So me and my family are going to DLR on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week, my parents live down there and have annual passes and bought us the 3 day so. cal summer pass. and i was reading on the DLR website that if we buy those passes any of the days we are there we can upgrade to a annual pass for just $35. i was wondering if anybody had done this yet, and what type of annual pass it is, like which dates are blacked out, also is it only good till the end of this year or is it good till this time next year???

The pass would be a Southern California Select which is blacked out all Saturdays and Sundays and most of the summer and other peak times. You can see a complete list at Disneyland.com

The pass would be good for one year from the first day you use the 3 day pass.

Maybe someone else can verify that you can upgrade this pass on any of the three days you use it. You probably can, I'm just not sure and wouldn't want to mislead you. You can also call Disneyland. They are very knowledgeable about these things.

yeah, it says right on the website you can upgrade any of the days you are there, i just wondered why they are practically giving it away. and if anybody has done it yet, either way i will be there on Tuesday to find out for my self.

Since your parents bought you the tickets, and you don't live in So Cal, I don't think you can get that particular So Cal upgrade. When you get an AP, you have to show your ID for proof. I think the only APs you can get are the Deluxes and Premiums.

Someone else may correct if I'm wrong.

i do have a so cal id. i just moved away for college but still have my id.

If your permanent address is with your parents, as I assume it is b/c you are simply living elsewhere during school, I think you would qualify. I can't use my own college experience as an example (my mom moved from CA to FL the week after taking me to WA for college, so I lost "home" entirely), but my brother was still a resident of FL when he went off to NC for college, and would have qualified for WDW's FL resident seasonal passes during that time.

And it would likely be the lowest so cal AP out there, which has MANY blockout dates.

It doesn't matter who bought the tickets, by the way; they can tell how much was paid for them, and they just do the upgrade based on that. So no worries about that!

Check out the blockout dates; make sure you're not planning to go on a blockout date *after* you do the upgrade. If you upgrade then want to go on a blockout date, you'll either have to change your plans, pay $40 for a blockout ticket, or just upgrade your AP to a level that allows you to enter on that date. So be careful with that!

That said, if there's just one blockout date you plan to visit, you can upgrade ON that blocked out day, and they allow you to stay and hop. Any future blockout dates, however, you'd need to do something from the above paragraph.

I will say...if you think you might post about the so cal AP you'll get, I would *highly* recommend changing your location to show that you're just in Chico for school, but you are a so cal resident. Just to save possible unpleasantness or extra explanations. :)

Like PP said, that particular AP has a lot of blockout days so you might want to look at the blockout days calendar on the DL website to see if it would work for you. Also, it isn't any sort of sale price, it's just that $35 is paying the difference from the $99 you paid for the summer pass and the cost of the cheapest AP. You could also upgrade to one of the other APs if you wanted less blockout days.

I would think you would want to upgrade on your last day so that you had a few extra days on your AP. The AP is good for a year from the date it is activated.

Have a great trip!

Our APs had the expiration month/day of the day we first used our tickets, FWIW. First use Sept 18, upgraded to AP on the 20th, expiration date Sept 18 following year.

It could be different with the special summer pass, though.

I have often thought about upgrading, but I think I would just go for the Premium AP. I say go big or go home.

Um.

Summer Fun Pass = $99
SoCal Select Annual Passport = $134

$134 - $99 = $35

There's no "giving it away". You are still paying full price for the SoCal Select.

Yes, you're right. That does make more sense that the AP date would be the first day you used your ticket. Sorry for the confusion!

Your Annual Passport will be backdated to the first day you used the Summer Fun Pass you upgraded from, just like a regular ticket.

:goodvibes Man, would'nt that be nice? However, it's too easy for us to plan our trips around the Deluxe blockout dates, so there's no point at this time to get Premiums...I still try to justify it, though!

I think it's b/c CC's parents bought the pass, and $35 from his/her pocket feels like giving it away for an AP. :)

I say do it but wait until the last day you go. The 3 day pass is good for the most days when the So Cal. AP is not. This way you can take advantage of going 3 days in the summer and then get the rest of the year (from your first date used) for only $35 more, which is less than a one day ticket. Makes complete sense to me, esp. since you can show ID for Californa.

And for those who don't know, the 3 day summer pass is good for 3 visitis, first visit must be by Aug. 23rd, and you have 45 days from first visit to use.

The So Cal Select AP are blocked out until Aug. 17th.
The So Cal AP is blocked out until Aug. 16th (Sunday)

It would cost you $35 for the SC Select, or only $75 for the So Cal. one. This allows you to go on Sundays, where the SC Select is blocked out on weekends.

Have a great time no matter what you decide. :goodvibes

i said they are practically giving it away because we are still going and already paid for the 3 day pass anyways, so if i dont upgrade to AP i got a great deal on a 3 day pass and if i do upgrade its like they practically gave it to me since i would get it on the 3rd day and it would only be $35. so basically it IS only $35 bucks because we are already going for 3 day anyways.

Also just to clear it up. if i do upgrade it is to the So. Cal. select? either way i will update you when i get there with the exact details.

They are not practically giving it away.

You are paying $99 for 3 days. (I would say they are practically giving away THIS pass, to be honest, as it is a GREAT deal.)

You are then paying the difference between the So Cal Select AP and what you have already paid to get the AP. Your incredible deal is 3 days for $99. The AP for $134 is regular price.

It depends on how much you pay. You can upgrade your 3 day ($99) pass to any AP you want, really. You just have to pay the difference.

If you upgrade to an AP it doesn't have to be to the cheapest So Cal. AP You can upgrade to any annual pass that is offered. It really depends on when you think you will be going back to DLR. If you will mainly be going on the weekends, I would suggest getting a Deluxe, as I think both of the So. Cal AP's are blacked out most weekends. In any case, you can go to the Disneyland website, look up AP's and find the block out date calendars for each type of pass. That way you can choose the pass that will be best for you.
If you do buy a less expensive So.Cal pass, you can upgrade at anytime to a more expensive AP. You can upgrade with 'cash' or a blockout ticket, but you cannot upgrade an AP to another AP with any regular admissioin ticket.
