4/24/2010 Med cruise: Friends, Romans, Countrymen lend me your Ears

...On other cruises my two children have looked at the doors/ magnets / signs and fish extenders with envy so feel the need to join in if possible....

Are you crafty enough to make magnets? have the time? need more?

I have promised people to keep it small & simple - aiming for group(s) of 12 cabins. We now have 12 cabins. I think I will send out PMs to those already on the roll call and see how much further interest there is. Could be 13 cabins total. I won't put you in a group alone. So you are on the list, now.

Website has been acting up lately - keeps telling me to try later. This is an Apple, that's not supposed to happen!

Lynne

Thanks that sounds great to me :thumbsup2 Just so you know we are Cat 12 GTY - can't wait to find out which room we get :cool1:

Hey guys - I am putting your excursion info on the Med Excursion page - maybe if it's in one place, people can get some info now & in the future.

If anyone EVER wants anything removed from the website, let me know. I don't want you to think I'm taking liberties with your personal info!

The website is fab :goodvibes Such a wealth of information, it's brilliant and very helpful - thank you for your hard work :lovestruc

Does anyone know when getting a taxi to from the port can they go to the terminals or do you have to get the bus? Also will there be taxi's waiting when we disembark the ship at the end or is it a good idea to have a phone number?

Not sure on the excusrions yet, we're waiting to hear what someone else is planning.

On formal night there is a variety of "dress up". There are some that go for all the glitz and glamor. Most of us just wear a nice dress or a dressy top with a Long skirt and /or dressy pants. My husband will just wear a suit. Wear what you feel comfortable in.

Is anyone on the the flight from Barcelona to JFK at 11:20? We then go from there to Orlando.

I FINALLY found me a cute black dress. Its nothing formal but it is cocktail type and won't take up much room in my suitcase. Hubby has said only two suitcases. He doesn't know me too well, even after 29 years :rotfl:

We got our cabin assignment on the TA; upgraded from a 12 to an 11 on deck 6 :). Now the wait for this cruise. What are the chances of staying in the same room.:confused3

Okay - another question regarding train service from La Spezia to Pisa. I was looking at the Rail Europe site -- just gathering information and some of the trains have reserved seats while others have "open seating". The FAQ says that open seating means that you have a ticket but not necessarily a seat. Is this like local trains in the US - where you purchase a ticket and then sit wherever you want? Or, does this mean that some folks have reserved seats and others may end up standing? I guess I'm a little confused - I know how different trains run here in the States, but not how it is in Italy. Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

Yea, the site for the trains is not too user friendly. Especially when you click on the fare info and it is in Italian when you were on the english site. All of the information I have here is based on my reasearch for the train to Rome, not to Pisa, but I am sure it is similar. Some trains have reserved seating and cost more. The other trains, which might say n/a right now, are open seating, like a cummuter train. The open seating ones can only be purchased a week out online, but they are much less than the reserved trains (for example, from Civitavecchia to rome, it is 9,00 euros on the reserved train an 4,50 on the open seating one). I have not personally done it myself yet, so all of this is based on what I could fine out so far (most of which was not from the actual train website). If anyone else has anything to add or feel free as I am in no way an expert.

And the site I am referring to is: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html

I don't specifically know about La Spezia, however have been told by friends who frequent Naples that often in Naples it's commuter trains, can be quite crowded at peak times and yes, you can end up standing for the length of the ride.

Not that standing would be a big deal, but for me with little kiddos, and looking at 40 minutes or so on the train I don't feel like being smushed and standing, and definately not at the end of the day, so we are doing DCL for Pompeii.

We are 2 people looking for others to share our tours for more fun and a lower cost. Here is the itinerary

You might want to contact Lynne (auntlynne) - she is maintaining the FE list. She also has a website which is filled with awesome information :thumbsup2 Here's a link to her page: http://web.me.com/lyncorn/Site/Welcome.html Enjoy!

We use Net10 phones because we have very low cellphone usage but since Net10 phones will not work overseas, we need to make other arrangements to make calls home. Rather than buying an unlocked GSM phone and a SIM card for Europe, we are thinking of using Skype and the onboard internet access. In that way, we can also make video calls.

Does anyone have experience with using Skype with Disney's onboard internet service? How well does it work?

Thanks

Okay it has been a week since I got off the Wonder and today I booked the 4/24/2010 Med so I will be joining all of you! I had it planned for August be due to a family wedding we couldn't all go. So now my mom and I will be going in April. This will my 12th DCL!

I am so excited

I don't think Skype works, unfortunately. I haven't personally tried but I've read that it does't work in general on cruise lines.

While I've never tried on Disney, I have used Skype on Princess ships. However, it was always spotty at best. It really only worked during low internet usage times.

That is my fear. Obvously we will have to use our netbook with Skype since we can't download any programs to the Disney PCs. I'm afraid bandwidth might be the big issue.

Welcome!

Here's some info for you:

1. Julie (skoi) is in charge, but she is getting ready to go to Morocco next week. We don't really require a lot of "leading," since we are such a port-intensive cruise and many of us don't expect to have much time for group activities.

2. That said, we are doing FE and are currently signing up. The plan is to have groups of about 12 cabins each. You would then be responsible to give one gift to each of the 11 other cabins in your group. Keep in mind the luggage restrictions for return and keep gifts less bulky or heavy, please.

3. I've got lanyards on order already - there's enough for everyone to get one - no cost to you. The lanyard itself is black with white letters "A Cruise of Magical Proportions" Here's the name tag:

0001xv-2.jpg

4. We will be doing a meet and greet - the current thought is 3:00 in the Promenade Lounge before the Life Boat Drill. That will give us time to make initial introductions - and hand out lanyards.

Now, we can use some info from you (especially helpful for FEs and name tags):

Real first names

...We are in the middle of sharing excursion plans to get ideas of what to see in the ports (other than DCL-offered excursions) and possible link-ups to make tours more affordable.
