DAY 18 - Downtown Disney - Mama Melrose with Fantasmic!

I woke up this morning, with a cold and sore throat. :scared1:
This is most unusual, since I have a flu jab each year and rarely have a runny nose. Not feeling too good, we decided to have any easy day. This started off at OKW marina, where we caught the boat to DTD.

After two weeks, this was the first time of using the ferry and was surprised what a pleasant journey it was. Fifteen minutes later, we got off the boat and had a stroll around the various shops.

We popped into EOS for a snack and also to hook up to the free wifi.
I did not eat anything, as I was still feeling rough. I found out that there is a circular route ferry that operates at DTD with three stops (Market Place – West Side – Pleasure Island).

We got the ferry back to OKW and returned to our room. Emma and Sue went to the small pool, while I had a sleep. I joined them both at the pool after an hour or so. Tonight of all nights we had an ADR which I was looking forward to for a long time, Mama Melrose with Fantasmic ticket included. As we parked the car ready to board the tram, the rain started. We have been visiting Orlando since 1993, seen tropical storms and this was one to be remembered. We managed to shelter under the canopy of the bag check for a while and then made a dash to the main entrance.

By this time, the rain was falling faster than it could drain and large pools were quickly forming, in places, as high as the kerb. We all had ponchos, but they were no match for this rain storm. Many people had given up trying to stay dry, and resorted to paddling their way home.

We arrived at Momma Melrose and the check in area, was heaving with people trying to shelter. Check-in was quick and surprisingly, we were shown to our table within 10 minutes.

Our server talked us through the menu – which is three courses and then we were ready to order.

Emma: Mama’s Anti-Pasta (shared) + Spicy Italian Sausage + Mama’s Tiramisu + Diet Coke
Sue: Bruschetta + Grilled Chicken Flatbread + Mama’s Tiramisu + Diet Coke
Nigel: Mama’s Anti-Pasta (shared) + Chicken Pipette + Mama’s Tiramisu + Diet Coke

The Tiramisu was a little disappointing for an Italian restaurant, since it was just Tiramisu flavoured ice cream over espresso with a biscuit.

Our server supplied a ticket, to by-pass the regular entrance into Fantasmic!, this was to the right of Beauty and the Beast show. We arrived in Fantasmic! theatre approx 45 minutes before start time. An area to the right is reserved for people using the Fantasmic! dining package, and this filled rather quickly. A Mexican wave formed around the theatre and got quite impressive after a few failed runs. The show started on time, and as usual, was over too quickly.
We had a quick exit after the show, caught a tram just as it was leaving and was back at OKW within 20 minutes of the show ending. Straight to bed for me – not even time for a trippie update! :sad2:

RETURN TO TRIP INDEX

Wow, your photos of the rain are amazing, they bring back fond memories of Tropical Storm Fay a few years ago ;) I love your pics from Mama Melrose, I love Italian food and we've made an ADR for our first visit there, though I hope the Tiramisu isn't too bad as it's my fave dessert (I love the one at Tutto Italia)

Another fab day, thanks for sharing, I hope you're feeling better for the next installment :thumbsup2

Tutto was our favourite also.........you will see that soon :goodvibes

Are you doing a trippie for food & wine fest ?

Wow that rain looks like so much fun! Reminds me of the time we had a storm and we missed it shopping in Florida Mall!

Another great update :thumbsup2

I remember having rain like that coming back from Universal Studios one time - I ended up taking my shoes off and just wading through - what more can you do :confused3 :rotfl2:

Looking forward to reading more :goodvibes

Wow - that rain is just immense :scared1:

Glad you all still got to enjoy your meal and Fantasmic though :thumbsup2

amazing piccies of the rain, jeez that was torrential

Another fantastic update and fab photos of the rain.
Can you book the fantasmic dinner package on the dining plan and if so how many table service credits does it cost?
Thanks for a great trip report.

We were there during TS Fay as well!

Have been to MM a couple of times - the sausage pasta dish looks good - do u think they would leave out the sausage for a veggie? DD wasnt keen on the cheese flatbreads last time - so we were thinking of giving Hollywood and Vine another shot for the FP but maybe not after seeing that pasta at MM

We had a good server who explained each item on the menu. I don't think leaving the sausage out would be a problem. I think the items are individually cooked and plated with each order :goodvibes

Thanks - I have been really enjoying reading your trip report - don't often venture onto the trip report boards but yours looked really interesting because of all the food photos and also because we're considering staying at OKW next time.

I saw pics of your room on day 3 - is that a studio? If so did you think it was large enough for the 3 of you? - (we are also a party of 3 with my DD a similar age) Posts on the resorts board highly recommend the 1 bedroom apt. but for a 2 week stay it's another £600 - whew! - and we won't use the cooking or laundry facilities.

Yes - It was a studio, and was more than big enough for all 3 of us.
Only a microwave - toaster - coffee maker and fridge. We were in building 21 and the laundry facility is located at the small quiet pool area which is between buildings 19 & 20.
We always take enough clothes to last the 3 weeks without having to use the laundry, but that will have to change for next year, as Virgin have halved their allowance for economy :headache:
Having stayed at All Stars for the past 5 years (as a family of 3), this room seemed large, plus you have a balcony and it is a lot quieter. Will more than likely book OKW again with DDP for next year :goodvibes

Great day, though sorry to hear that you were not feeling great. :(

You're pictures of the rain are amazing. :)
