3 WDW Trips in 6 months: August, October and December Reports *Completed*

Oh, those are such beautiful pictures. I am even MORE excited about POFQ, if that is even possible.

I actually have a picture of the frog fountain as my background on my computer at work. It's so neat looking!!

Eeeee! I am so excited for January!

Glad you like them. I know you and Jen are going to have a blast at French Quarter! It's one of my favorite resorts at Disney. I've got some more photos of the pool and lobby to post pretty soon, so I hopre you'll enjoy them too.

bonfamilles-600.jpg

Continuing along the lobby, I found this nondescript door near the Scat Cat Club. This was the former entrance to Bonfamille’s Café, If you read the Flashback report in my pre-trip, you might remember that when this was open it was our favorite breakfast spot in Disney World and where our beignet tradition started. It’s still a little sad to know it just sits there now. :(

scatcatclub-600.jpg

Next to it is the Scat Cat Club. We’re pretty sure it’s been expanded into an area that use to be part of Bonfamille’s. It used to only be just a little off the lobby but now it’s mostly tucked into this little room.

Across the way in the shop, a few trivia questions were posted. Do you know all the answers?

A look at some of the decorative touches out by the lobby.

polamp-600.jpg

I actually went to New Orleans a few years back, and the architecture in the airport reminded me so much of this lobby, especially the brick and the ceilings.

popool1-600.jpg

Outside, we head over to the Doubloon Lagoon pool for a quick look-around.

popool2-600.jpg

These alligators have always reminded me of the ones in Fantasia. Not sure if they’re based off them or not, but I think there’s a resemblance.

Scales the Sea Serpent and the King of the Sea (Triton? Neptune? I’ve never heard officially who it’s supposed to me, but since I first stayed here as a kid about a year and a half after The Little Mermaid came out, I’ve thought it was Triton).

Scales winds his way all the way across the pool area until his tail finally reaches the pool bar.

The trip was quickly coming to an end, so we all started heading back to Riverside.

powalkback2-600.jpg

We turn back onto Rue D’Bega on the way back to the Carriage Path.

powalkback6-600.jpg

Back in Riverside, the Sassagoula is filled with activity again. The River boats and marina are now open.

powalkback7-600.jpg

A quick glimpse of stately Oak Manor as we pass.

We were hoping to be able to do some exploring around Alligator Bayou a little before we had to go, but we ended up just not having the time. The trip had come to an end.

Next chapter: August Trip Reflections

Great final pictures.

You know the alligators remind me of Fantasia and alos of the alligators in Robin Hood. Do you remember them? They are bad guys that work for Prince John.

You know, they kind of do. I never thought of that before, Maybe all Disney gators just look alike.

Well, we’ve reached the end of our first part of the trip report. Before moving on to the October trip though, I wanted to post a few last reflections of our “Days of Discovery”.

Weather and Crowds:
daysofdiscoveryweather.jpg

Considering it was August, I’m pretty happy with the weather we had. It did rain for a few hours every afternoon, but it really wasn’t too bad. The rain didn’t really get in the way, and the only thing it prevented us from doing was taking the River Cruise from Riverside to Downtown Disney. Still, it did let up in time for us to take the boat back so it wasn’t too big of a loss. When it wasn’t raining, I was so happy that we had some of the loveliest blue-sky weather than I’ve seen at Disney in a while. Of course, it was also pretty hot when it wasn’t raining, but with plenty of water to stay hydrated and enough time in the air conditioning to cool us down, it was fine.

For being early August, I was a bit surprised at the crowds. The parks were by no means empty, but I was expecting much worse considering that most schools, especially in Florida, were still out on summer vacation. Wait times for some of the bigger attractions did exceed an hour later in the day, but for us, the longest wait of the trip ended up being 20 -25 minutes for Soarin’ at rope drop. Getting there early and Fastpass certainly helped.

Port Orleans Riverside:
daysofdiscoveryresort.jpg

It was so nice to stay at Riverside again. After three trips in a row of staying at Pop Century, a moderate resort, especially one of our family’s favorites, was a great change of pace. The rooms were good sized and comfortable with some nice convenient perks you don’t usually get at the Values (two sinks in the bathroom, refrigerator, etc.). Acadian House was a good location. It wasn’t the closest to the main pool or dining locations, but the walk wasn’t too bad. It was also next to another smaller pool as well which we didn’t really use this time.

This was also our first time doing Online Check-In, and I thought it went really smoothly. Very quick and easy, and I was a little surprised that our room was ready for us even though we were there before 3pm. All in all, a great addition to the resort experience.

