary have never been, souvinears might be more "necessary". And just having the added knowledge that I can spend money and not regret it later is a good thing.

So in the end I guess it does all come down to money (it always does) but I really don't feel like I am sacraficing anything to save it...just making different choices.

We are staying at Pop, and this is a combo trip for us... honeymoon/vacation. MY S.O. and I have been together for almost 8 yrs so thinking of it as a honeymoon is kind of funny to me. However this will be the first vacation that we have been able to since being together... I have a lot of time planned doing things that neither of us have done; I do not plan on sitting in the hotel room much except to sleep. I have told him this too and he laughs at me, but I'm ok with that. I want to be in Disney as much as I can for those 8 days.

LOL...I wouldn't have a problem with calling it a honeymoon but what I do have a problem with is calling Cary "my boyfriend"...it sound so young...I don't know. I mean he is my boyfriend but it feels weird to say it outloud seeing as we have both been married before and both have kids and we are 40 and 43!!!

That's just it! My kids and I have been there a lot so we know we will not use the room to its fullest cost. If someone has an absolute adversion to camping, we'd reconsider...heck, we still could when it comes down to it...I have been know to almost completely restructure a trip while waiting for it...LOL.

But it seems like the best option for the frugal side of me, the worried about money side of me (that is a new development and I like it), and the wanting to have as much fun as possible side of me!

Cary got the job and started today. It's not a lot but it is something! And he really needed this for more than monetary reasons. Plus, it is hopefully the gateway to a lot of more normal life things...he's been out of work with is injury so long he wasd starting to wonder if he'd ever be given the chance to get back into the work force.

:goodvibes

And I am really actually excited about deciding to camp! At first I was worried but the more I thought about it, the more excited I got...and so is everyone else! Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that the tent sites stay open until i can pull that deposit out and book it!

I am feeling a bit more normal lately than I have in the past three years! See, we have had to make a lot of changes in our life due to me finally getting up the nerve to do something that I had needed to do for a while. We were all unhappy and in turn to comfort ourselves we spent money...shopping, eating out, vacations, etc...there was always a credit card around and while my intentions were always good, something always came up and eventually, even if we handled it correctly for a while, we'd be in a hole and need to be dug out. Somehow, even though I know and understand the correct way to use credit and to save and to function on an everyday basis, the only thing that made us feel good was spending money.

So, when I finally broke it down and decided to be brave and do the right thing (although I know a lot of people don't agree that divorce is the right thing) and tell Lou I wanted a divorce, it came a long with a ton of changes. Not only the physical changes of Lou not living in the same house anymore (although truthfully, he really hadn't for years) and moving into my parents upstairs two bedrooms and a bathroom but also monetary. We had to get used to one income, still had bills to pay off, and Lou not paying child support. We went through a lot of tough issues with my parents as far as adjusting to having their adult child and her children living under their roof again, the three of us struggling to figure out how to work the fact that even as little as Lou was there, he was there to run someone somewhere or to be there for Skye after Ty went to school, etc., to me figuring out how to lead my life again as a single person with kids and my parents dealing with that also. Needless to say, they did not like it and it caused a huge riff between us and we had to move out quite hastily because I felt we were not safe there anymore. So we rented a house and again had to get used to a whole new life...new town, new schools, Ty starting high school, and a new family...because Cary and his two sons moved in with us. One of his sons couldn't deal with the new situation and having rules and having to be accountable for yourself (he was 17 at the time) so he moved back to his grandmother's house. So again we had changes. But in all of this we had to really adjust to going from having everything monetary that we wanted to having nothing. We have no cable, we have no working iPhones, we have no extras. We had to buy clothes at resale shops (which we have come to find we like!) and only buy what we needed not what we wanted. We have visited food pantries at times to suppliment our meals. We have had to ask Catholic Charitities for help paying utilities. And all that was new for us...especially me. I have to say though, I do have a new found appretiation for not judging someone by what you think you know. Because while I never could qualify for public aid because I technically make too much money, the resources I was able to gather were not something I intend to ever use again but I am very grateful they were there when I needed them.

So anyway, back to the good news. Recently, as of about September, Lou has been court ordered to pay child support and I get it like clock work every other week to take care of things his kids need. He still does not appreciate the fact that what he gives them is no where near even half of what it costs them to do what they do but it's a start. And with the event of Cary getting this job, we have more of an income. And we are now able to have two pay as you go cells that have limited talk and unlimited text. We were able to get a Sam's card again finally (it had been about three years). And that may not seem like a lot, but to me it is a line back to normalcy. A normalcy that I have worked towards and now have a much better handle on the way to use credit (which at this point I do not have and don't know if I even want) and how to budget and save. Which brings us to another thing that makes me feel a bit more normal...

