$30 for a taco????

I can't imagine a Mexican restaurant being a big enough deal to warrant a school field trip in the first place. Around here, that's where you stop on the way home from the actual field trip!

LOL! I'd pretend to be in high school and pay twice the $30 fee if someone could find a GOOD Mexican restaurant to go on a field trip to around here!

What was the reasoning on the dresses? That is sort of strange to me (not that your kids didn't want to wear one, that it was mandated). I could see saying "dress nicely/appropriately" and maybe giving suggestions, but only dresses?

Of course, I have the opposite problem-my daughter only wants to wear dresses, even in February when we had a ton of snow on the ground!

Who knows? The teacher is a bit of a kook. The boys have to wear black pants, white t's and a red bandana:confused3 I didn't really look at the girls dress code this year because this year it's my ds.

These kids are 3rd graders! If it were high school then I wouldn't have such a problem b/c they eat more and would get a bit more out of the experience. My ds is 9 and would eat a taco shell, lol. I forgot, I think they also get a sombrero:banana:

3rd graders??? Holy cow I just assumed you were talking about a high school field trip! $30 is a lot for an elementary school students lunch (I think it's a lot for high school!) And this is a public school?
On the one hand I think it's pretty awesome they have Spanish class in elementary school!

I know right?? crazy!!

My district has Spanish starting in Kindergarten:thumbsup2

I'd pay the $30.00 for the field trip if our school would only offer spanish in the younger grades. It doesn't start here until 6th grade. I've hired a private tutor, and then she moved away. I couldn't find another one so now my boys have the Rosetta Stone program. Thats expensive!

Do you have to do the field trip. I can't stand all the field trips my kids take. They usually do things that I do with my kids anyway (like the zoo) but we have to pay twice as much for it when they go with school. I had to pay for each of my boys to go to the zoo with the school even though I have an annual pass. :sad2:

Wow, that sounds really expensive for Mexican food!! My dd (3rd grade) brought home a permission slip yesterday for a field trip to a local Mexican restaurant and it only cost $4.

I totally get what you are saying about field trips being out of control!! I have three kids and it seems like over these last few weeks of school, at least one kid every day brings home a permission slip for a trip (about 1/2 the time the trips require money and the other 1/2 are free trips). Dh and I both work and have a decent income, but I know a lot of parents out there are struggling right now. Plus, it kind of makes you wonder why the extra time isn't spent on continuing instruction. I get the impression once the EOGs are completed that is the end of classroom instruction time. I know there is some educational value in field trips (some kids' parents never take them to the local museum or planetarium), but it seems like they are getting out of hand.

Wow $30 is a lot. My ds went to Howe Caverns which is 2+ hours away and it cost the same.

Huh? I would really love to know what is behind her choice of clothing for the boys. Why the red bandanna?

In my favorite local mexican restaurant they have the booths with painted scenes on them and there are a few with some men wearing red bandana's around their neck, but it looks more like a scarf. Maybe the teacher has been to this restaurant

I feel your pain. Next year I'll have 4 kids in school from elementary to High School. Eldest DS took one field trip this year...in high school...to the zoo. :confused3 Essentially it was just to get the underclassmen out of school while the upper classes took tests. Still was only about 8 bucks or so...they had to buy their own lunches. Just went to a nature preserve with my 9 year old...that one was 12 or 15....

Eldest DS was supposed to go on one in middle school that was a "work together" type place. $60. Um..no...and they expected me to sign a waiver absolving them of fault in case of death and/or dismemberment on the worn out equipment at this place (which was admitted on the form by the location they were going to). Again...um no. He stayed home. The principal thought it was a money issue. Again...no...I just don't send my kids off into the woods and have them possibly not return and have you say "oops".

I have had it with 'field trips' for my ds. The latest notice came home yesterday that for Spanish class, the kids will be going to Mexican restaurant. They can have tacos, arroz con pollo or a quesadilla all for the low, low price of $30:mad: Ridiculous. My ds wants no part of it so he's not going so I'm spared but what about the kids that can't afford it? In the last month they have had 3 trips totaling over $40. Now this? It's almost June, enough already:lmao:

That is actually typical for the meal and the price usually reflects the cost of the Bus transport which is Not included for school field trips, so must be added to the pkg. For those that cannot afford it, the school has a "fund", and all kids regardless of parents income go and enjoy!! ;) Usually the bus runs about 15 to 20 per child (insurance is HIGH) so the meal at a "real" Mexican rest at 15 for drink and entree (generally its 2 taco's, rice and lettuce/refried beans platter) is not bad. By the way, my ds went and Loved it, his school did it for the 6th graders graduating. He is now in HS and he has enlisted us to all go to a different type meal once a month, something we would not normally choose. We're actually going to a Mediter. one tonight, can't wait to try it out. I have to watch as I have been on a diet, but I intend to choose wisely and Enjoy!! :rotfl2:
As far as 4 trips in a month for a class, thats sounds unusual and too costly. Sorry he does not want to go.

$30 for a taco is tough. It should more like 30 tacos for a dollar. "course, I'm not crazy about mexican food.

I am CRAZY about mexican food (though there is no really good places around here) and I still think $30 for a 3rd grader is nuts!

Even busing shouldn't cost that much. We paid $10 for busing to schools for football. I think we had six away games, some being 30-45 minutes away.

.

I just hired 2 school buses to take the 5th grade class for the 5th grade trip from school to a marina about 40 minutes away and to take them back to school when they get off the boat. The total for TWO school buses was 1400.00 for 66 kids and 4 teachers. So its 20.00 alone just for the buses- the actual trip they are going on is another 40.00 a child so per kid its 60.00- not including food!

....say it WITH me:

tah-co BELL-L-L-L-L-L-L-L....

The best tacos I've ever had were $1.25 a piece and came piping hot out of the taco truck! I haven't lived in CA for a while now so it's possible the price may have gone up, maybe they are $1.75 now!!

The best tamales I've had were off those same kinds of taco trucks! Also tamale booths at street faires in CA. :thumbsup2

My son had a field trip last week to a French restaurant for French class. They had a choice of appetizer, entree, and dessert. No transportation was provided. It was $30. That included the tip.

But the french are known to be snooty and arrogant, :snooty: so that price seems more appropriate. :lmao:

Who knows? The teacher is a bit of a kook. The boys have to wear black pants, white t's and a red bandana:confused3

Maybe they are supposed to turn into banditos afterwards, pull the bandanas over their faces and rob banks, like in Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.

now go to Amish country and I think that was $30, it was all you can eat.

What are Amish foods? :confused3