New and Rediscovered Attractions:
daysofdiscoverynew.jpg

I’m always amazed at the number of new things we seem to try and discover and rediscover every year- even when it doesn’t seem like that many new things have been added. Of course, I think the biggest new hit for this trip was the Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure. I expected that everyone would enjoy it, but I think we all got into it even more than I thought we would. It was so much fun to go around the countries and see all little details and new special effects. I’m sure we’ll end up doing this again, especially since all four of us were talking about what missions we want to try next time before we even left EPCOT that day!

Bordering on being a new attraction and a rediscovered one, the re-imagineered O Canada movie turned out to be pretty cute. Martin Short was fun as the host, and if you haven’t seen it since the change (or haven’t seen it at all), I’d recommend checking it out. Also new to us this year were the Tam Tam Congo show in the Animal Kingdom’s Harambe, Scuba Diving Demonstration inside The Seas with Nemo and Friends, the new Moroccan Style exhibit in the gallery at EPCOT’s Morocco, and the EPCOT Opening Ceremonies before rope drop. The first three are interesting little diversions worthy of a look if you get the chance. The EPCOT opening ceremonies didn’t impress me very much. It just wasn’t as fun of a production as Magic Kingdom’s or Disney’s Hollywood Studios’. Still didn’t get a chance to check out Animal Kingdom’s ceremonies so hopefully we’ll see them next time.

As far as rediscovered attractions (aka things we haven’t seen in 5 or more years), Festival of the Lion King was my favorite of the trip. It’s really a fun show and I can’t believe it’s been five years since we’ve seen it last! It seems like they’ve made some nice improvements since last time (especially Timon who looks great now) , and I’d say that the show seems even better now than before. It had also been five years since we really checked out the Aquariums in The Seas instead of just doing the ride and Turtle Talk.

Dining:
daysofdiscoverydining.jpg

All in all, this was a truly fantastic trip for dining. The three table service restaurants that we went ate at- Bongo’s Cuban Café at Downtown Disney, Yak & Yeti at Animal Kingdom, and Chefs de France at EPCOT- were all great. If I had to pick a favorite for this trip though, I think I’d go with Yak & Yeti. It’s a little hard for me to say that because Chefs de France is one of my long-time favorites at Disney, but Yak & Yeti is certainly on the same level as Chefs in terms of quality and atmosphere. All of us really enjoyed our meals there and Dad even said that our server (whose name I wish I could remember so I could credit him) was one of the best he’s had anywhere in a long time- high praise indeed since Dad was a server himself years ago and has somewhat high standards. The only major negative at Yeti was that somehow our ADRs didn’t make it from Disney’s databases to the restaurant. It didn’t look like we were the only people having that trouble and, again, the host made it sounds like this happens a lot, so I’d recommend checking at the restaurant the day of your meal to make sure you’re on the list just to be safe. Chefs de France was also very good, especially the food and atmosphere. Chef Remy was a fun addition to the restaurant. Bongos was not too far behind the other two. It had some great food to start off the trip with!

As far as counter service, dinner at Tangierine Café at EPCOT, the muffulettas at Riverside Mill, and our breakfast and beignets at Sassagoula Floatworks at French Quarter were definite highlights. The only mediocre meal of the trip for me this time was that bagel at Riverside which was mostly my fault for not being clear when ordering and not saying anything when the CM at the bakery counter misunderstood me. Lesson learned.

Characters:
daysofdiscoverycharacters.jpg

Even though I still didn’t get to meet any new characters, I was very happy with the ones I did get to meet on this trip. I end up getting autographs from three characters I had previously only gotten photos of (Lilo, Terk and Marie), visited four Character photo locations I’d never been to before- all of which were fantastic (Africa Character Greeting Trails at AK, Discovery Island Character Leanding at AK, Character Spot at EPCOT, and Snow White’s new Wishing Well at EPCOT), and got to meet Remy for the first time in his new tiny form as opposed to when he was full-sized at the Animation building at Hollywood Studios when the film first came out.

I was pretty happy with the assortment of character out in the parks on this trip. It seemed like a nice mixture of the really well-known characters like Mickey, Pooh and Princesses and others that I don’t normally see in the parks very often like Marie, Kenai, Koda and Terk. Sadly, I’ve heard since the trip Kenai and Koda have been retired from character appearances, which is kind of a shame. Brother Bear really wasn't that great of a Disney movie, but they were fun in the parks. At the end of the trip, I had taken photos of 22 characters (not bad for just two days in the parks!) and even the rest of the family had met a few as well, which doesn’t always happen. I do have to give a special shout-out to Stitch at the Animal Kingdom, Baloo, King Louie, Kenai and Goofy for being some of the most animated and funniest characters of the trip. :thumbsup2

Summer Events:
daysofdiscoverysummer.jpg

Disney doesn’t seem to go too all-out with seasonal events in the summer as they do with other times of the year (Food and Wine, Flower and Garden, Halloween, Christmas, etc.), but there are a few things here and there. The Sounds Like Summer Concert Series at EPCOT turned out to be pretty fun. It’s not the biggest thing in the world, but the band we saw was good, and if the other bands of the series are of similar quality I would recommend giving it a try if the group looks interesting to you.

