4/24/2010 Med cruise: Friends, Romans, Countrymen lend me your Ears

Originally posted by Leesh77: know I don't post much, but I have been reading everything...and now I have questions.

Fish extenders...do I have to make one? Is ebay the only place you can buy them? How many gifts do you give? One per day?
No, you don't have to make a FE - I've seen some people hang a small canvas bag off their fish, others hung a Christmas stocking at that time of the year - the possibilities are endless - a little creativity and imagination and you can hang just about anything with a pocket (or some sort of opening so that someone could put your giftie inside :goodvibes) I think the group has decided one gift per cabin - can be given/delivered anytime during the cruise :thumbsup2

Going Ashore...how long after the boat goes ashore (the times they provide) are you actually off the boat? Why is it the some shore excursions start before the ashore time listed?
Like Venny said, some excursions meet before the ship is cleared so that as soon as it's cleared - your group can depart for their excursion.

Palo - what are my chances that I get a reservation on the boat?
For Palo reservations, go directly to Rockin' Bar D - I think they start taking ressies around noon or 1pm - someone else can confirm this?

OK. I think that is all. I saved all of them up! ( Aside from my dress code question.) LOL. Hit me with the answers! I know you guys have them!

I feel like I am the only one who has never been on a DCL cruise before, am I?:)

Thanks again for your help!
Leesh

Does anyone know what the movies are during the Med cruise?popcorn::
We won't know exactly which movies are playing during our cruise until about 2 weeks prior to embarkation, but as of the 2/27 cruise the following movies were being shown:

  • Race to Witch Mountain
  • Earth
  • Up (3d)
  • G-Force
  • Surrogates
  • Toy Story 1 & 2 (3d)
  • Christmas Carol (3d)
  • Old Dogs
  • The Princess and the Frog
  • When in Rome

I know I don't post much, but I have been reading everything...and now I have questions.

FE - Do you have to make one? Yes/No.

If you want to participate in the Fish Extender Gift Exchange, it is a lot easier for others to leave your gift in the FE without having to find the room steward and have them leave it in your room. This allows them to get distribution done quickly.

You don't have to participate in the FE exchange - in that case, you wouldn't need one.

The FE doesn't have to conform to the standard hanging row of pockets - somebody thought of this years ago and it has become the typical collection receptacle. You can be creative and hanging anything from the FE - just remember the width restriction of 10" for that strip of wall. You could just secure a canvas shopping bag to your FE.

FE Gifts - One per cabin is what we are saying is the minimum (and perhaps the maximum - we're trying to keep the size/bulk/weight of the gifts to a reasonable amount for airline luggage restrictions. If you buy one gift for each of the other 11 (or less) cabins in your group, in theory the gifts you receive in exchange should take up about the same amount of space. If anyone goes crazy with lots of extra gifts, someone will have a bulky suitcase - unless the gifts are something that will get used up / consumed during the cruise. So - no, not one gift per day. One gift per cabin in your group. As long as everyone doesn't go crazy and give their gifts on the same day, you would be receiving gifts nearly every day.

I always think it's funny to finish a reply, only to have it post and find someone else has been replying at the same time with basically the same answer. At least we are giving similar answers - we're either confused or correct - but we're in it together. :thumbsup2

You can count on NC_Tink to answer and welcome people - a big Thank You.

And, Lynne - I want to thank you!!! You're always full of knowlege and so sooooo helpful!! I've been out to your website many times this week to gather info!

Okay, update on tours! The tours I put together for Naples and Villefranche are full (8 people each) but...

I've been agonizing over my decision to go to Portofino on the La Spezia day. While I really, really want to see Portofino, I think I'll regret not going to Florence.

So...after much research, decided to form another private tour.

Here is the description:

"The world's most important works of art are located in Italy and approximately half of these are in Florence. The cultural and historical impact of Florence is overwhelming, and its cultural heritage is unique. The tour begins at the square of Michelangelo, that offers a breathtaking panoramical view on the city. After a quick drive down into the historical center, you will stop by the Santa Croce Church, where all the most important italian artists are buried: (Michelangelo, Galilei, ecc). The drive around the city continues with a visit the Duomo, Giotto's Bell Tower, the Signoria Palace and the Square, The Old Bridge and Pitti Palace.
There is naturally time for lunch, and a visit to the most important museums of Florence, the "Accademia" with the original statue of David by Michelangelo, and the "Uffizi Gallery" with the world masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and all other best artists of the Renaissance.
Your driver/guide will pick you up from the port in the morning and will take you back to the dock in the afternoon"

This tour usually also includes Pisa but I think we are skipping it, to spend more time in Florence.

