Hey there everyone. I have been on the fence about bringing my 3 month old to WDW in mid-August. My MIL has been giving me the "I want to see my grandchildren in Disney before I die "(she is only 55 and is healty - not that that means anything). Its not like my 3 month old will remember anything.

I am just really concerned about the whole heat issue. Infants can not regulate their body temp. And you can't put sunscreen on them at that age either.

I don't know - I guess I'm just looking for advice - Last time I was in WDW in August, I was 13!!!

Thanks
:)

We are going in August with a crew of us. None younger than 3. I personally would not take a 3 month old to WDW in August. You are right they cannot regulate their own temperature. It will be brutal with the heat and humidity. There is plenty of time to go with your MIL. I would suggest early December less crowds and it is already decorated for the Holiday.

If you do decide to go, talk to your Ped first.

We took our third child to WDW last Aug when he was 3 mos. old. I was nervous about the heat and the sun so I got a spf cover thing for the carseat and the stroller along with 2 clip on fans from ONE STEP AHEAD. They were awesome and my son was cool and comfortable during our vacation. I went into air conditioning throughout the day and I sprayed him with the mister fan and he was fine. We can only go in Aug. every year so we just put up with the heat and protect the kids from the sun. My ped. said I could use zinc oxide cream if we were in the sun and he absolutely needed it so I put some on him when we were at AK. (I wouldn't go there again with a baby that young in Aug. Way too much walking without shade or A/C.) If you have any more questions about bottles, etc, just pm me.
Hope this helps!

Does the trip have to be in August? I would not want to take a baby to central FL in August, for exactly the same reasons. I think the risk of heat exhaustion would be too much. Perhaps you could wait and go at a cooler time of year, like Thanksgiving.

We have a family wedding in Orlando so we are making a vacation out of it (my MIL's idea). My 3 yr old DD will be in her glory.

We have a Ped appt on Tues, so I am going to see what he thinks.

I hate to leave my 3 month DD for that long - I don't know what to do!

Our next trip will be at a cooler time of year!!

I would just explain to MIL that she is still very young, and so is your baby. You would love to take a trip to DW with her and the child when your baby is 2 or even 3. I am all for bring kids to the world when they are young..but 3 months??? I am sure the baby would still have fun and enjoy the surroundings but couldn't MIL take you and baby somewhere less expensive and maybe a little closer to you this year..and then next year or the year after when your child knows who and what Disney is all about..take them??
I would be scared as you say with August heat as well. I know we were there a few years back in August and we were 6 cranky adults * pirate: * I can't imagine what it would have been like if my daugter were born and we had her with us. :sad2:
In any fact..you are the mommy, I don't know if your MIL is like mine ie:  (crazy..shh!) But don't let her talk you into something that you know in your heart isn't right for you and your family, or your baby right now.
Hope this helps a little.
Have fun whatever you decide

Neither would I want to take an infant to WDW in the summer months - but if you do decide to remember the baby care centers are a great place to hang out and rock with the baby to cool him/her off. Last month (early June) we were talking to a young mom with an infant (2 or 3 mos old) and she was lamenting that she was spending a lot of time sitting in the baby care centers keeping the baby cool while her DH did the parks with their other little son and daughter. With other adults along you could just concentrate on spending your time keeping the little one cool instead of standing in lines, etc - meet up with the family for meals - go back to the hotel mid-day - that's what I loved doing for DD when we took DGrD at 5 mos - but that was in Jan. :smooth:

No way would I take a 3 month old to WDW in August!

We took our children, 4 months and 2 years at the time, last year in late august. When we arrived I thought, "what am I doing in this heat with my kids!" We are from western PA and didn't figure in the intensity of heat. We usually go in the fall and this was our first time with kids. I kept her covered and took her into air conditioning frequently. I loved the baby centers and did spend a lot of time there. If I had to do over I would pick a cooler time of year. We are going again this year and hoping it will be a little cooler at the end of september.

I would not take an infant to WDW in the summer. I made the mistake of hauling my then 7 month old to our regional Pony Club Rally in Lexington, KY, at the end of July. Despite sticking to the shade and fans near the barn and swimming in the campground pool during longer breaks, she suffered from the heat. Fortunately, one of our PC dad's was a pediatrician and able to help me out. He and his wife ended up helping my dh watch my 2 older boys while I sat in an air conditioned camper for most of the 3 days. It took a good week for the rash and just general flushed look to leave my dd. Too scary.

