So when you pack this little bag in your carry on, does it all have to lay flat? Or can it be full full? Also, I'm assuming that I cannot carry anything 3 oz or smaller in my purse like lip gel and hand lotion? It all HAS to be in this bag? I can take it all out once we get thru security but just checking...

I pack mine full full and have never had a problem.

Cool ;) I have like those Tide liquid packs that are flat so I have stuff layered in the bag and didn't know if they'd have a fit over that or not...

It says that the bottles have to "fit comfortably".

I've filled the bag very full and never had the bottles complain about being uncomfortable.

As long as you can close the bag, you are fine.

And yes, you can take them out of the baggie once you are past security.

The TSA's terminology is "fits comfortably" in the baggie. What this means in practice is "Lets us read the labels and won't pop open if we turn it upside down to read a label."

If you put a flat pack like detergent in, just be sure that the smaller items are turned face-out.

It does not matter what the content is (unless it is something flammable per the FAA prohibited list, such as Lysol spray) -- if they read the label they are normally looking for a capacity marker, especially on things like shaving cream, where the design of the package makes it look like it holds more than 3 oz. Technically, they can refuse to let you take any container that is not marked to show the maximum capacity, though these days they rarely invoke that option.

Just FYI, things on the FAA flammable prohibited list are not allowed in carryon OR checked bags. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#9

I have always assumed that it needs to lay flat, and pack it accordingly.

I also remember that each person traveling with a ticket gets a baggie allotted to them, and since DS doesn't need much in the way of lip gloss and such, "his" bag gets my stuff in it as well. :)

But in reviewing the pages (can't get to tsa.gov by typing it in, but googling tsa and 311 together gets me there) I see nothing seems to be said about it (other than the pictures). Hmm.

Oh wow, no aerosal...I have a small 3 oz can of hair spray...do you think they'll take it? Dang!

If you check out the link provided, you'll see it says "except for personal care or toiletries in limited quantities". Which basically means - if you spray it onto your body (or hair) and it is a small quantity, you are fine.

Lysol (which is not sprayed, by most people, onto your body) is not allowed.

Jez, you ask one stupid question and no one lets you forget it. :rolleyes1 :rotfl: :rotfl:

SORRY! :hippie: I didn't actually remember you asking a question in regards to that (stupid or not).

I was just trying to preemptively stop someone from posting "But, *I* spray lysol on myself all the time".:grouphug:

LMAO!!!! Cool, I'll take my hair spray then. :rotfl:

Don't be silly. I wouldn't expect you to remember with all the posts on this thread. Besides Bavaria set me straight. My stupid argument was that it was considered a toiletry since I would be using it to spray in the bathroom after using the bathroom. Didn't fly with Bavaria and I'm sure it won't fly with the TSA. :rotfl:

I love this Board. Ask a question and get a straight answer, whether it's what you want to hear or not. I'd rather have a DIS friend set me straight than be embarassed at the airport. :grouphug:

It doesn't need to lay flat. Mine usually has about 10-12 items in it, depending on size. The zip top closes easily (no chance of it bursting open). I don't arrange mine so anyone can particularly read anything. I go through airport security about 4-6+ times a month and rarely do they closely inspect the bag closely.

Yes, you can take items out after you clear security. Just don't forget to put them back in for the trip back home.

Oh, trust me my Grumpy friend, I won't let you forget it! :rotfl:

Actually, you asked, we answered, you said thank you for the enlightenment, and away you went.

I remember answering that very same question many times here and linking to the official documentation from various sources and still being told that I was an EPH for daring to say that it wasn't permitted.

Hairspray in a pump bottle is not an issue. Do they still sell aerosol hairspray? All that I can envision is that old lady hairspray from the 1950's in aerosol containers. (With apologies to any old ladies or anyone from the 1950's!)

Oh, yes, it's still sold, and it has come a long way since Aquanet, LOL. (Though for stage/sport performance, Aquanet is still the gold standard. That stuff is washable shellack; NOTHING escapes it! Very useful when you're doing back handsprings or double Axels.)

Newer aerosol hairsprays are microlized, just like aerosol sunscreens. They work very well and still feel soft if you don't overdo it.

The tiny travel cans of aerosol hairspray are OK in the 3-1-1 baggie, I take mine all the time.

They may be advertised as safe for air travel, but they don't meet the TSA rules. They likely would not be allowed - they aren't designed to be sprayed onto your body.

ETA - It doesn't actually say it is an aerosol spray. If it is a pump spray, it is fine.

This is what I bought instead. ;) Saw them in the Yankee Candle store when I was shopping for Christmas.

Crash: They are actually a pump spray. I've seen the same thing for hand sanitizers, so I'm thinking I'll be okay. I'll just pack it in my 3-1-1 and if the TSA disagrees, I'll just get rid of it at the airport. ;)

With a pump spray, you should be fine. I googled them after I posted (yes, I know, should have done it before), and I would think you would be fine. Of course, I doubt that saying "But, Crashbb told me they were okay" is going to get you anywhere with the TSA...