There are at least 4 of us now, possibly 6, and I'd like 8...so if you are a part of 2-4 and are interested, PM me!

Prices:

All rates are quoted in Euro funds. Payment in Euro, traveller's cheques. Price includes driver guide for all the tour.
Price does not include lunch, gratuites nor entrance fees.
Rates per vehicle for a full day Tour (9 hrs) are as follows:<

- Mercedes A/C Minivan up to 6 people:
Euro: 650
- Mercedes A/C Minibus up to 8 people:
Euro: 700

This is a Romeinlimo tour. Erin

Ok...now my creative mind is churning with all this FE info.
One more question...are the doors magnetic?:banana::banana:

(I seriously love those bananas!)

Read through all the threads looking for ideas and think ive got it about planned now for each port

Malta - Blue grotto & fishing village - DCL
Tunis - Carthage & sidi Bou Said - DCL
Naples - Pompeii DIY by train
Rome - cant decide whether to do Classic rome DCL or DIY by train
La Spezia - Pisa DIY by train
Ajjacio - DIY - little train & beach DIY
Vilefranche - monaco - Little train - Aquarium - DIY by train

Was thinking about private tours but too long a day in each port - want a bit of relaxation.

Have ordered fish extender from EBAY - not got the skills to DIY. Kids are all excited about exchange. What kind of gifts have people exchanged before? First time so ideas gratefully received

Okay I haven't made it through all the pages of the thread yet, slowly making my way through.

Did I miss the link to Lynne's website?

The doors are not magnetic - but they are metal and magnets will stick to the door :thumbsup2

You can link to Auntlynne's website here: http://web.me.com/lyncorn/Site/Welcome.html Also, she includes a link on all of her posts :thumbsup2

Lubi, I saw on the other thread that you're with DU as well. Do you mind me asking who your agent is? We're getting a little frustrated with our agent now. It always takes AT LEAST 36 hours before she answers any emails sometimes up to 1 week. We're pretty laid back people. Tried to let John know for future reference but he just says he's surprised at our comments and offered to transfer our reservation to DCL. We've got Kelsie and every one seems to rave on about her. Maybe the questions that we're asking are too hard...

Hey Belinda - we have Marla Hellwig as our TA from DU. She's been great - I think I've waited, at most, 24 hours for a response - maybe 26 ;) but that was for things that didn't need an immediate response. :thumbsup2

I had to think about this for a second. LOL. I guess for a door to be magnetic...that could get pretty dangerous. LOL "Watch your valuables!!!":rotfl2:
I should have asked if the doors were metal. ahahahaha. "Hey, where is all my spare change?" :rotfl: Too funny!!

:lmao::rotfl::lmao: Too funny!! Can you imagine - belt buckles? Being stuck to the door?? :rotfl2::rotfl2: Okay - need to get the images of walking down the hall, past all these people stuck to the doors, out of my head :rotfl2:

Hmmm you are so right, we can't afford any tissues........
i will save them for the cruise because there are tissues and i paid for them so you bet i'm going to use them....

I can imagine you with a bag full of H2O products too :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

FE Gift Ideas: These are from posts on the DISboards:

Adult suggestions:
Playing cards, hi-light pen, emery boards, sun tan lotion, 'emergency' bags with bandaids, safety pins etc, travel sew kit, luggage tags, single use 'Tide' detergent, postcards from your home area, wine charms, post it notepads, picture frames, lip balm.

Wife found some crossword and word search books today that might be ok..I also told her that some travel size hand sanitizers might also be ok

I bought those skin so soft bug repellant individual packs and put one of those in each of the adult bags, with lip balm, bubble bath, tissues, etc...

__________

We are not talking about big, expensive gifts. And you can try buying something in Europe (chocolate is usually a good gift - although some people don't like it :rotfl: - they can share with others, then).

Small change...I believe we ARE going to see the Leaning Tower, just not the Duomo or Baptistry in Pisa...we want to spend as much time as possible in Florence but are going to "swing by" the Tower:)

Welcome to all the new cruisers!

:dance3::dance3:

I decided it's safer to just say that than risk missing anyone.

Also- I really do apologize for not keeping up with the list. Just send me via pm, or in the thread what you want me to post for you.

Last- for fish extenders, what do you think, something from Morocco or Philadelphia? Since we're sure it's going to be 12 total, I can just look around the souks for something small and interesting.

Really last: still have room on or Amalfi trip without Pompeii for up to three people.

Julie
(in one week, we'll be on our way to Morocco!)