The other seasonal offering we experienced was the Good Times Gathering Spot at Camp Minnie-Mickey in AK. It was actually pretty cute and seemed like a nice diversion for young kids away from the crowds. Just watch out grown-ups: you may be volunteered to be the Team Captain and have a bunch of kids and characters put clothes pins all over you. Oh yes, you have been warned.

It was a really fun trip, and I hope you enjoyed the report. If anyone has any questions that I might be able to answer, I’d be happy to try. Otherwise, thanks for reading and a special thanks to all those who have responded. You all are awesome. I’ll be starting up the October “Happy Birthday” segment of the report very soon, so keep an eye out for it if you like. :woohoo: I’m extremely excited about getting that report started since it was a great trip too. Anyway, thanks again for reading and I hope that you’ll all stick around for the “Happy Birthday” report.

I think that was one of the best trip wrap ups I have ever read. :thumbsup2

I loved how you recapped everything, a nice way to remember what your trip was like. :goodvibes

I'm really sad about Koda and Kenai. I love Brother Bear and was hoping to meet them. I wonder if they will end up back in the Canada pavilion in WS...??

Wow, thanks LL! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I really wanted it to be the type of wrap-up that hits all the highlights of the trip so if someone didn't really want to read the whole thing, they could get somewhat of a quick Cliffnote version of it with the most helpful info as far as trip planning. Then again, I also had a blast putting it together and remembering the trip again myself.

As far as I've heard, Kenai and Koda have now been pretty much retired like most of the characters from the more recent films (Meet the Robinsons, Chicken Little, Bolt, Treasure Planet, etc.). I wouldn't count on seeing them anything soonm unfortunatly. If they did, I would more expect them to maybe show up at the entrance to AK that over in Canada again. EPCOT seems to be getting rid of characters left and right these days- Dopey, Mushu Genie, and now I've heard even Eeyore had been removed from being a regular there now! Wish that they'd keep these new character out longer. I didn't get a chance to meet most of the ones that came and went in the last few years besides the Brother Bear ones. :(

What a bummer about the more recent characters. I really wish they would rotate them even on an irregular basis. I would flip if I could find the Meet the Robinson characters. Sigh. I'm really glad that I will be going in January and hopefully be able to meet up with Tiana.

I agree on the wrap-up, great job!

The KP missions are definitely fun. Maybe when I go in April I can do a couple more.

I hear ya on rediscovering FOTLK. We saw that for the first time in several years on our trip in Dec. '07 and I definitely realized how awesome that show is.

Can't wait to read about your birthday trip.

Well, if anyone can break this trend, here's hoping that it's Tiana. If The Princess and the Frog is as good as they say it is, I'm sure Tiana will be around for a long time.

Well, now that the August trip report is complete, it’s time to fast forward a few months October. Buzz and I had great time celebrating our birthday (just as a reminder, yes, we’re twins) and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you. I’m still working on getting the first chapter written, but in the mean time, here’s a brief introduction along with some more photos of what you can expect to see in the report:

lovebug-3003.jpg

A one night stay at All Star Movies Resort

cinderellacastle-300.jpg

Next chapter: Arrival at All Star Movies

Hehehe, love your comment..."yes we're twins".

That birthday cupcake looks so yummy! Much better than the cottage cheese I'm eating for breakfast. ;)

Well, it's the answer to a question that does get asked by us quite often- and many more times on this trip.

Hi Meeko! :flower3:

I can sympathise with you on the 'twins' comment, except I usually get it from the other angle - "Yes, they are twins". It was worse when they were babies, but I did get a few "both boys?" comments - even though Heather was wearing a dress??!!:headache:

Great round up - I'm glad you liked Yak & Yeti - it was our favourite restaurant from last year, and I was a bit worried no one would like it after I raved about it!

Your birthday trip sounds like really good fun - can't wait to read about all the birthday surprises!

Great to see you Di.

Oh, that's terrible about the "both boys" comments. :sad2: You certainly get some interesting comments and questions with twins.

