2nd use year

Confused says it all. I had two contracts with different UYs and had a hard time keeping track of them. I am sure someone will post that it is no problem but ended up selling one contract.

Thinking on purchasing BWV on a diff use year....any downsides to this?:confused3

it means you are not "adding on" to your membership. instead you are buying a completely separate membership...so it's like you are 2 different people/owners, in a sense.

you have 2 banking deadlines to keep track of. if you are waitlisting one reservation at 7 months out (or 11 months if both contracts have the same home resort), you can have 2 waitlists for each contract. you cannot pool points from both contracts to book a reservation without transferring pts from one contract to the other...you would generally book 3 nights with one contract and 4 nights with the other and ask MS to link the separate reservations.

it takes more work, but it can be a benefit if you are very organized and have a plan for what you are trying to accomplish. IMO 2 different UYs probably works best if you intend to use the contracts completely separately - such as if i had an OKW contract with an oct UY to book OKW for november stays every other year and then bought a BCV contract with a feb UY to book march stays at BCV every other year.

Two different UY are, essentially, two different memberships. The impacts include:
  • You can't pool the points together. While multiple contracts with the same UY act as one large pool of points -- this is not the case with different UY. If you needed points from both memberships to complete a given reservation, you would need to book two separate reservations, one from each UY, and ask to have the reservations linked. Alternatively, you could use your "one transfer annually" to move points from one membership to the other to create a common pool of points.
  • Each membership could purchase the "24-one-time-use-points" if needed each year. (This could be an advantage if you use one-time-use-points frequently?)
  • Each membership has its own banking windows/deadlines. Be prepared to set up reminders on your calendars and simply deal with it.
  • Possible advantage: Each UY could be used for different travel windows to help minimize the risks associated with cancellations occurring late into the UY. I've often toyed with adding points at the Grand Cal using a different UY than my SSR points as my SoCal travel dates are generally Spring/Summer and my Florida travel dates are Fall/Winter.
  • Multiple memberships = more waitlists! Each membership may have 2 waitlists running concurrently.
Good luck in your research and deliberations.

We have 2 UY's and I wouldn't do it unless you really have a good reason. Life is tough enough without adding additional complications and extra work.

We bought our first UY contract years ago before we really knew what a UY was. Our 25 other contracts all have/had our second preferred UY.

I have several engineering degrees and still managed to screw up planning and calculating points available with our contracts with 2 different use years. Although we have the added complication that we have 2 different resorts as well. It's confusing sometimes! I invited the whole family on a trip only to realise we didn't have the points I thought we had. Ugh! If you have patience and time available, I would hold out for a contract with your current use year and save yourself some future headaches.

We have 4 use years due to resale contracts we have purchased with different use years. And 7 resorts. Doing it online makes it seem relatively easy to track. The biggest downside is thst online if I want to combine points from two diff use years I need to make two separate reservations even if it is a continuation of the same stay st the same resort. If you call CS they can do it easily. I usually prefer to do it myself. I do like the email reminders about banking. We almost lost almost 300 points one year because I was a month late on banking. However the CS rep let me put those points toward an RCI reservation.
