3 hour glucose tolerance test - QUESTION

Mine were
Here were the results:

Fasting want to be under 95 - I read 75 (yea)
1 hour want to be under 180 - I read EXACTLY 180
2 hour want to be under 155 - I read 157 (fail, but you can fail one level and still pass overall)
3 hour want to be under 140 - I read 124

So I was borderline, but passed. They just said to watch my simple sugars. Which, honestly I could be doing better on. But there hasn't been sugar in my urine which they check at each visit.

Try not to worry. Your numbers aren't bad.

Okay, I'm back. It wasn't so bad, especially since the technician who too my blood was sooo nice. She let me use my glucometer after she drew the blood, and let me take the blood from the vein that was still leaking. Though she warned me that the results would not match up perfectly. For what it's worth, here is the reading I got using my glucometer:

(I am using the goal values a previous poster wrote in this thread)

Fasting: Goal: < 95 Actual: 106 (flunked)
1 hour: Goal: < 180 Actual: 167 (passed)
2 hour: Goal: < 155 Actual: 155 (just passed, or borderline passed)
3 hour: Goal: < 140 Actual: 68

Not sure what they would say if they got the same results as above. I'm supposed to pass 3/4 and I was right on the line once, and flunked once. Not sure if that would make me GD.

I went to A&P right after and got a bunch of stuff to eat. I was so shaky and felt like I was going to pass out I wolfed down a bagel and cream cheese in the car!

Thank you so much for all your support! I'll let you know what the DR. office says. If I passed, I'm giving my glucometer away. Any takers?

I'm jumping in kind of late here! I was diagnosed with GD at 12 wks, back in February, and I am almost done now:cool1: I failed my 1 hr with a reading of 169. I didn't even get to do the 3hr test after failing my fasting level by a just a couple of points. The goals I follow are a bit different (given to me by the Diabetes Educator and the OBGYNs). My fasting is <100 and 2 hours After Meal is <120.

If you do have GD, don't fret too much--it could make it worse;) I have to test 4 times a day and count carbs at all times. I've only gained 5lbs and my baby is measuring perfectly. I started having Biophysical Profiles/Non-stress tests last week and will have them weekly until the baby is born. I'm monitored a lot closer now than I was in my other pregnancies (this is #3 but first with GD). I'm glad I am watched so closely but also very greatful that I haven't needed any more intervention. My other two kids were born early, at 37 and 38 weeks, so I'm hoping this baby will decide to do the same thing so the doctors don't have to decide when I'm 'done'. I'm very hopeful that she and I will not have any problems postpartem since the GD has been so well managed.

Good luck either way! Keep us updated! I'd be happy to share more if you need more advice:goodvibes

What is going to kill me is my fasting number of 106, if it truly is 106 (one touch monitor says it is). I think if you get over 95 on your fasting number you are labeled GD. :( What stinks is I think I made it go up through all my stressing out. I tested 100 first thing in the morning and between that time and getting to the lab it went up 6 points! I had NOTHING to eat and only a little water.

I was so confused by that in the beginning until it was explained to me that going TOO long without eating raises your blood sugar. Something about your liver over-compensating (I'm not a science person, it went WAY over my head). My morning fasting levels were too high (110ish) for the first month until I started drinking about 4oz of milk after a potty-break overnight. Now I'm always between 90-95.

Thanks for explaining that to me. I guess I shouldn't have fasted for 12 hours. Maybe 10? If not for that first number, I'd feel much better about the test. then again, maybe my one touch monitor will not match what they have. Hopefully they have lower numbers than one touch!

I think I won't call them -- I'm just going to wait for them to call me. If I don't get a call by Friday I'll have a little party for myself. :)

one thing that can help is to eliminate all white foods from your diet. Just following that rule May very well bring the numbers down so you do need any eds.

I am definitely doing that - and have been following that way of eating for a couple of weeks. Maybe my readings would have been even worse had I not turned my diet around when I did.

One good thing that will come of all of this: I will still follow a diet free of white stuff and count my carbs.

I had GD with all 3 of my pregnancies, and I think you're right about a high fasting = automatic diagnosis. That's the way my OB went, anyway - with my first baby, I failed the first 2 readings but passed the 2nd 2, but she said they'll almost always diagnose it with a high fasting level.

Anyway, even if you do have it, honestly, it gets easier. I was so freaked out the first week, but after that it gets to be so routine and by the time you have the baby, it's no big deal at all. There are meds now that are safe for pregnancy as well, so odds are good that you won't even have to have insulin injections (and most women can control it with diet alone).

I'm guessing you've been researching lots about GD - try not to get worried. Yes, it's serious, but it's easily managed and as long as you do what you need to do, the vast majority of all those complications are just not a big concern. You'll get lots of extra monitoring, which is kind of nice for peace of mind. And none of my babies needed the sugar water - just some immediate nursing, which you'll probably do anyway. They do check the baby several times that first day, but once I delivered, no more finger pricks for me! My doctor even ordered me double desserts on my lunch tray!

As for the post-pregnancy diabetes, I've heard anywhere from 50-90%. My doctor just said to consider it a warning signal - make some changes in diet/lifestyle and you'll be way ahead of the game. (that's "you" in a generic sense, not YOU ;) ).

Good luck! I'll be happy to answer any questions too!

FatElivs (love the name!) - my only hope is that the onetouch monitor was wrong on the initial blood draw value and it is reallly much lower. I'm holding out hope. Such a bummer. If I am diagnosed with GD, I am going to use it to my advantage by eating healthy and not gaining anymore weight. I've gained 18 lbs so far and I'm 31 weeks along.

Will they need to draw more blood? At the endocronologist? Will they give me yet another 3 hour glucose test? I think this will be easy to control for me. I spent yesterday all day pricking my finger and my blood sugar never went past 101 -- usually lingered in the 90's. I feel like the 106 reading was a fluke because of my long fast, but I guess it's not good for the baby for my blood sugar to rise to 106 in the morning. I guess.

Thanks for the support! :)

Hey - sorry I missed your other questions! Maybe too late, but no, I don't think you'll have to have any more blood draws or another glucose test. I never did anyway. And it sounds like you're doing well, if you had a whole day of good levels. The eating plan is really good, with all 3 of mine I gained less than 20 and didn't gain at all after the diagnosis. (Of course I managed to gain AFTER the baby was born - nice, huh? ;) )

Have you heard anything new?
