My 12 year old broke his distal radius while trying out for soccer at school. He has a waterproof cast on and is not limited in any activity. I have seen others post something similar has happened, but not how things went as a update!
He is not in pain anymore, cast is a short arm cast. There may be a possibility of it coming off ahead of the trip, BUT there are no opening yet.
So Doc says ride whatever rides you want, swim, have fun!
Will Disney let him on rides? The one post I saw that was a no had a long arm cast, which is more challenging for sure.
Can Characters sign his cast?

Trying to keep his spirits up that everything will be fine........

I broke my humerus about 30 days before going to WDW. The break was just below the shoulder ball. There was no cast. Just a sling. Cast members did not question me before boarding.

I think I did all of the attractions as usual. I think Dinosaur was possibly the hardest on me. The jostling was hard to handle with only one hand.

I was worried about people bumping into me since my arm was just in a sling. That wasn't a problem.

I did have a conversation with a CM on the wisdom of challenging Hercules to an arm wrestling contest.

We went when my son had a cast on above his elbow. He went on all rides. The characters did sign his cast and gave him a lot of extra attention.

On our very first day at the Magic Kingdom (two years ago). I severely sprained my ankle right there on Main Street USA. I just took a misstep and rolled my ankle right under me. I heard a pop and felt certain that I had a break or fracture. I went to get an x-ray (No break, no fracture) just a very severe sprain. The doctor in Orlando put a brace on it to give my ankle support. No one stopped or questioned me about getting on any of the rides. I was not using crutches like I should have. Perhaps they would have stopped me if I had been on crutches, I don't know. I had spent the money to be there and we had looked forward to it all year. I was determined to push thru the injury and have a good time. I hope it all works out well for your son & family. Good luck & fun. My eight-year-old just broke her distal radius and growth plate, and we're 33 days out! Her cast comes off the week of our trip, and the doctor said it shouldn't need to go back on. Kids heal so quickly. If it does, though, he said the characters can sign it and she should be able to ride everything. The ER doctor said they get a lot of questions about Disney. :) I know it's not Disney, but we're going to Six Flags every day this long weekend, so I will let you know if any of the coasters there bother her (sounds like they're in the same kind of cast). Try not to worry too much, though! As long as he's not in pain, it will probably make for a neat memory.

Can I just pop in and say how awesome it is that the top part of your sprain bruise kind of looks like the Castle? :rolleyes1

Oh bummer. Glad to hear the doctor said he can still ride everything, that's great. Hope you have a great trip, despite the cast!

Yes to signing the cast - I wish I had pictures of the purple one my niece had on when we went many years ago.............but when I found it 10 years later in her closet it STUNK so bad that I had to throw it out :)

My daughter had a broken leg on one of our trips. When she initially broke it, the doctor thought the cast would be off in time for our trip, but it didn't work out that way. I guess it wasn't healing as quickly as he thought. So she had a cast and a boot. The bad thing was that we were staying at Beach Club specifically for her to swim in Stormalong Bay! I was able to get a waterproof cover, so she swam twice. She didn't get the full experience of the pool, but it was better than nothing.

The good news is that the CMs and characters made a BIG deal of her injury and treated her so great. She definitely rode everything she wanted to ride with no problem.

Honestly, I know this is not ideal, but I think it's going to be fine. The biggest worry that popped into my mind is the heat. In the heat, a cast could get awfully uncomfortable. I think you're not supposed to stick anything down into the cast, but we had a couple of things my daughter could use to scratch her leg when itches got unbearable.

Also, we absolutely had characters sign her cast. Still have it as a keepsake.

Have a great trip!

Yes it does, or kinda like Mickey in his sorcerers hat & robe. Kinda like finding shapes in the clouds.

One note on having the Cast Members sign the cast (crack myself up!) - before you go, if your son still has the cast on, ask the doctor where the cast will be cut. Have him/her mark it on the cast. That way, you can have the characters sign in between the marks so a signature is not cut in two.

Guests can ride the attractions with casts, no big deal at all. Your son will be able to get from the loading platform to the ride vehicle so nothing really to worry about. Heck, I rode lots of things with a broken neck and neck brace and never had a word mentioned to me.

From a PT standpoint, NO riding with neck braces :)

Bummer!!
They said he could get it off before we go (possibly), BUT there are no openings! And I am in a sticky spot because ALL of my vacation time is tied up in this trip, same with my husband! My mom normally takes him to appts but she has her knee replaced next week.
He is thinking it may work out in his favor to get some extra attention, especially since the PA said he could go in Typhoon Lagoon with his cast.
I had read another post that a girl couldn't ride rollercoasters with a cast-but it seemed to be a shoulder level one, may be harder to be mobile and hold on with.

Can't believe how many kiddos break something just before their trips!

I didn't say I rode the thrill rides with a neck brace - I said I rode lots of things :)

But, I still have the broken neck but have been cleared to ride anything I want. Breaks do heal over time :)

I feel your pain. My DS-13 just broke his arm and we leave in 12 days. We see ortho this week to find out the plan. It's always something around here!

You are correct! Glad it wasn't thrill rides :)

Oh no!! I hope he feels a little better! My son has been feeling pretty good, although he was outside playing with friends yesterday and realized jumping really hurts!
