My DD is 3 1/2 years old and I was wondering what your opinions are on taking her on Kali River Rapids? She is 41" tall (minimum for Kali is 40"). She can swim, and loves the water (swims underwater and everything). She's also kind of a daredevil (wants to do EVERYTHING her big brother (6yo) does). However, I've never been on Kali and am concerned about water coming down hard on her, like being under a waterfall, or hitting her hard in the face, etc. She saw a picture of the ride in a book and is insisting that she go on it. Those of you who've been on Kali, what are your thoughts??

I took my son on Kali when he was the same age as your daughter. He liked it until one part where he was completely doused with water (only one person in the raft got wet and it was HIM...poor baby!). He cried a bit, but he recovered quickly. He certainly wasn't traumatized, although I don't think he cared to go on it again. Since the raft is free-floating, there is no way to tell who is going to get soaked. I was hardly wet at all.

I think it would be okay to take your daughter on it since she is showing interest. From what you described of her personality, I think the worst that could happen is that she wouldn't want to go on it again if she doesn't like being drenched. I don't think it would be too rough on her.

we took my ds on this when he was 3 and he freaked!!!! when the water falls are all on EVERYBODY gets soaked. the ride is fine until the end when you pass under the falls. i would ask if all the falls are on and look at the people comming off to see how wet they are. while you are waiting to go on the people comming off are passing right by you going the other way so you can usually judge by looking at them. it is a cold shock when you get wet. one piece of advice i have is bring a towel and a change of clothes that day because my ds was cranky for the rest of they day because he was so wet! :flower:

Our boat got hung under the falls once, for about 10 seconds, but it was a looong 10 seconds for my 4yo. He couldn't breathe and began to panic. I had to get out of my seatbelt and stand over him to deflect the water so he could catch his breath. He was not willing to go back on teh river rapids for a long time after that.

It really depends on the child. My older son was 3 when he first went on it, and loved it! My younger son went this year at 3 and cried and cried the whole way through. My older son thinks getting wet is funny. My younger son thinks it is sad, we learned the hard way!

But the ride itself is very tame.

If you decide to let him ride, be sure that you have a complete change of clothes for him to change into afterwards. My sister's boy got really wet one year when they were younger and had to walk wet to the exit and got blisters on thier feet and chafed skin where their clothes rubbed.

My daughter was 3.5 in May when we went to AK and it was one of her favorite rides. They gave her a special arm band when she entered the line and they put her in a special seat with a child belt for safety. She loved the spraying water and getting wet. Of course she is a a little fish when it comes to water anyway!

Definitely bring a change of clothes! But I think she will like it! My DD5 has ridden it several times over the last year or so, and she loves it, getting soaked and all!

Last time we were on it, it broke down and we had to climb off of it. That was a bit scary, and slippery, as we had to climb raft to raft and then up the side of the rock wall of the ride. Thankfully someone helped me with her, or there is no way I could have lifted her raft to raft without falling. One of the CMs actually did fall. But she still loves it. :D

It sounds likeyour DD will like it. Prepare her by telling her she might get wet. Also, bring a change of clothes in case she does get wet. My DS was just 3 when he went on it and he was a little scared. Then again he was not asking to go on like your DD is. I think she will love it.

My 3 1/2 yr old son loved it!! The only thing I would advise if you are taking a bag into the park is to bring along an extra set of dry clothes. I always carry some anyway, but he was very happy to put on some dry jeans!!

Don't forget socks and shoes!! Nothing is worse than soggy feet!

Do they ley you ride barefoot or do you need to change into flip flops for the ride to keep for shoes dry?

If you're going in the summer, just have her wear her swimsuit and water shoes on the ride. She can change back into her regular clothes after the ride and you can put the swimsuit and shoes in a big ziplock bag.

They no longer allow you to remove your shoes on the ride.

I guess we'll need to change into water shoes first so we don't end up with soggy tennis shoes!

We wear Teva sandals to AK when it's warm. They dry very quickly.

We'll be there later this week. I am not sure if it will be warm enough for sandals all day. Forcast is high's in the upper 60's.

Someone mentioned asking whether the water falls will be on or not. Do they make the ride less wet when it is cold? We are planning to wear ponchos, but I really don't want to get totally poured on if you know what I mean!

the waterfalls are the only part that really gets you wet besides a few splashes so if they are not on you really dont have to worry. sometimes in cold weather they keep them off. if they are on a poncho will help but you will still be drenched!! :cool1:

I didn't ride, but the rest of my family did in Dec when it was cool out. The day they rode it was in the upper 60s and none of them came out drenched. They had some wet pants and shoes- except my three yr old DS who I changed as soon as he got off. I just asked my 12yr old dd and she says she doesn't think they were on.

This is great news!! I didn't know they turned off the waterfalls. I was nervous about getting drenched even with the ponchos!

Waterfalls? The thing that gets you wet is the drop after the burned out forest. The people who go down backwards get soaked by the wave of water that comes over the top of the seats. We rode in December when it was in the low 70's and my DH and DD both got soaked. We rode Kali as the last ride of the day and dripped back to the car.