Glad you enjoyed the final reflections. Yak & Yeti was wonderful. I think it even exceded the expectations I had from your review (and mine were pretty high!) I think we've got a new restaurant to add to the favorites list.

I'm almost done with the first chapter of the birthday trip and will hopefully be getting it up tomorrow. :)

Welcome to All Star Movies! We pulled in a little after 7am and went straight to check in. Since it was early, they weren’t at all busy, and we must have only waited a minute or two, if that. We had done online check-in again and it went just as quickly and easily as it did back in summer. Our room wasn’t ready yet, but the CM at the counter was able to tell us that we were in the Love Bug section. Since we had requested Toy Story it was a little disappointing, but alright. Wouldn’t you know it they’d put us in the only area of the hotel that was based on a Disney movie I can’t remember if I’ve ever seen? I know Buzz has seen at least the first one with Dean Jones but I’m pretty sure I’ve only seen scenes of it here and there. Still, we knew that we’d have fun no matter where we stayed and we would at least get to go see the Toy Story area, so we were ok with it. The CM who checked us in have us our packet complete with birthday buttons inside! She asked if we knew about how to get free birthday admission, and of course we did. It was the whole reason for the trip! She seemed really excited for us and wished us our first “happy birthday” of the day (well, besides the two of us saying it to each other).

asmarrival2-600v2.jpg

Having checked it, we decided to park the car closer to the Love Bug section and then do a little exploring before heading to the park. This was our first time ever staying any of the All Star Resorts, so we wanted to make sure to have plenty of time to look around and get some pictures.

asmarrival5-600v2.jpg

First stop this morning- The Love Bug. Here’s our building with Herbie sticking out of it.

asmarrival4-600.jpg

The Winner’s Circle between the two buildings. The plaque next to the trophy said that the Herbie in the display was actually used in parades at the Magic Kingdom for twenty years, which I thought was pretty cool. It’s a piece of Walt Disney World history right outside our hotel room.

asmarrival6-600.jpg

asmarrival7-600.jpg

The building across the way. I have to admit, the Love Bug area was pretty cool. I’m actually feeling pretty glad we stayed there since I don’t think I would have really spent much time checking it out otherwise.

asmarrival8-600v3.jpg

Next stop for this morning was the Fantasia/2000 area, complete with Daisy and Donald.

asmarrival9-600.jpg

The ballerina from “The Steadfast Tin Soldier”.

asmarrival10-600.jpg

The villainous Jack-In-The-Box.

asmarrival11-600.jpg

The Soldier himself.

asmarrival12-600.jpg

It was interesting to see a whole area based on Fantasia/2000 since it seems to be pretty forgotten today. It’s cool that the film had some presence in Disney World. By this time, it was getting close to 8am, so decided to save the rest of the areas for another time and head for the bus stop. We wanted to give ourselves plenty of time so we could get to the park, redeem our free passes, see the “Good Morning” show and be there for rope drop.

asmarrival13-600.jpg

A few quick shots of the lobby as we head to the bus stop. They had a whole display of photos representing all the Oscars that Disney has won over the years which was very interesting to look at. That’s Angela Lansbury in the middle singing the title song from Beauty and the Beast

asmarrival14-600.jpg

asmarrival15-600.jpg

We managed to make it to the bus stop in plenty of time. I had heard a lot of horror stories about the buses at the All Stars, but I was pleasantly surprised with how relatively speedy the service was. I was under the impression that the three All Star resorts all shared a single bus, but going to and coming back from Magic Kingdom, each All Star had its own bus and their own bus stop. Not sure if it’s like that at every park or location, but as far as Magic Kingdom goes it was a good (albeit long since it is on the other side of property) trip. They weren’t playing any music or announcements on the bus like we’ve experienced lately, but that was ok. While on the bus we also received a few more “happy birthday” wishes from other guests. Seems that a number of families were celebrating birthdays. Finally we started getting glimpses of monorails, Space Mountain and Cinderella Castle. We were almost there!

Next chapter: Magic Kingdom!

I think the next value I want to try is All Star Movies. I'd love to see the lobby with all the Oscar pictures. Very neat.

You must have gotten an early start to arrive at 7am! :scared1: Disney is worth it though. :rotfl:

Great to see you Di.

Oh, that's terrible about the "both boys" comments. :sad2: You certainly get some interesting comments and questions with twins.

I just thought "are you blind??!!" I think people don't really look, they just see 2 babies and blurt something out, still it gives us something to look back on and laugh about. ;)

Great photos - I love Herbie! I used to have a Beetle years ago called "Bertie" - I loved that car. :cloud9:

You must have been up really early - no lie in on your birthday? Still, being at MK makes up for that!

Di x
