I have 250 points VWL and was going to try and add-on at BCV but guide suggested long term better to wait as I have a son and/or I may like AKV or next resort-CRV? since those would give me an extra 15 years.

I have a 6 year old and figured that made sense but its not like its going to get easier in the future to book at BCV. And as he gets older being near Epcot and MGM might be better.

Any ideas?

Buy where you want to stay. 2042 is 35 years away, will it matter to you that far out? It might, might not.....if BCV is what you want, then buy there.

If I am still alive in 2057 (I should be 107), I probably wouldn't even care anymore.

For us, it matters, and I am buying in increments so each of our children will have Disney vacations for themselves and their children in years to come. My eldest is 18 and youngest is 10. They all know we are doing this for everyone, so in our particular case, it does make a difference. If that is not an issue, do pick the resort you want to be staying at.

I think the 15 years for AKV and 12 years for SSR will become more important at some point down the road...maybe 10 years or so? Right now, people can still enjoy decades of DVC ownership at any of the resorts, and 35 years might actually be more appealing to those who don't want to saddle their heirs with maintenance fees, etc.

jcf...I'd buy where you want to stay...BCV. It's a small resort and who wants to spend years of worrying about 7 month availability and waitlists? But that's just me...YMMV. :)

We think the 2057 RTU is important now assuming you want to pass to your kids and if they have kids then your grandkids would have a real benefit as well

We purchased 300 (163/137) at SSR with an eye to the 2054 RTU as opposed to adding more at BCV

Cheers

We will add on at BCV sometime because of this factor. But we bought SSR for the longer contract first and AKV for the even longer contract and tapestry;) . But we are only 23 and 21 and are just starting our lives together, so we can use the extra years.

As far as I am concerned, "where I want to stay" is Disney World. If that is at SSR, AKV, BCV or some future resort, I am happy (no, I can't stay anywhere, but I can stay in any DVC resort). I am relatively young, and I will probably outlive my SSR contract. There is no way I'd give up 12 (or now 15) years of ownership. WDW is where I want to stay. Which resort is just gravy.

Your guide is probably thinking that you already have a contract ending in 2042. Your 6 year old will be 41 then and probably have given you a few grandchildren to indoctrinate in the Disney way. It might be better to have a contract that would extend into the grandchildren's youths as well.

I have a SSR contract so for me owning at the older resorts is all about "owning where I want to stay". If BCV is a resort you must stay, and you're not worried about the future for children/grandchildren then go for it.

As for which location your 6 year old might like better in 5 or 6 years, well that's a grap shoot. He might really want to go on safaris or ride Expedition Everest a few dozen times per trip. Or he might get addicted to Disney Quest and want to be nearest Downtown Disney. Or he could be addicted to Tower of Terror & Test Track. Bottomline is wherever you stay in Disney, he'll have access to all those things. It's where you want to be that matters most.

I agree. Buy where YOU want to stay most.
If the expiration date is most imporatant to you, than you should invest the money and just keep waiting to buy at future resorts. The last one built before the reeper comes calling would have the latest expiration that you could still purchase. (I don't really believe or suggest that, but said it to illustrate my point.)

I would buy for YOURSELF, and if anything is leftover for the kids that's great.
Buying for the kids and grandkids is nice, but at somepoint they will be self sufficient and can buy for themselves.

-- Just my opinion... :)

We just bought a resale on Beach Club. I wonder if your guide makes a commission if you buy Beach Club? Just a thought. I would buy what I want.

Waiting to close on 150pts at WLV:cool1:

I struggled with the extra 12 years at SSR...at 86 per pt...

Finally i realized i love WL at xmas time....So thats where i
needed to buy...

Also i'll be about 70 when it expires....
I'm sure I'll have more NEWER points by then:lmao:

Well, in the first 15 years of DVC we've seen eight resorts built or announced.
Assuming and equal growth rate, that's potentially eight new resorts in the next 15 years and eight more during the last 15 years of a longer contract. I don't think it's possible to predict where you'll want to stay when your 6 year old is a teen.

I'm in my mid 30's. I think the extra years will matter very, very much to me in 25 years when I am 60 (and my contract still has about 20 years of use) when I decide to either:
1. Sell my contracts after a lifetime of use and have them still retain enough use and value to be somewhat attractive on the resale market. With inflaction, I'll probably get back what I paid initially.
2. Enjoy my retirement by spending extended amounts of time at Disney without children.
3. Rent my points annually and have another expense paid for each year with the income generated during my older-age.
4. Treat my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to Disney vacations each year so that they can create the same memories with their families that we created with ours.
5. Become a mini-philanthroper and pick a familiy per year to give young, struggling-to-make-ends meet couples at our church a trip they'll never forget with their tiny ones. Someone did this for us when DS was 2, and it was the best.

I think age is a player here. Someone 21 may make a different decision than someone who is 40.

Additionally, your committment to Disney - we bought primarily with the first ten-fifteen years of our kids lives in mind. I don't know if we will own ten years from now, much less still own when we retire.

Your feeling for how Disney will do over the long term. I've become less interested in Disney with the restaurant changes, and therefore more likely to sell when the kids get older.

Your intention of passing it along to your kids. I wouldn't want my kids to inherit something that comes with fees.

Not to me. I'll "only" be 70 in 2042, so I will hopefully still be able to use it, but who knows what WDW will be like by then or how often I will want to go. I'm sure I will let my kids use it for their family, but after I croak and/or 2042 rolls around, they can buy their own if they want it! That said, I will probably buy a small add-on for AKV or CRV (), so that will take me past 2042if I need/want it.

My plan was to buy where I wanted to stay now and purchace with them in mind in the future. Since my initial contract cannot be split and I have 4 kids, I decided that buying for them to inherit would not be the best idea. How would they agree over the use, who would be in charge, etc? Also, as DVC keeps expanding and my kids are young it makes since to wait and buy add ons in the future with an even longer term and in 4 separate contracts that I can give them later.

I'll only be 71 in 2042. I think I'm going to want to take a lot of trips w/grandkids to the world. My dad is nearly 70 and his favorite thing to do is spend time with his "herd" of 10 grandkids. We're guessing we'll end up with at least 10 and up to 40 grandchildren ourselves so maybe as 2054 approaches we'll need to look at more points at the Whatever Is Most Magical Today Villas :rotfl:

Hmmm...40 grandkids, 7 kids, 7 spouses, DH & Me...how many grand villas would we need? :scared1:
