:)

The best non-prescription flea stuff I have ever tried is Spot-On by Biospot. It WORKS. It's the same stuff that's in K-9 Advantix, but costs about $16-18 for a 3-month supply. I use it on the cats too. (The cat formula!) I get mine at Petco.

Just be careful about what you buy. Research it first. There have been cases of toxicity and death related to some flea products over the past few years, especially in small animals. You may be able to get the "good stuff" cheaper via a catalog, not sure.

Whatever you use, start with a good flea bath. Follow directions on the bottle of flea shampoo in regards to repeating. (There may be unhatched eggs hiding that can hatch after the bath.) Use a flea comb to get flea residual off.

The only thing that seems to work well for us is Frontline. I buy it at Pet Sense for $39 for a three month supply.

I hate using flea meds like frontline because I feel like they poison dogs. Dawn dish soap is amazing for killing fleas, it has to be the original dawn soap. Lather your dog really good around his neck first, this way no fleas climb up his head and into his ears. After the neck is soaped up, lather the whole body, especially underarms, and let it sit for about 10 minutes then rinse. It suffocates and kills the fleas.

We use some "environmentally friendly" frontline equivelent that I buy at Pet Smart. But when we used it yesterday, Rico vomitted both times he ate. Not sure if it's related, but it stinks for the first few days! Yuck!

That sounds great!!! I wonder if you put just a little in a spray bottle with water if it would keep other bugs off them? I have heard that Listerine works for skeeters & such. I usually put a fabric softner on each dog while camping too.:goodvibes

We use Program. He has zero fleas, it is a once a month pill. Our vet prescribed it

Here is a link to an excellent site that gives the info on most all of the available flea treatments out there:

I personally use Advantage. I used the Hartz product once and it cost me over $600 in vet bills from the chemical burn on my dog's neck. Hartz immediately reimbursed me for my vet bills but my dog was traumatized from the pain. Very terrible for my little Gromit!

I was interested in Program, because my dog FLIPS when he gets his frontline. My problem with Program is that it's ONLY a flea preventive, whereas frontline also guards against ticks. We live inan area where there are TONS of dear, so I need the tick preventive as well to guard against lyme disease. I'm going to stick with my frontline, the dog will just have to deal.....

I always used a Zodiac brand flea collar on Ted. He never had fleas (and he had A LOT of fur...Springer Spaniel so a thick double coat!) and he never had a problem with any reactions.

We have used Program and Advantage. Both are fantastic. I would never go back to the store products again. Advantage totally kills the fleas on the animal imediatly, Program disrupts their breeding cycle. What we did was get advantage for a month and then leave them on Program. We haven't seen a flea in over five years so right now they are all on nothing. If we had a problem I'd go and get the advantage and do a few months of Program. It seems like a lot of money, but they are so effective it doesn't have to be an on going thing if you are lucky.

You have to think that when I grew up in the 80s fleas were a real problem. Even our first apartment we just couldn't ever totally get rid of them in the mid 90s before these products were introduced. The dog always came back from the Kennel full of fleas, they were out in our grass, and it was part of animal ownership. Since these products have come out I think there has been a drastic fall in fleas in general. We have a dog that goes outside, and two cats that roam the neighbourhood and we haven't seen a flea in years. The last time was when I got my mom two kittens that came with fleas and that was in 2002. There is no way there would have been a seven year stretch without fleas when I was growing up, and I think most of that can be attributed to more effective flea control products in use by a lot of the pet owning population.

I love Frontline. Our old dog got infested once, I mean completely covered head to toe in fleas and flea waste. Gave her Frontline and she was completely flee-free in a couple of days and they never, ever came back. It actually prevents fleas for 3 months, but ticks for only one month which is why I have to use it more frequently in the summer.

We use Revolution since it is flea, tick and heartworm.

For the love of all things pet related..don't use any over the counter stuff from Walmart! I work for a vet and I can't tell you how many animals have had severe reactions to that junk.

Check online and go with a brand name like Frontline or Advantage.
Advantage just kills fleas, Frontline kills fleas, flea eggs, ticks and even biting lice.

Frontline..... it works!

Don't try to save by using something that could cause real problems, and doesn't even work as well.

Try the Frontline!

PS: Our dog is a black Lab. Labs are water dogs who have an oily grease in their fur.... I actually use the Dawn on him for that reason.... And, it works too.
