I was told you could book 499 days in advance only.

Yep - 499 days from your departure date, and you can only book that by phone (not online)

499 days from 10/1/10 will be May 20. Note that the 499 days is in advance of your departure date, not your arrival.

As others have pointed out, you can make reservations 499 days out (departure) on the phone (no web ressies), but the rate quoted when you make said reservation is not guaranteed. Disney releases rates once a year, usually in the July/August time frame. Once the rares are released, your reservation will be adjusted to the new rate.

So, as you can see the reservations CM was correct, you can't get a reservation with a 2010 rate until July - but by then all the sites may be booked by folks who don;t care what it costs.