I am now officially booked for a vacation!!!!

It's a long way off...420 days to be exact! It was booked room only. It is a completely different kind of trip than we are used to. And it still may need to be modified. But we have a trip booked. We have somewhere to stay.

Last night we booked Fort Wilderness tent site from December 18, 2015 thru January 3, 2016...16 nights! It is real, I have a real trip to muse about...and to save for. Becasue as I said before, we will not charge the vacation...even if I decide and am able to get a credit card prior to going, it will not be used to pay for a vacation. It is a lot to save for but I believe we can do it. There are variables along the way but having something tangible makes it easier to visualize. And it makes me feel like we are on our way back to normal...a new and improved normal but normal just the same!

AWWWW!!!!

Congrats first to Cary for landing a job. Its not easy I know first hand. I moved here in 3/10 while my fiance stayed in Ohio to finish school. My mother had BOTH knee replaced in 9/2010, so because I was already staying with my parents and not working, my life turned into a living Cinderella. I finally landed a job in 7/2011 and moved out in 10/11... My fiance moved here in 3/2013 and landed a job in his field in 7/2013.

Second, CONGRATS on the trip!!! We too have no credit cards and will not apply for one just for the trip. I make a small payment every week out of my check towards our balance and we are hoping for some kind of discount the week we plan on being there.

My fiance is saving out of his checks for spending money, baggage fees, tipping money etc. We will split the cost of airfare. Flying round trip via United right now is around $650 for the both of us if we were flying in September.... Hoping the prices stay the same for October.

It took us much longer than usual but Halloween costumes are figured out!

Tyler is always a clown...although he does want a new costume this year but unless his father suprises him with it tomorrow, it's not happening this year.

Dylan wants to be "Jeff The Killer"...I have no clue...something from an online site or something like that...needs a white hoodie and black dress pants...cheapo store, here we come!

And Skyler, well, we need a backstory here...

She is SOOO not a "I wanna dress up as a fancy princess for Halloween" little girl!
Year 1 was a Vampire Bat (Ty was the Vampire).
Year 2 was a crocodile (Ty was the Crocodile Hunter).
Year 3 was a Devil (and that was about as pretty as she's ever gotten). Year 4 was The Wicked Witch of the West.
Year 5 was a Vampire.
Year 6 was a I can't remember???
Year 7 was a Zombie Baby (bottle of bloody fingers, diaper, and all).
Year 8 was a Zombie School Girl.
Year 9 was a Zombie Brownie (dead box od Girl Scout Cookies and all).
Year 10 was a Mummy (she won for best costume at school).

My mom once bought her a beautiful white Tinkerbell dress from when the movies first came out and said she could be that for Halloween. He response was "No I can't becasue I would hate to get blood all over it!".

And for tha past five years or so Lou and his friends put on a haunted yard and the kids "work" there...Skye has her own following so there's pressure to pruduce. But really, they don't spend much time out there...in fact Saturday night will be the only time they get out there this year. SO, maybe not so much pressure. Plus she's on a "saving for Disney kick right now so I'm gonna run with it while it lasts!

So last night we're looking through the costume box and she finds a red velour robe (it reminds me of the robe that the person in the Indiana Jones part of The Great Movie Ride who warns Indy not to tough the stone wears). Don't know where it came from but she has wanted to incorporate it into her costume for years and it just hasn't worked out. Then she finds Tyler's old Wolfman costume (mask and shirt with furry chest). And we're on Season three on Netflix of Once Upon a Time...see where she's going with this???

So she grabs her Chicken picknick basket she has and there she has it. She's going to wear the mask and shirt under the red robe/cape and carry the basket (that she's hoping to fill with body parts) and be..... RED!

If you didn't get the connection, Little Red Ridinghood from the seried Once Upon a Time...she's actually the wolf...pretty ingenious for looking through a bunch of old things!

Now it does not quite live up to her past but it will be warm for the cold night and it is pretty cool...plus unless I buy her body parts, it's FREE!

I'll post pictures as soon as I get some and am able...I am a bit electronically challenged right now...

See it???

