Hey DISers :)
I've never really been one of those people who HAD to have this 3D ultrasound...but then, I thought, because my baby is at high risk for a chromosonal defect, it might be a good idea. Then, the doctor told me it's more for the 'fun' of a photograph than for pinpointing issues as they usually aren't liscensed doctors, just sonographers snapping pictures.
Well, my mom is coming out in 2 weeks, and she lives across the country... She's never been able to be there during the birth of, or even with me before or after pregnancy. I thought it'd be awesome to schedule a 3D ultrasound while she's here so she can see the ultrasound of her 4th grandbaby.

Then, I went online to look at some of these pictures, and here's my concern. I don't want to sound shallow or rude, but what if my babies defect is very noticeable in the face? What if I see something that Im not prepared for and my mom is there with me? WE'll both break down together, but I don't know if doing this ultrasound is now the smartest thing...although I'd really like to have the experience with her. Those pictures (particularly 4D) are just so amazingly detailed and 'real'..

Just some ideas of whether you felt 3D was worth it...and has anyone had one who's baby had been diagnosed with a defect?

*note - I have my amnio on Wed, so I should have my results back by the 3D date to know exactly what is wrong....

I'm sorry for your worries...I imagine that must be agonizing to have to wait and not know.
I hope the amnio will bring you good news.

As far as having the 3D w/your mom there, I think I would do it. It's your baby and you are going to fall in love no matter what you see. Since the amnio results will be back by then, you should know more what to expect. I think that for myself, even if the news wasn't good, I would still want to have the u/s and have my mother there with me.

Good luck and prayers for you & your baby. I hope everything turns out alright. ((hugs))

Yanno, you're right...I've accepted this...it's all a matter of acceptance.
Thanks :)

If your baby has Down syndrome, I doubt very much that you will be able to see it, especially at that age.

Even with a newborn baby, where the features will be more formed than on your baby, it is often hard to tell just looking at the baby. Doctors often have to look at many things before they make a determination and you really can't know 100% until you have the chromosomes in hand.

I highly doubt you will see anything but the most perfect baby on that screen. And it will help you. If you get a positive diagnosis (remember you still have an 87% chance it is not Down syndrome), seeing the baby will put the focus back on the fact that this is a baby first who just happens to have Down syndrome.

One of the hardest things with a prenatal diagnosis is knowing, but not having that baby to hold and love. The diagnosis takes over since the baby is not there yet.

Go and enjoy your baby. You are just going to fall in love with him or her!

Here are some newborn pics of newborns - much older than your baby will be, so the features are even more pronounced. I know what I am looking for and on a couple of these, I had to do a double take. I highly doubt that a new mother would see anything but the most perfect baby on the machine.

Goofy...thank you..you've been a big 'upside' to me during this.... I know in babies I've seen with DS it's hard to tell...I was just looking thru some of the pics.. and I had a 'scary' feeling what if my baby is totally obvious during this and I'm unprepared for it... but...I'll have my amnio results back by then, so there should be no surprises...

At this point in your pregnancy I don't know if it is worth it. Developementally you are still rather early- The 3D closer to my due date was the one that really looked like him. Early on - hard to tell.
Personally I would hold off and wait to do it later. Have you received any results yet?

I'll be 18 weeks...but my mom is only here for 5 days..and the only reason I'd do it is to have her here... I dont have any regular ultrasounds scheduled during her visit :(

And..no news yet....last visit was a good heartbeat :) TY Java for keeping up with me :)

I have to disagree. I had a regular ultrasound at 13 weeks and still have the pictures, of course, and even in those, you can easily see distinct features of my DD. One caught her profile, and when you look at her profile now, it is still unmistakable that that ultrasound picture is her.

Well yes you get an idea- but if you are paying out of pocket for the 3-D I was just suggesting later on because you get a better picture.

Wanna see 3d ultrasounds? Mine are from very late in the pregnancy (Ds#1 was 32 wks ds#2 was at 26 wks) Your baby will be MUCH smaller but still very much a baby

I assume by your posting that you will definitely be having your baby even if there is something wrong. My daughter was scheduled for an amnio prior to her daughter's birth. When she went for the procedure, they gave her the odds of something happening to the baby because of the procedure. She knew that no matter what, she wanted to have the baby, so she decided against the amni. She ad her daugher several months later and she was absolutely normal. She was so glad that she decided against the test and taking a chance on something happening to her daughter.
