2023 Veterans Day/Remembrance Day (November 11, 2023) thread. As we in the USA and around the world remember throughout the week our armed forces (both those currently serving and those who have served before), I would love to hear about any stories that Disboarders are willing to share about their service or one of their family members service. I feel sometimes veterans get overlooked by society and to me (and I'm sure many others agree) that is wrong. So I just want to thank all service members and their family members for their service and all the sacrifices they make (especially the things that go unnoticed). I am not a veteran but I have a number of family members that have served in the USA army and navy going back to colonial times. So, once again, thank you to all our service men and women and also thank you to all our military allies as well. :-)🪖🎖️🇺🇸🇬🇧🇨🇦🇪🇺🇦🇺🇳🇿🇯🇵🇰🇷🇮🇱🇺🇳🌺

I can trace back to my great-great-great grandfather Joseph Thomas for army service. He was a private in the Union Army during the Civil War. Unfortunately I have been unable to locate any photos of him. He contracted Tuberculosis while in the army and was invalided out in 1864, and he died rather young in 1884 leaving a wife and four kids. I have my great-great-great grandmother's application for his pension and the records from the Catholic home she had to send the children to for a time until the pension was granted.

My great-grandfather joined the army at 17 when the United States entered WWI. His father was a German immigrant, so my great-grandfather Harry spoke fluent German and was used as a translator for Germans captured by his regiment:

I remember him just a little because he died when I was four. I have a memory of him pulling a penny from 'my ear' and giving it to me.

And then my Poppy (my beloved grandfather Buck) was in the Navy during WWII. He was in some sea battles, but when I was doing the family history extensively back in the 90s and wanted to talk to him about his service he didn't want to discuss it. My grandmother told me he saw one of his friends get killed, and that's why he never liked to talk about it. I am trying to get his service records with my aunt's help:

My grandpa was imprisoned by the USA just for being a Japanese American. This man was snuffed out of his high school during his sophomore year and was transported to the "Relocation Camp" in Hunt Idaho. He worked hard and graduated high school top of his class. He then enrolled at the University of Detroit to start pre-med ...until he got drafted to fight for the country that mistrusted him. And he went. And fought bravely in the European Theatre. He met my grandma there and learned German. They came back and started a family in Michigan. And hence, here I am. I have nothing but the utmost respect for those who serve the country.

My dad enlisted in the Army during World War II. He was 31 at the time, so too old to be drafted. But Wars force changes, including taking older volunteers. And when he enlisted they discovered he was legally a German citizen. Another concession to War, he was sworn in on the spot as a U.S. Citizen and eventually sent to Germany to fight. But only after a training mishap where he almost drown. A troop carrier overturned off the coast of Charleston and everyone inside was dumped into the Atlantic. My mom says he talked very little about his War experience because it was so traumatic.
My FIL was career Air Force, did three tours in Vietnam.
I am thankful for everyone's service. Although that phrase is used so much that it doesn't seem to describe the sacrifice these people made in war time.

I hope all Disboarders remember their country's military and allies this weekend. Freedom is never free and sometimes the unfortunate price to preserve such freedom results in war. If you see a veteran this weekend, please thank them.

Thank you to all the Veterans here on the DIS and to all the family members of Service Members who sacrifice time with them and live through so much worry so they can take care of all of us.
