In the wrong no? May it seem a bit odd, yes.

Marie is a fairly common name, although probably not as common in 2019 as in say 1950. Are you sure that in addition to your mother, you SIL does not have some personal reason for liking the name? How close are you to your brother and SIL, for example do you see them frequently or do you spend time together outside of holiday gatherings?

I agree it does seem strange for your mother to have two grandchildren with the same name that also happens to be her name. However, I am not really a believer that because you used the name first it should be completely off limits to them.

It happens. But if she really likes the name, I don't see it as a problem. Hopefully the two cousins have different last names.

Asking here because I’ll get the most honest answers. My brother In law’s wife gave birth to a girl. Her name is girl marie. Now my daughter is also girl marie. My kid is named for my mom. I have no idea who her kid is named for.
Is she in the wrong? I know it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme but it’s not something i would have done.

I say she did nothing wrong!

Steal?! Seriously?!

We see each other enough. As i said, I have no idea where she got the name from. We asked but they didn’t answer. It’s just a middle name so it probably won’t come up but I still find it strange.

My guess is the most folks on here will say that nobody "owns" a name. But I totally understand how the situation you describe would be annoying, especially since you now have first cousins with the same it. It's confusing!

We purposely named one of our children a very unusual name - I literally had never encountered one living person with that name before in my entire life (it's an old name that was used fairly widely in the 1800s but is not used today). I have to admit I was a bit irked when a friend of mine chose the exact same name for her son who is about 9 months younger than my son. My guess is that my son and this other child are the only two children in the entire state with this name, and it honestly bothers me a bit. Yes - I understand I do not own that name and she had every right to name her child that, but it's clear we wanted his name to be unique.

Middle name. Not first.
Wait, they share the same MIDDLE name? So one cousin is "Jane Marie" and the other is "Sue Marie"?

MUCH ado about nothing. If you have no idea why they used the name "Marie", then you can't accuse them of "stealing" it. Maybe YOU stole the name from her. She had planned to name her child "Marie" for decades, but you had a child first and took the name. She's just reclaiming it.

But, it's the middle name. I don't see an issue at all.

No. She’s just born my kid is almost 9. And she never once said that she had that name picked for her kids. Whatever this is kind of what I expectedly on here
