3/13/09 Construction Update w/ a few photos

Does anyone think that the additions to the building might be an expansion of the counter service? FW always gets criticized for not having any quick service, and in these days of dining plans (and especially the new QSDP) that is something that is sorely needed at the fort.

Just a thought.

Fantastic job as usual. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't see any of the fake concrete stumps used to house the water/elec. in the 600 loop.

I think they are going away from the fake stumps. When we were in the 200 loop 2 years ago right after they finished the electrical upgrade and couldn't get the stump to work. One of the Electricians pointed out the new electrical box at the rear of the site.
The last time I pulled into a camp spot I backed into a tree when I was leaving. That's how I got my outside shower(It hid the hole from the bike handlebar):cool1:

Also, someone reported talking with a worker some time ago who said the splash zone would be built later in the area of the pink stakes (Tony?).
This area would make the most sense for a splash zone. It's next to the kiddie pool, and close to where the slide steps will presumably begin based upon TCD's photos. If they do indeed build a splash zone I'd be surprised if it went in the other end of the pool area.

I find it very curious that there is a curb around the pool. Do you think they might be putting flagstone over the concrete deck? It seems like a trip hazard as it is. Also, someone reported talking with a worker some time ago who said the splash zone would be built later in the area of the pink stakes (Tony?). Do you think the stakes will be the construction wall for the next phase as they build the splash zone after opening the pool? That would jibe with them marking the edge of the concrete and attaching to the building. Just a theory.

Shan- I am not sure about the flagstone, but I think something is going to be done on the rough surfaces that still exist on the "curbs" around the kiddie pool and the large pool. I was also wondering about access for the disabled. On some of Disney's pools, they built special areas for access for those in wheelchairs. It is like a small platform with a handrail. I would think that something like this will be incorporated into this pool somewhere.

You might be right about the pink flagged stakes merely marking a new construction fence. This could be some type of second phase to the project, which would explain why this area was not started until later. This area could be fenced off and worked on after the pool is opened. The only thing is that it doesn't make sense for me that there would be so much detail about the stake placement. I mean, would it really be necessary to have all these stakes for just a construction fence.

I think that is a valid theory. I don't think they would be adding a companion restroom here, as someone suggested on another thread. There is room to do that over by the existing restrooms. A small counter service restaurant would work well in this location. Maybe something the size of the counter service restaurant at Wilderness Lodge, or even something a little smaller. If the arcade was moved into the space occupied by the current snack bar, and the current arcade space was expanded by a building addition, I think there would be enough room to put something like that in here. The other thought I had was that this could be a bar. Like the bar they have poolside at Wilderness Lodge. That also would do well here. This edge of the building is just a few steps away from the bridge that is behind the Meadow Trading Post. That is about as central a location as there is in the campground. There is a lot of foot traffic by this area, not only for the pool, but also for the trading post and campfire. A small restaurant/bar with tables and chairs outside would do well here.

But, this is probably going to be some lame little addition to house pool equipment or something.

Yes, the fake stumps seem to have lost favor with Fort Management. The fake stumps were removed from the 1400 loop, even before the latest renovation. And, as far as I know, there never were any on the 1600-1900 loops. Interestingly enough, the existing fake stumps were left on the 600 and 800 loops during the recent renovations. They even got new paint jobs. I am not sure, but I think they were also left on the 400, 500, 1200 and 1300 loops. I'll have to double check next time I'm at the Fort.

Agreed. If there is going to be a splash zone, this would be the most logical place for it. It is out of the way of the ingress and egress to the pool area, and close to the kiddie pool, so smaller kids, who I think are the primary users of this type of attraction, would have easy access to both features.

My vote is for the poolside bar. That thought was going thru my head before I read TCD's suggestion. When we stayed at CSR a few years ago we ate lunch poolside, with food they sold at the bar. There were sandwiches and wraps and nachos--about 4 or 5 items on the menu IIRC. It was good and convenient. I was surprised that they didn't have it at FW already. It would be a small baby step towards getting a "real" counter service restaurant. ;)
We can only hope....

I am familiar with the CSR bar. Something like that would fit in perfectly in this space. In fact, I don't think that it would require much more room than the existing snack bar already occupies. I would expect that there will be increased traffic at the pool with the renovation, so why not capitalize on the crowds? I think this addition to the building will be for something that will generate some $$$ for Disney. The question is what?

That may be for irrigation so that the groundskeepers can turn on and off misters when they need it. In the 1500 Loop they actually used the site water for the irrigation. A landscape guy came by my site every couple of days and turned this knob on and off to run the misters.
That is probably correct. The large brass device in the water line about half way up the post is a backflow prevention device which is required on all irrigation systems.

I am thinking the counter service/bar my be possible. When we where there in December and my mom fell they called FW management. Well while my mom was getting checked out by the medics my dad started to complain about no counter service to the management guy. "They said they where aware of the problem and trying to get something done about it. But at Disney it is easier to close things then open new stuff. But they where trying to get counter service included in the pool refurb." I never mentioned this because I figured it was about like talking to a bus driver. Now that I see the wall coming off the building I have hope. Who knows though may be just another rumor

Wow, so many pictures! :cool1:

But is it just me- or is that hot tub awful tiny? How are we all going to cram ourselves into that thing? I need to lose more weight before this trip. More motivation I guess. :lmao:

I agree with you. Looking at this photo, I would say that you would be lucky to get 8 adults into this hot tub:

I don't think this is anywhere near as big as it should be.

This hot tub is going to be crowded!

TCD,

I noticed in one of the pictures that the pool depth has been made one level. How deep wouold you say that the main pool is going to be now?

That was one thing I liked about the "old swimmin' hole", is that it had a honest to goodness real deep end.... You rarely see that anymore....

Seems like it is maybe 4 1/2 to 5 feet. I think the original shallow end, where the stairs are, is a bit shallower than that- maybe starting at 3 feet where the stairs end.

I agree with you- I liked the deep end. It was not as crowded as the shallow end, and it was nice to jump into on a hot day. But, nobody asked me for my opinion. :(

I agree with you... I want a pool with a real deep end... I can't swim on top of the water with all those fancy swimming moves (unless I wear floaties):lmao: ... I need it deep enough to hold my nose and dunk under for a long swim and with the looks of it I will be wading the whole time or just pushing the kids outa the way so I can take a turn on the slide!!:rotfl:

.. pushing the kids outa the way so I can take a turn on the slide!!:rotfl:

"Excuse me son...this is official Police business...step aside please!":rotfl2:

I wonder if it would help if you straped a flashing blue light to your head and screamed "WoooWOooWooo" as you were going up the stairs!!:lmao:

Ram...you're a trip!:thumbsup2

Oh now that's a good ideer. I'll get a sun visor and add on red and blue flashing strobes "police emergency get outa the way....wooo Wooo wooo". :lmao: Or I'll just use a boat horn that'll scare'em outa my way!!
:rolleyes1

I dont know how it works in PA but most people dont pay any attention to all those lights, they usually wake up when I blow the paint off their trunk with the Federal "Q" siren though. :lmao:

The air horn or the push bumper work well here... :rotfl: the lights and siren gives them something to tell their kids to look at.. "Hey kids, Look the Nice Police Man behind us showing you his pretty lights. Aint that nice of him?"