I took my DD to WDW when she was 3 months old. We only did the parks in the morning, and were back in the room by noon everyday so DH and DS could go swimming and DD could nap. I was breastfeeding at the time so I had to make sure I stayed hydrated. She would eat sitting on a bench in the shade, but did much better on airconditioned attractions like Universe of Energy. I used a mister fan and a clip on fan for the stroller also. We took it very easy, and spent a lot of time at the resort. This wasn't our first and only trip with the kids either. DD has since been 4 times! Are you staying onsite? This could make it easier to get back to the room with the baby and leave MIL and DH with your other child in the park. I will say that it was a very easy trip with DD. She ate and slept. We go every August and still are able to enjoy ourselves despite the heat.

I guess us Floridians with newborns/small children stay indoors for most of the year!!

I would take the baby, but that's just me and obviously I am in the minority here. DD#2 is four months, almost five months old and has been to WDW since she was just shy of four weeks (as well as, GASP, the beach!!)....but we do not tour commando....always do mornings, come back to the pool and back to the park or resort for an evening dinner....that is what we would do whether we had children or not. Being close and able to go ofter affords us the attitude that we don't have to see everything. For others, who are making a once a year/lifetime trip this may not be the case and may get upset if they don't see or do certain things.

Taking precautions as far as the heat goes will go a long way....I think small babies are the easiest to care for and USUALLY just go with the flow. (I realize not all babies are this way, I am lucky enough mine were/are). Your three year old may need more attention as far as dealing with the heat than the baby does....

I would also take the baby - I agree with the comments of bjakmom!!

I lost my db when he was 19. It was due to a car accident (it was 11 years ago). I regret that he never met my dd (who I was pregnant with at the time of his death) or got to go on our family vacations to WDW. Ever since then we sometimes take more vacations than most people we know- we just make more family time - since you never know how long you will be together. Losing someone that young I guess did something to DH and I as it changed our whole outlook on things.

Now we never took the kids to WDW that young - youngest was 18 months old - but we did take them to Myrtle Beach, Gatlinburg, etc when they were that young. Since your MIL wants to take the baby to WDW with you and since you will be there anyway - I would take the baby. You never know what the future holds!!

I also agree with bjakmom. Go, but be adamant that keeping the baby cool is your priority. The Baby Care Centers are nice, but you can also relax in one of the counter service restaurants, go shopping, or take in an indoor show. I would excuse myself during the really hot hours in the afternoon and go back to the hotel.

Talk to your ped. about the sunscreen issue. We went when my DD was 4 months old and our ped. didn't bat an eye at us using the sunscreen for babies. She's very cautious normally so I was surprised, but she said that it was much more important for the baby to not get burned. Even a couple of minutes in the Florida sun can start turning their skin pink!

I am sorry, but I would not take a three month old to WDW in August.

Actually, when we lived in Miami we did NOT take our kids outdoors until around 5pm because the sun is just so intense. All the parks were like ghost towns until sunset, then they came alive with children. It was like living in a vampire movie, haha. The worst sunburn I ever got was on the day after Christmas ( forgot to wear sunscreen!)

Parents get to decide whether to take their kids out in the heat and sun. I have on child who doesn't regulate his temperature well(he has brain damage.) He has suffered heat exhaustion several times, in spite of my best efforts. It's just not worth the risk, IMO>

:flower: LOL :flower: This is exactly what I was thinking. Either people who live in florida don't leave thier houses or they don't have kids!! Anyhow I say take your baby and spend your mornings at the parks and spend the afternoons in the pool or hanging out at your resort. I have also taken both of my children when they are very small. My DD went for the first time when she was 7 months old and DS went for the first time this past May at :flower: 5 months old. We went to the parks in the morning and spent the hottest part of the day at the Poly in the pool then we would go back to the parks in the evening and for dinner, this is what we have always done anyway so it works out great for us. I also have nursed both of my children and therefore have spent my fair share of time in the baby care centers or on the long, cool rides like POC, HM, Spaceship Earth, things like that which are dark and long so that I can feed the kids in a cool place.

Have fun whatever you decide.

Thanks
I don't know what I'm going to do - We still have 5 weeks to decide. I have plenty of family to take care of her.

I'm not acting like I don't take her out in the heat. It gets pretty hot in PA too! I just don't know about spending 8 days in the sun and heat. I think its a lot for a infant

Thanks for your feedback!

we all have to do what is best for our own families....

for us, while we take definite precautions against burns (I am a redhead and both my girls are fair), heat exhaustion and dehydration...we cannot live our lives until after 5 pm each day.
