C.Ann

Sorry, I feel that was totally un-waranted and insensitive of her doctor to do that. Doesn't he/she know that by doing that the patient would presume the worst?

I know it is not easy, but both DD and you should not jump to any conclusions until the test results come back.

I will say prayers that everything will be well.

{{{HUGS}}} to DD and you.

Although it is not too commen, it does occur. It is a great thing that she got it checked out. I do have to say, that the doctor giving her a card for a surgeon does not indicate anything. My 27 yo SIL found a lump 2 weeks ago, did the mammogram and ultrasound, and rather than a needle biopsy, they are going to do surgery to extract and test. So, there is a good chance that is what it is for.

(((Hugs to you and dd)))

They are doing surgery because needle biopsy's do not get all the info that the dr. needs, and the tissue could be too dense to get an accurate sample..

C. Ann, don't panic. It's very common to get recommended to a surgeon, or at least with the people I know. They will talk about the different things that may need to be done, usually it's the biospy. A surgeon does that. If they feel it's warranted, they will take a biopsy, and they take the whole lump out when they do that.

In most cases, everything is fine.

C.Ann, my friend just went through this and she's 34, just last week she had a lumpectomy , fortunately her was benign . Praying for the same to be the case of your DD.

C. Ann - Believe me I know where you are coming from. I have been through the exact same thing. I found a lump when I was 28. I am now 31. My dr. checked it and then had me go for a mammogram and ultrasound. The radiology dept wouldn't do a mammogram on me - I forget the reasons why, but something to do with my age and the tissue. They did the ultrasound and the doc reading it assured me that is was a fibroid adnoma. My doc sent me to a breast surgeon anyways and he wanted to remove the lump and send it for biopsy. Turned out it was a fibroid adnoma. But I sure was worried and upset.

Hugs and prayers for you and your DD. Please keep us updated and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Melinda

Oh I am sorry. I know how much you have on your plate right now. When my doctor discovered a lump she had them do a mammogram and an ultrasound which found nothing. She sent me to a surgeon anyway - just in case.

I pray it is nothing.

I found a lump around age 28 and went for a mammogram and ultrasound. Turned out I have fibrocystic disease, which many women in my family have. This past summer I felt a large one and got scared (my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years ago). Turned out to be a large cyst, they can tell on the ultrasound that it was just fluid and not solid. It has since gone away. I'll keep you and your daughter in my thoughts.

I had a lump this past summer and I had to get it out even though it was benign. The doctor probably gave her the names of surgeons just in case she had to get hers out.
I had a biopsy done when I went in for an Ultra Sound...that same day. Then I saw the surgeon.

I'll keep your DD in my prayers that her lump is benign too..

C. Ann,

{{HUGS}} to you. I know how you are feeling.
This past summer my 19 year old DD found a lump in her breast. She was able to see the gyne very quickly. He was very thorough, very sympathetic, reassuring AND he gave us the name of a breast surgeon. It is not always because that surgery is the next step, it is also to get a second opinion.
Ann had an ultrasound, but it was inconclusive. All it showed was the breast tissue. They knew that it was NOT a fluid filled cyst though because it would have shown up black on the ultrasound.
We then saw the surgeon he examined Ann and assured us that this was a lump, but that it was nothing to worry about. No surgery was needed. Ann asked how he knew that and he told her that a malignant tumor felt very different than what he was feeling. He will see her again when she is home on break to reassess the lump. If it has gotten bigger or is causing her discomfort he will consider removing it then. If not, then it may stay there forever! :eek:
I know that it is upsetting, but the dr is just doing his/her job and is trying to see that she has the best care.

Hang in there...I know that it will be a nerve racking next few weeks - I pray that you get the same answer that we did...

{{{Hugs}}} You and your DD are in my prayers. At her age, it is statistically more likely that it will be nothing, but it may take a few more procedures to determine that for sure since young women typically have denser breasts.

Try not to get too worried. Even if it needs to be removed (or if it is found to be cancer) that doesn't mean she won't be fine. Don't borrow trouble. I know, that is easier said than done, and they always seem to make you wait a few days so you'll have plenty of time to worry. :rolleyes:

In the coming days, if you or your daughter need someone to talk to, I'd be glad to act as a shoulder to lean on. But, I'm hoping you will have fantastic news and won't need me. I've known lots of young girls who have survived breast cancer or found lumps that were benign. It happens. The great news is that the success rate is great now-days.

By the way, it is my understanding that younger women have denser breast tissue. That is why mammograms sometimes aren't very effective for them.

I was 40 when they found out I had breast cancer, but I am doing great! I'm a one-year survivor and consider myself cancer-free. Hang in there. I'll keep you in my prayers.

MerryPoppins, congratulations on being a cancer survivor. My mom is too. It's always wonderful to hear of someone beating that awful disease.

C. Ann, I had a lump about 2 years ago. My doctor recommended me to a surgeon. He did a biopsy and it was benign. My OB-BYN recommended that I have it removed and the surgeon and radiologist did not. I wish I had had it removed. It would've been nice to be rid of it.

I hope it turns out to be benign for your daughter. I'll keep you and her in my prayers.

((((((((((C.Ann))))))))))))

I'll keep your daughter in my prayers. I know the fright! When I was 34, not long after I had given birth to DS, I had a routine mammo and they found a lump. I had surgery and they removed it. It turned out to be benign even though the surgeon said when he saw it, he couldn't tell and waited for pathology. Normally, he can tell what it is. Gee...
The two weeks between seeing the surgeon and having the actual surgery was the worst time of my life!

C. Ann, I wasn't around much yesterday but I wanted to say that you and your DD are in my thoughts and prayers. Try not to think of the worst and I pray that this will turn out to be "nothing" for your DD. Hang in there {{hugs}}

C.Ann, your daughter and you are both in my prayers. Hoping all goes well, my very best wishes for her. Please update us when you can. {{Hugs}}
