Does taking Highway 210 to Freeway 57(orange freeway) take longer or shorter than taking 5? Thanks

It's about 19-20 more miles but can take less time if traffic on I5 is really bad or more time if there's a hang-up on 210. If you have a smart phone, take a break in Santa Clarita and check the traffic maps before making the final decision. We often take 210 to 57, but when we went down a week and a half ago we noticed there were reports of an accident and a slowdown on 210 so we stuck to the 5. On the way home mid-afternoon several days later though, 57 to 210 to 5 was a breeze.

It really depends on traffic. If there is traffic on I-5, the 210 route is faster.

For us, we prefer the 605 South -> 91 East -> I-5 South. And always get in the HOV lanes asap.

What is HOV?

HOV => High Occupancy Vehicles - carpool lanes, known as "diamond lanes" 'round these parts back in the day

They are not to be confused with:

HOT => High Occupancy/Toll - toll lanes, but carpool lanes also, since you don't pay (at least in this area) if you have enough occupants in the vehicle

However, they are and will be confused, since , in the past year or so, some HOV lanes in the area have been converted to HOT lanes

210 east usually has bad late-afternoon commute traffic.
it has some easy bathroom/food stops.

Yikes, sounds confusing! I think my strategy should be to stay in the centre lanes! Lol! We don't have anything remotely like this where I am from! Its no wonder I am so nervous about our drive to SoCal!!

Similarly, depending on how far the traffic extends on the I-5 South, you can also do 710 South -> 91 East -> I-5 South.

The simplest route is to just stay on 5 all the way, which is the shortest distance although often not the shortest time. An infrequent visitor should just take the simple route, rather than being "nervous" about finding the optimal route. I drove 5 for decades, and only recently started using a "zig-zag" route.

Note: HOV (carpool) lanes have marked entry/exit zones, so do not cross the double line.

Thanks for the info! I had no idea. And I think you are totally right, we will stick to the 5!