I set up my ticker today...but it messed up my signature...why? I see people with larger signatures that I have but this was the only way I could get it all to show. I don't want to lose my old Trip Reports (even if they are only partially done) or my Dining Reports but I also want my new ticker to count down...

In other news, we have begun to put together our countdown calendar. I printed out four hundred pages of a calendar...one for each day. We have yet to use it but all of us sat around Sunday coloring pictures to put on it. We have most of the sepcial days done...birthdays and holidays along the way...as well as the week or so leading up to the trip. I think I am going to add some trivia to the days also...I am still trying to figure that one out though. See, Tyler is a trivia buff and knows A LOT of Disney Trivia...so I need some challenging questions and some not so challenging (believe it or not Cary and Dylan are not trivia people and especially Disney, the gaul!) and I need to find a way to have the questions there but not the answers because they will figure that out real quick and then be cheating to show how better they are than the other (mainly Tyler and Dylan).

Also, in the interest of our less Disneyfied family members and just because we love it, I want to plan weeklyish theme nights with dinner and a movie and maybe an activity once the new year hits. I figure we can get through a lot of Disney in close to a year's worth of time plus have fun while doing it. The kids like to cook so we can make the whole thing an event. I just have to plan that out.

So luckily I have a long time to do all of that and we should have a good time leading up to our Christmas with the mouse!

Any ideas, please share!

For our last countdown calendar I mixed trivia with other fun things. For example, one day said to 'draw your favorite character' or 'talk like your favorite character'. Other days had the boys naming their favorite ride (or the one they were most looking forward to) or the meal they most wanted. Just some little things that got us talking together.

I've always wanted to do movie nights but haven't gotten to it. I'm interested to see what you come up with!

WOW...I did not realize how much time, effort, and energy it was going to take to coordinate two working adults, dance classes, STEM meetings, and all the other little things in life with just one car!!! Cary used to be at home taking care of things, now, not so much! Which is a great thing, don't get me wrong, I just didn't realize how much it would impact the way we live.

And I have been feeling a bit under the weather...which is typical for me around this time of year but slows me down none-the-less.

The kids are still actively making the countdown calendar...which I wish I could show you guys but I need to get on top of the camera and get down to it. One day we had a question of "Who's your favorite villian?" and I had two Hades (Ty and Dylan) and two Ursulas (Cary and Skye...coulda been me too but I changed mine because I like so many) and one Ezma (me). We also had one day where the question was "What was the name of Jack Skellington's dog?"...everyone got that one right. I figured I'd start relatively easy and progress from there. I really can't do any park related questions because Cary and Dylan don't know much about it...but I might try some casual education thrown in there and then towards the end of the countdown start asking park specific questions.

Skyler has taken it upon herself to collect every stray penny, nickel, dime, whatever to put in out savings jar...she yells at the boys if they walk over a penny on the ground!

I have begun three ways of saving for the trip, in addition to my Credit Union and beginning in January, making payments as if it were a bill. First, the kids get $10.00 every two weeks for allowance. It is given to them in quarters...becasue it's harder to spend that way and becasue every time one of their very few chores is not done how or when it's supposed to be, or for a grade in school less than a B, or for getting in trouble in any way, they have to put a quarter in the jar. Plus, any stray change or monies allowed over what things actually cost (like if I allot $30.00 for laundry and we only use $25, the other $5 goes in the jar). Second and third are both similar. I saw it on the internet and sounded easy enough, at least on the early side. You start with $1.00 and every week you add a dollar...so the second week you put in $2 and the third week you put in $3, and so on...the other one is a quarter but in the same way. By the time we are set to go, we will have a very decent amount of cash to play with...if I can keep it up at the higher end...I should be able to but you just never know what will happen...but any saving is better than no saving.

I am determined to make this happen in the best way possible and having a goal that is fun (I mean bills and things like that are necessary but not fun) makes it easier to not spend every last cent we have...at least so far it has been.

Well, that's all that has been going on in my world, and my head, these past few days...I can't wait until I can really plan!

I take that back...that's not all that's in my head!

Skyler has heard of Disbounding...I think that's what it's called. At 10 (will be 11 when we go) years old she is too cool to dress up like princesses but loves the idea of dressing up in clothes that resemble a character in some way. So we are thinking of easy ways she could do that. So far we have Penelope from Wreck It Ralph ... brown mini skirt and a pale green sweater. Still comtemplating others...any suggestions?

I know it does not sound like much to brag about but we are down to under 400 so that's something, right?
