Once again we start the day with cereal and toast along with tea. As we are running low on fuel we head off to the gas station down the road and find that due to the rockslide prices have increased to $4.01 a gallon
But as it is a captive market not a lot that can be done about it so we put in $30 and head off. There is just the one road up to Glacier Point so it is the same journey for the majority of the way back! Anyway first stop is a view point on the way out of Yosemite, we have to go through Yosemite to get to the road for Glacier Point. We were at the view point the previous day on the open top trolley tour but today it is quieter and the sun is shining slightly more.
After this brief stop we start on the road to Glacier Point and to be honest I thought it would be more open than what it was but the side of the mountains are covered in trees. Finally after about 20 miles or so we reach a lovely look out and there in front of us in the Yosemite Valley and in the distance snow capped peaks. First we spot the Nevada Falls.
Then as we turned to our left we could see Half Dome rising up out of the valley floor. Wow what a sight it was.
It was still a few more miles until we reached Glacier Point but once again the scenery did not disappoint. With the waterfalls in the distance looking so small compared to the rest of the mountains. You could see the majority of the valley and the buildings we had seen the day before looked so small down there.
After getting some piccies and taking in the scenery we stopped at the cafe for an ice cream, we both chose the mint Hagen Daz bars
We then drove slowly back down as there had been places we saw on the way up that we wanted to stop at. One such place was a meadow that just appeared from nowhere even though we must have been at about 6000 feet.
Once back down into Yosemite we stopped at Bridal Veil Falls and got so close if we had stood there for more than a few minutes we would have been soaked!
As we had a kitchenette at the hotel and the store in Yosemite was well stocked we stopped in there to pick up some things for dinner. On the way back we stopped to look at the Yosemite Falls close up and it was very very tall!
We also stopped to look up at El Capitan and see if we could spot any climbers.
We could then see about two thirds of the way up a red dot which we then worked out as being a sleeping bag pinned to the face of the cliff with hooks
The road out of Yosemite to our hotel followed the Merced River and in places it was very swollen from the snowmelt and also a rock fall. It looked like the face of the cliff had just fallen away.
There were huge boulders in the river, knowing how the rockslide had closed the road a few miles away it was easy to see how anything could happen at any time.
Once back at the hotel we had a swim and after a shower we prepared dinner and sat out on the patio by the river. Dinner was beef slices, cheese and salad with French style bread and a glass or two of the white wine, Sutter's Pinot Grigo, we had bought in Lake Tahoe at Safeway
It was a lovely end to a very scenic day listening to the river crashing past us as we ate
Tomorrow we were off to the desert.
