38th Annual DIS Cranberry Sauce Debate Thread

Homemade. I'm the only one who eats it.

I just boil in some fresh squeezed OJ, some salt, some cinnamon and leave it chunky. Love it SO much!!

Mom makes homemade cranberry relish, she grinds up the berries and I don't know what else is in it.

I love cranberry everything.

Always homemade - I always use extra fruits - whichever floats my boat ever year - and I make mine very tart, so I go under the sweetener level recommended. My family LOVES the homemade sauce, so much that I am now never allowed to skip it.

Since it does not occupy the "sweet" at our dinner, but the "sour", I've now started rotating either a pumpkin or sweet potato dish in to fill in as "the sweet"...

This year, I have pear nectar to use for some of the planned water, so I'll be using pears and/or apples as my combo with the pear nectar and plenty of crans...
I don't like it sweet, either. No sugar added, outside of whatever is in the OJ!

I greatly prefer homemade using a family recipe with fresh cranberries, oranges, walnuts and some added sugar. It’s a special treat that we only eat once a year on Thanksgiving. Yum.

I don’t mind canned; we often eat that with poultry the rest of the year. I prefer the kind with whole berries, while DH loves the gel, LOL. Occasionally we also have lingonberry jam (bought at Ikea), which is a good alternative, similar to cranberry but a bit sweeter.

38th Annual DIS Cranberry Sauce Debate Thread

Hey Red, the DIS only goes back about 23 years or so, where were the first 15 debates held?

Not really a cranberry sauce fan. I have sometimes made a salad with whole cranberries and mandarin oranges.

the thought of eating that canned jellied stuff makes my stomach ill.

We love cranberry sauce and will eat the canned stuff occasionally throughout the year. I buy a ton of fresh cranberries when they become available. We've had homemade cranberry applesauce four times already this year and I'll be making it on Thanksgiving too. I need to buy more bags and load up the freezer as much as possible before the season is over.

Now for the controversy. I will serve sliced oranges next to cranberry sauce if I serve the jellied kind sliced, but I HATE orange IN cranberry sauce.

Living in "cranberry country" here in s.e. Massachusetts, I guess I'll weigh in. I can't drive 2 miles in any direction from my house without seeing a cranberry bog. However, I'm not a big fan. I'll have some canned jellied on Thanksgiving and Christmas, but that's it. DW won't touch it.
