wow I didn't even realize it wasn't an actual Star Wars thing. I've seen the movies but my son is the one really into it. They made up new stuff instead of using things from the movies?
It was an intentional choice - to create a place where new SW memories could be made and it wouldn't be affected by any fan's perception of the movies. I imagine that part of the decision also had to do with the polarizing effect Ep 1-3 had over ep 4-6 fans, and vice versa how there are younger folks who have seen 1-3 and may not be as connected to 4-6. Creating a new land with elements from both sets of movies bridges that gap pretty well.
