I have a res with National for Sept. My friend and I will arrrive on Sat. She will pay additional on my res to be second driver. I am an EC member therefore I have never paid for my sons or husband to drive. My son will be arriving on Wed eve. How can I have him on the res. so that he can drive the remainder of the week? I am going to call National but thought someone else might have run across this problem before. Will they accept a copy of his drivers lic.? Do I even need that since he is family and usually drives without charge? Thanks for any help.

If your son resides with you and has the same last name, then you don't need to do anything, he is automatically covered.

If he doesn't live with you or have the same last name, you may need a copy of his driver license, and possibly some documentation showing your relation (I've never rented a car, so this may be a completely "left field" guess)

Thanks Gail. My son lives in Manhattan but his driver's license still has our address. I forgot about the automatic coverage with EC. I remember now that last trip they didn't want my husband's license. Do you think I should mention anything at the EC booth or just let it go?

Considering what you just told me about DS's license, I would just let it go.

Anyone ever rent from Nat'l with a 2nd driver under 25? My sister needs her son (21, same last name and address) as a 2nd driver in August. She was told that, even with EA, any driver under 25 would be an extra $7.00 per day - Alamo and Dollar said 21 yo 2nd driver would be 20.- 25.- extra per day ! Yikes - anyone have any advice or experience with young drivers?

Nat'l also says 2nd driver must have major credit card in their own name - would a credit card with his name on it be accepted if it was actually a 2nd card on his mom's account (not the card used to rent the car)- anyone know how carefully they check this out?
TIA ~!

Actually the perday fee is higher than 7.00 for under 25. Here is an excerpt from the web site.

Age Requirement

Young Renter: Non-Commercial Account

Minimum age rental requirement at most locations is 21. Some locations require a minimum age of 25 (except for the State of New York where the minimum age is 18). All customers under age 25 renting at Corporate locations will be charged a standard additional daily fee of $25.00 (except in New York the fee is up to $70.82 and Boston the fee is $37.00). All Young Renters and Young Renter Additional Drivers must have a major credit card and a valid drivers license. Young renters can use discounts and coupons except in the state of New York. Young renters can only rent economy cars through full size cars.

The full set of rules can be found on the National website under Emerald Club.

The credit card must have his name on it, it would not matter if it is his Mom's account as long as his name is on it.

I would be wise to call the Emerald Club's number and ask these questions. The web site is pretty vague in all reality. Each location can have their own set of rules.

Has anyone done this with a relative who does not live with you/or has different last name.

We will be going in October and there are 4 families...ours, my 2 sisters' families and DH's brothers'. We plan on renting 2 minivans, but we will be arriving at the airport at different times. So 2 of us will do the rentals, but we probably will want 2 add'l drivers who won't be there at the time we are renting.

Any advice?

National would not cover my boyfriend on my account since we were not married. I would suggest that the only way to be 100% sure you are covered is to contact your rental car company.

I would plan on paying for those extra drivers. While some of the wording is vague, it is pretty explicit on relatives. Additional drivers have to be present, they have to show a license and credit card.

They do cover domestic partners of the opposite genders.

On our last trip, my father booked a car through National. My parents were arriving at MCO in the morning and we were arriving in the afternoon. We were hoping that my dad could pick up the car, check in to the hotel, then pick us up at the airport. At that time, we figured my husband could go to National's counter and add his name to my dad's reservation and pay whatever extra charge there is for an additional driver. I'm glad I called ahead because National said that we couldn't do this. Both drivers had to be at the National counter at the time the car is picked up. Maybe this is because we're not EA members?

No, it is because at the beginning of the rental all drivers need to be present.

Gail,
While National's official policy is to cover domestic partners of any gender, in real life...... I was told he would not be covered. This was not a risk we wanted to take since at that point if they had documented in the system what they told me we could have had a real fight on our hands. Just not worth it to me.. so only I drove.

Also, while most of the things said on this board relate to Orlando and/or Tampa if you are renting someplace else be sure to VERIFY! Some rental car locations are franchises and they can and do have some very different rules.

I think I will most definitely print out the rules and show them should I have a problem.

Gail,
The rental car companies allow local franchises to choose to implement rules different from the national ones. I once had a huge fight with Hertz that wound up involving my corporate office and Hertz corporate office. We lost. The franchise could do what it wanted! (which meant my employee who was 24 was stranded in the middle of nowhere, USA without a car)

The corporate travel investigated and discovered that franchises don't sign an agreement that actually requires them to agree 100% with the national policies.

You generally only get this in tiny little towns. (where the cars are yet another adventure, I once had a Ford Mustang that the owner's son drove when it was not rented, talk about trashed!)

Different car companies have different rules about two drivers. I rented from L&M in December. My nephew was joining me later in the day and was going to be the second driver (we were paying extra for this of course). I got the car when I arrived early in the day and all he had to do was go to the counter with me when he arrived later and they added him to the contract. I had called the company weeks before to find out if they allowed this and they had no problems with it.

Carol, you are so right about this. However, National at MCO is a corporate location.
I guess your story indicates we should definitely call the location and find out their rules and why they have the disclaimer that different locations require different things.
I will say, however, that the employees at the MCO location are NOT the sharpest knives in the drawer. But, that is another story for another time. :)

After reading this, I think I need to check directly with National at MCO for the answer to my question - I have been given 3 different answers so far regarding 2nd driver under 25 when primary driver is EA member - mother and son - same name, same address. First I was told $20 a day - then $7 a day - yesterday I called and was told $10 a day at MCO !!
That must be what you are talking about, different locations/franchises being able to charge differently.

Does anyone know the # for National at MCO - I would want to talk directly to a supervisor and not just the people who take the reservations.

The number is on the website, just click on Locations and follow the prompts from there.
