3 month old in August Heat

we all have to do what is best for our own families....

for us, while we take definite precautions against burns (I am a redhead and both my girls are fair), heat exhaustion and dehydration...we cannot live our lives until after 5 pm each day.

I'm not advocating never going outside with a baby. I'm simply not advising being outside at a theme park for 8 days with a baby in the intense heat & humidity. If the OP chooses to do that, well, it's her right as a parent. Perhaps she can work things out so that she stays indoors with the baby most of the time and still gets to enjoy her family at WDW.

Well you did say that you didn't go out after five ...??? must have been crappy in Miami until 5:01 every day.....

there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with taking a baby any time of year at WDW...you just have to have certain expectations...

we just went to the beach for fireworks with a 2 (almost 3 year old) and an almost 5 month old!! DD#1 kept asking why we weren't at WDW......I guess I should have said it is just TOO HOT dear!!

the more I read this..............what were you advocating?

there are many "other" types of people that can't "handle" the heat than babies...................................................

I decided to jump on this board tonight when we got home from fireworks, and after i put dd to bed, to get some ideas for disney...write them in my notebook, enjoy some relax time. But I can't help but notice that you *lillygater* are on these boards constantly bickering with other people..almost reaving them up over things. Back and Forth..Back and Forth. I know that some people are like that..and that you are tucked away in your house..so you can just say whatever you want...and be all sarcastic and not give a darn. But I just don't understand where all the hostility comes from??? No need to respond I am not going to check back to this post. But, I just thought maybe you didn't realize how sarcastic you were being, and how rude you were when other people didn't agree with you. I for one log on to get ideas on Disney..and look forward to hearing other's friendly advice on topics that I need advice with..Not to debate people. Just my opinion though.

Thanks!! and let's spell GATOR right shall we??? and I can be whatever I want you all are being sarcastic to people who WANT to take little ones to WDW aren't you?? or are you forgetting? I TOO come here for tips or/ideas but.....

I don't really care who agrees with me or not but when people are speaking of the HEAT, TAKING KIDS, and LIVING HERE - I get UPSET - I mean it is ridiculous....you asked me in another thread what would a ** month old get out of a trip to WDW...well what would a person on oxygen?? or an overweight person who can't walk??? It isn't your place to judge that...and I'll bet you read this......................:)

My beef is with people who are constantly putting down those who take children..and being in the heat ---------it is a way of LIFE for some!!

Lets try to be nice to eachother. :flower:

yep -our ac is right about at 68!! it IS hot here...something all of us who live here have to deal with..........but once you get used to it..

nah.....there is no getting used ot it!!!

I personally would not take my DD to Disney in August at 3 months, but would never judge someone who chose too. I did take her at 8 weeks in December though and many ppl thought we were crazy.

The big issue here is that OP doesn't want to take the baby, but MIL is trying to guilt her into doing it. OP - if you don't want to take the baby then don't. And you don't have to go on vacation and leave the baby either. Do what is best for your family (DH and your kids) and don't worry about MIL. She does not get a vote.

Well said Tammie. I was stating my opinion as well and was surprised at the turn the post took.

Hi Jackson4: I know you want to bring her with you, but please consider how she will feel in that heat. It is much easier for an older child to express any discomfort, like I'm thirsty, I'm hot... little infants just cry when they need something. A lot of people just rule out those cries to mean the child is just tired and then they miss out on a valid complaint from the child.

Maybe I'm wrong, but if you can keep your child out of that heat, please do so. The last thing you need is a cranky baby to make you feel even more tired.

Your MIL should be told " she is a little baby, and it is way too hot for her to be going around the park in that heat, even for 1 hour".

Sorry, just my opinion, but I'm sure most parents would agree.

Can't we all just get along.
I was just looking for ideas, not guilt for how I feel about having my DD out in the heat.
I'm sorry this thread had to turn into an arguement! :sad2: :sad1:

::MinnieMo Thanks!

I don't think it's harmful for ME to be out in florida heat in august, heck, I lived in Miami for a while and I got used to it-that faint sizzling sensation on the top of your head that says, your brain and any eggs you put here are frying.

So if people are asking opinion, just like a certain body cavity, everyone has one and it's not helpful.

If she doesn't want to go because she's afraid of the heat, then don't go!

It's okay not to want to go because of that, whether the fear is justified or not. If you're going to worry the whole time, then it's not worth it.

So, the question wasn't an objective one about will the heat damage my kid, because the objective answer is, it depends.

Her question was, how do I deal with the fear concerning it?

And my answer is, December 1-15, baby!

I'd let your MIL know that you're not going in August, but you could all go in _____, ______, or _________ dates. Give her several dates to choose from. A 3 month old is hard work, WDW is expensive (unless you live right there), with travel, hotel etc. Bottom line, it should be enjoyable. You don't sound like you'd be enjoying yourself worrying about the baby.

About the heat, remember at 3 mths the baby will be lying flat on his/her back in the stroller, or held by one of you. That means that half the baby's body will be sweltering against a fabric or person. As an adult, this just doesn't sound comfortable--and we can regulate our body temp better than they can.

We just returned from a trip with our 6 month old. I think the heat is manageable if you are prepared and this is what you want to do. Careful planning...a morning at the parks, and afternoons in the hotel, etc. as well as rest days and the proper equipment are essential. Number 1 priority is the proper stroller. We have an older combi stroller that was perfect...our dd does not sit yet and this stroller fully reclines for a completely flat surface (more like a pram or a carriage) and it has an enourmous hood that is able to be moved from side to side so no matter what direction sun was coming we could block the sun. The handle also flips from side to side on this stroller so we could see our baby, or if she was awake she could sorta sit facing out at the activity. We also traveled with several clip on fans and a mister. Our ped approved the use of suncscreen (and we started at 4 months so I would know her reaction to the sunscreen and being out in the warm weather). A rain cover for the stroller (made by Graco) was also essential...we had many sudden downpors and our infant was dry as could be with that cover. Many moms asked about that cover as they tried to shield their babies with a rain poncho. Make the best decision for your family and then be prepared if you decided to make the trip. I would be happy to anwser any specific questions about travel with an infant if you would like. We took our older daughter to WDW at 3 months (but that was in October so weather was less of an issue).
