Marie or Maria are very popular middle names. It’s a christian thing. ( holy maria). Also many names that are double use Marie/ Maria. Ex Eva- Maria. Anna-Marie.

I went to Catholic schools my whole life. I know countless Marias, Maries, and Marys. (Just this weekend I was at a get together with some old school friends and was hanging out with a Mary Catherine and a Katherine Marie.)

My daughter has a very uncommon but not unheard-of name. I was out once and heard a woman call her daughter by that name. i said, "Oh, her name is _____?" The woman proudly responded "We like unusual names in our family. I know she'll never meet another ________."

I decided not to tell her that that was my daughter's name as well.

I had this same thing happen in the grocery store with younger DD. Turns out this girl was the same age, went to the same school and they ended up in the same class in 5th grade. I never imagined she’d be Name “R” in school.
Haven’t heard it since but I wouldn’t be surprised to since it’s a combo of two names.

The only two truly unique names I’ve ever come across were my paternal grandmother and my maternal great aunt. I know my grandfather had a couple of friends name their daughters after grandma. She absolutely hated her name and forbade my sister and I to use it with our daughters. (Though we both sometimes wish we had. We both named out first daughter with the same first initial.) I have done extensive searches on both names and have only come across three instances of my grandma’s name (none actually her) and none for my great aunt. Neither of these ladies have any kind of digital footprint though so it’s likely there are/were others that do have those names I’ve just never come across them.

Just like many others - Italian Catholic, so I know dozens of girls with Marie / Maria / Mary as their middle name. Easily one of the most common girl's middle names in the country.

This makes me laugh. My grandmother, mother and I all have the same middle name, Elizabeth.

Sounds like my family. My mother's first name was Elizabeth. My middle name, my daughter's middle name and now her daughter's middle names are all Elizabeth.

LOL, I just realized that my mother and 2 of her sisters have the first name Mary. They each go by their middle names which is why I didn't even think of it. I have a large Catholic family and I'm pretty sure my cousins and/or their kids have "Mary's" in their names somewhere too.

Marie has to be one of the most common middle names out there. It's my daughter's middle name and the middle name of one of her cousins as well. We named after a family member. They did, too, but BIL and family are also Catholic, making their name choice even more common. This is all much ado about nothing.

Asking here because I’ll get the most honest answers. My brother In law’s wife gave birth to a girl. Her name is girl marie. Now my daughter is also girl marie. My kid is named for my mom. I have no idea who her kid is named for.
Is she in the wrong? I know it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme but it’s not something i would have done.

Presumably naming your child after your mom was meaningful to you. You have no idea whether or not your niece's name is particularly meaningful to her parents for whatever reason they might have, yet you feel entitled to be proprietary and somehow wronged because you have staked your claim first and therefore whatever is meaningful to them should now take a backseat for reasons that only make sense in your own mind?

Fully expected this attitude to emerge from a mom in that cottonwool fog of new mommyhood where some moms believe their little precious baby is the be all and end all. Period. Never heard of this lasting until the baby is almost nine years old.

Did I read correctly, that your daughter and this niece are nine years apart in age? And this is their middle name you are working about? No, no stealing... probably not a blip on anyone's radar at all.

I have two great aunts, sisters... One is Mary Catherine and the other is Catherine Mary. We always called one "Aunt Toot" and the other "Aunt Ella." No idea why, and I was an adult before I realized they had the same names, only reversed. My sister has 2 friends who are sisters... one named Michelle, the other named Shelly. I think there are worse things to consider than two cousins having the same middle name!

I had to reread it several times too, I thought “Girl” was a really unusual for a first name and was very surprised that the SIL also chose to name her daughter “Girl” lol

As to the actual question, no, I don’t even remotely think it was copying or stealing that they also happened to use one of top 10 most popular middle names for their daughter’s middle name too. If hey are Catholic or Christian, I would say that name moves up probably to the number one most popular spot for middle names lol. I know a Catholic family who even named all their own daughters some variation of Mary: Mary Kate, Mary Elizabeth, Mary Clare, and so on. In our Catholic family it’s Michael/Michelle (an archangel): I have an uncle and a brother named Michael, my middle name is Michelle, as is my daughter’s and my cousin’s

Funny aside.

My SIL and I have the same first name, albeit in my opinion I come by it more naturally as she has a full name that is vastly different from the name we both use, and my full name is just the slightly longer version of the shortened name "Ally".

Her eldest daughter and her mother both share a name, and they were trying to convince me and DH to ALSO name our daughter the same, or some other family name. We weren't having any of it. It is 100% fine if you want everyone in the family to share names, but don't push that agenda on me!

Although, it is funny when people ask where we got our daughters name and I have to begin the conversation with "Have you ever seen the movie Hocus Pocus?"

I know a Carol Cook (married now, so last name is different.) Some friends of their family, also last name Cook, wanted to name their DD Carol, figuring that they lived in different states, so the chances of the two Carols crossing paths would be very rare. The first Cook family was fine with it. Fast forward a few years -- both girls ended up in the same classroom in elementary school. oops.

I am named after the Ivy character in the movie "For the Love of Ivy". Of course growing up no one knew the movie so most people just think I'm named after the plant.

Steal your child’s name? It’s their middle name and honestly it’s probably one of the most common middle names there are. Right up there with Rose or Ann. It’s not a completely unique name that you never hear. You named it for a relative. Maybe they just liked the name. Why do they need a reason? It’s a silly thing to get worked up over.
